I've been to a lot of stage doors and by far the most organised was Hamilton at the Victoria Palace. We had to show our ticket to the security guards and we formed an orderly queue which was about 50-60 metres away from stage door so actors/crew/musicians who need to go straight home could. The guards who organised the queue knew exactly who was coming to meet the audience and therefore knew when we should leave once they had said hello. It was an absolutely lovely experience for all parties concerned. Well done, Hamilton team!

I imagine Hamilton made huge strides for stage door on Broadway because of the massive fame, and not to mention the #HamForHam! God I loved those videos, but the crowds were massive.

I went to stage door for the first time when Carrie was in Les Mis. It wasn't too bad, end of 2013. Since then I've gone to almost every stage door of the shows I've seen except Carrie's shows. I went at Chitty and I felt sick. I cried the whole way home because people were screaming and shouting at Carrie. She was physically shaking and when she got to us she said "sorry, I'm a bit overwhelmed" and said quietly to the people around "please stop shouting." It broke my heart that people were being so disgusting towards another human being and we didn't even ask for an autograph in the end because we were so in shock. I will never forget that experience. My mum came to see Addams and asked if I wanted to go to stage door, I told her to take one look and she did, we walked fast in the other direction. People can be so horrendous.

I remember Sam Tutty getting moaned at on social media because he promised to come out again but it was gala night and he was sidetracked by press. People need to realise stage door is an added bonus and not a right.

i totally understand you feeling uncomfortable with someone wanting you to sign bikini fotos. in my mind, i'd probably also feel uncomfortable because in the stage door situation you're fully clothed, and that person showing you these pictures is kind of a reminder that they've seen you with far less clothes, which might create like a weird power imbalance? like they might be sexualising you without your consent? because just because you post pictures of you, wearing whatever you want (or not wearing it) doesn't give anyone the right to sexualize you, just because you posed in a bikini. and them showing up with these pictures could be seen as proof that they do

I have to say I’ve never gone to the stage door a) out of fear from the crowd and b) because I feel bad inconveniencing the actors because I honestly would get so nervous I’d just end up tripping over my words 😂

What we also tend to forget is that stage door is an emergency exit, and often the only one from the stage and backstage areas, and thus needs to be kept clear at all times! Merch - well, just as long as the person having it signed isn't obviously doing so for commercial reasons!

I think the best advice is read the room and be respectful to everyone at stage door. If it's crowded make sure you're not taking up too much time with performers, let other people through once you've got a selfie/signiture and make sure there is space for cast and crew to escape 😂
Edit: And meeting cast at stage door is not a guarantee that comes with seeing the show so don't get angry if they dont come out!!!

I am so glad I am not the only one still crying at Les Mis stage door. When I went to Les Mis, I had been reading All That She Can See while waiting for the show to start. At stage door, I was in the same mindset as Oliver, so I didn't have Carrie sign my book because I wanted to honor the show I came to see. Silly me, but now I know. 🤦

Thank you for talking about this! The stage door in the UK definitely needs a better system. Saw someone get matt lucas signature but he hadn't seen the show. But seeing you carrie at stage door was a dream come true! I've got the system with my friend where she has my phone and she takes pictures while I talk to the actor. I get a more organic moment but then I have a really nice memento. Really interesting video today!

Honestly the best stage door experiences I've had have been when a big celebrity is off sick, people always walk out and the theatre is a lot less full (which angers me) but then stage door is awesome because they always want to stop and chat. It feels like you can have a more serious acting chat because you still care despite *insert name here* not being there

The best stage door experience I've had as an audience member was Heathers at the Other Palace where we were all lined up around the side of the theatre in a queue that the actors who had time to do stage door could walk along and see everybody. There was no pushing and shoving, I didn't feel like I was in the way and I actually got to speak to the majority of the cast which doesn't usually happen

From what I've seen of Broadway SD, I never like the look of them, I might have the wrong idea about it but to me it always looks like people are getting crushed and if you're not at the front you have no chance of meeting the actors. Idk, it looks really scary to me.
I loved stage dooring at waitress because it was always so well organised, we just stood in a line and the actors came out one at a time, and the men who worked there were really good at keeping it organised and making sure everyone was safe.

I’ve been to so many shows where stage door has been OUT OF CONTROL, one of them being Addams family in Birmingham when I was very fortunate to meet you both, and I remember after I’d met you guys, me, my friend and my fiancé all started to walk back to our car and we stopped for a second so my friend could tie their shoe and Carrie walked past us, and I remember saying to my friend that we need to hang back a little because I didn’t want Carrie to think we were following her, even though our car was in the exact same direction she was walking. I was so worried, because I know she’d recently had a bad experience and I didn’t want to make her feel uncomfortable by being so close behind.

I think the thing about people bringing those photos you mentioned Carrie might be that when you post or release those kind of bikini shots you're releasing them for a specific purpose: to share your holiday or to share your body confidence and inspire that confidence in other people, especially young girls. If a middle aged man came with a bikini photo, they're taking those photos out of their context and you don't know what they're going to do with them and it's quite creepy and even objectifying as they're taking it out of the context of being about body confidence and sharing happy memories and moments. That's how I think I would feel, and perhaps this is the reason it makes you uncomfortable?

