I met Rick at the Music lab in Austin 2000ish...rehearsal place - I said, "dude! what are you doing here?" without a beat he said, "I'm putting in quote to paint the place." I saw CT three nights in a row that week at La Zona Rosa. My son was born on the second night...yes I went. Fuck yeah I went. Thank you for this! Shine on dude!

Loved that!!! I met Rick in a similar way he met Jeff Beck, minus me asking if he wanted to buy a guitar. I was at a Cheap Trick concert in our hometown on July 7th 1979 where AC/DC opened for them. One of my all-time favorites concerts. After the concert, my brother and I walked behind the arena to see if we could meet them, One of the doors were open so we walked in and I don't remember how it all happened but I got to meet Rick. SUPER nice guy. I was 15 at the time 16 on the 10th and I asked him, "what advice do you have for a 16 year old guitar player" he said and I quote "practice your ass off." So I did. He signed my sweaty soaking wet t-shirt a dollar bill and gave me a pick. Still have it! (The pick) T-shirt got lost over time, wish I still had it. Great memories, thanks Rick and thanks Joe! I've seen you Joe 2x now in our city.

Thank you for doing Nerdville for us Joe. I'm a 67 year old UK guy watching a self proclaimed alter ego guy be the most entertaining person and also the finest musician I will ever witness in the remainder of my lifetime. Although you give accolades to others, nobody will come close to creating your perfect sound. I've being watching an articulate approachable interviewer in a baseball cap knowing he will go into a phone box and come out in a suit and sun glasses and be the best guitarist in the world.... Doesn't get any more mint than that.

Cheap Trick was my first concert too. I saw them in Waterloo, Iowa when I was 16. When they opened, Tom Petersson was playing his bass laying on the floor and I thought “this is so rock n’ roll!”.

I love that both Rick and Joe tour with their vintage guitars. I grew up in Rockford watching CT play the Stardust/Phoenix, Waverly Beach, Sinnissippi and Page Parks for the Mothers Day concerts. He always had those used guitars plugged into a Sound City stack!

I think this is the best interview with Rick I've ever seen. Because it's done by another guitar player! Nobody asks this guy the questions they ought to, given his plethora of gear and taste for collecting. Joe has got to be the first guy to ask him about the Jeff Beck burst story in a interview I've ever seen.

Fiveneck guitar 🎸 with joe and Steve of Aerosmith covering Day Tripper at the Boston garden made me a live music fan for life. Got to hang out with and play with him in Philippines in '84 w USO band. Not the warmest fellow at the time...other musicians said he was quiet/shy. Saw a bunch of his guitars backstage including his "likeness" double-neck and checker Explorer. Got 3 signature pics.

First time I saw Cheap Trick was when they opened for the Doobie Brothers at the Oakland Coliseum Arena in 1978. Rick came out with several guitars around his neck and started playing one at a time then taking them off. He had a sweet Flying V and when he was done with it he launched it like an arrow to the side of the stage. I stopped breathing until I saw a pair of hands of a roadie reach up and catch it. It was a great show with great music. To this day Cheap Trick is the band I have seen the most live and they never disappoint. Rock on Rick and CT..

The tour that made me think to myself...No more KISS. Anyhoo. Rick is just as surprisingly short as Jimmy Connors. Lol .He was hamming it up for photos outside their trailer and I was a newbie on the Drake U. Major Attractions Committee. We didn't do this concert, we did do Alice Cooper with BeBop Deluxe though. Hi Joe
Thanks for the Rick Nielsen interview. As you can see with the recent loss of EVH these cats ain’t getting any younger ! I’m wondering if you might consider doing a interview with Ted Nugent ? He’s not politically correct but he’s a vintage collector and been around forever . Snubbed by the R&R hall of fame. The history of the Motown music scene and rock scene of the 60’s as he’s originally from Detroit. If Teds too much of a problem or to hot to handle .... maybe get his former vocalist / rhythm guitarist Derek St Holmes ... there’s some rumors and stories I’ve heard about the legendary rifts between him and Ted .... Derek is a incredible singer as well as great guitarist.. his vocal on all the better Ted stuff still stand up today .. his vocal on Just what the doctor ordered is as good as almost anyone else from that era and he pretty much can still nail it...he and Brad Whitford solo projects are worthy of discussion. I’m sure there’ll be all kinds of negativity in the comments about Yed , love him or hate him he’s always been a force to recon with.

What is disappointing is that Jeff Beck, Clapton and Pete Townshend all quit Les Pauls and SGs. They all flipped to Strats permanently. I loathe that. I loathe that. That 59 reissue with the Bigsby on Last Kiss @ R.A.H. is the most awesome sounding guitar I have ever heard.