I've been lucky to have really good stage door experiences. When I was 19 I met Carrie at Les Mis and it was so positive and really stuck with me. I like when there's barriers because it makes it easier to queue, it's also helpful when there's security that tell you who isn't coming out, just so you don't miss a train because you're expecting someone to come out! When I saw the Les Mis concert it was a matinee, and Carrie went to get coffee first then started from the end of the line which I thought was such a good idea! The older people around us were so impressed with how lovely Carrie was and how she stopped and did a photo with everyone who wanted one 😊

The first time I came to London in 2013 or 2014, I'm not quite sure, my partents in I went to se Les Mis. Carrie was absolutely incredible and this was actually the way I discovered her chanel. After the show we went to the nearby pub and didn't even think there was the way we could meet the actors. But walking back the the metro station we saw a big group of people gathering around a theatre and we of course asumed it was a Les Mis stage door. And amazingly Angela Lansbury comes from the stage door, because we were standing infront of the wrong stange door. Weirdly Murder she wrote was always played on slovenian national tv, so I kind of grew up with her. It was really an awesome day😄

I saw Betrayal on Broadway with Tom Hiddleston, Charlie Cox, and Zawe Ashton. There were gates at the stage door and gates on the sidewalk with security guards blocking people from just walking up to stage door. You also needed a ticket to stand in the area (it was so crowded). They never came out but I still had fun!!!

My first experience of stage door was at 9 to 5 the musical at the Savoy and it was so well done: they had barriers set up to allow the company to get out and they had a guard to prevent people from crowding (luckily it wasn't too busy so got more time with the actors!)

Stage door at Wicked twice was pretty quiet; When I saw Matt Willis as Fyiero (he was so good!) he was so lovely meeting me and my sisters. He did sign old Busted merch for us - felt a little weird asking but I think he got that it was because we'd loved busted so much!

My bestie and I went to see Adams Family in Salford and were so happy to meet you Ollie and Scott. It was my first theatre stage door and it's baffling to me how much its just a door with no organisation. I really appreciated the note on the door saying Carrie wasn't coming out and I think the barriers idea is necessary. I must say having done a few drunken stage doors for music acts that the theatre ones are a little more chill.

Two of the most organised stage doors I've been to were Andrew Scott in Hamlet and David Tennant in Don Juan in Soho. For Hamlet, we had to line up single file and Andrew was stood about 20 metres away from the main queue, and a security guard took us over one at a time for a signature/ picture.
For Don Juan in Soho, it was a barrier-style stage door, but there were security guards constantly reminding people that if there was pushing etc David would go straight back inside, and that seemed to make people behave.
Both shows also had signs up that said they wouldn't sign any Sherlock or Doctor Who etc merch, and anyone that tried to get it signed got turned away.

I met Carrie at stage door back in 2014 when I was 21 and it was a lovely experience. There were maybe 40 people in total and we all stayed pretty far back from the actual exit. Out of the 40-ish people there, probably 10 were just huge musical theater fans and wanted to tell everyone in the show how wonderful they did, 20 of us were there to meet Carrie specifically, and the other 10 were friends and family who got dragged over haha I got a nice selfie with Carrie and asked her to sign my program. The only part that wasn't lovely was after all the cast and everyone had been on their way and I was still standing near stage door texting my friend to meet up somewhere, a couple of younger girls rushed over towards those of us standing around and asked which way Carrie went because they wanted to follow her but they didn't know what time the show let out (they hadn't seen the show, clearly). We all just shrugged and said we didn't know and that they shouldn't try to find her because she was probably getting food (I saw a matinee). That was pretty creepy to me. Has anyone ever actually followed either of you after a show, Carrie or Oliver? Or your castmates? That just seems like a huge invasion.

That Ian McKellen story is exactly what happened when I saw David Tennant doing Hamlet at RSC years ago. I’ve done stage door a few times for broadway shows, I’ve never been given a ticket to queue up. Never heard of that, unless that’s a very very new thing. Just stood with everyone else. A few I hadn’t even gone to the show, was in NYC and just went over and waited to meet whoever was in it the show (James Franco and Zach Braff, same day). Would have loved to of had tickets to their shows, but they were ridiculously sold out, and I was only in town to go on a cruise. But other shows I’ve seen and went out after, still never heard of the ticket thing.

I work at a theatre, when James Arthur had a concert at our venue and stage door was so busy, me and the rest of the front of house team had to leave through a different door because the entire road was packed solid. I love stage door, but I always judge the situation and only go if there is a small amount of people there, and always respect the performers if they aren't in the mood to talk or sign anything.

I think the part about the bikini photos that feels weird to me is like... as an actor you have professional photos on the internet related to you as an actor and your acting career. So if someone came in with like... your headshot and asked you to sign it, I think that would feel less weird because you released those photos in relation to your acting career. But if someone comes up with a bikini photo of you that you posted on like Instagram, even though your Instagram is public and you DID post it, it's like they're commodifying you as a person instead of you as an actor. Idk if that makes sense or anyone had the same thoughts. Like if someone is a model or an actress that has had bikini photos released in like an ad or a magazine cover, I feel like it'd be less weird to ask them to sign that because they did that for work as part of the career. But a random personal picture, even if it was on public social media, isn't appropriate to ask someone to sign.

We don’t have huge crowds for stage door because our theatre largely hosts touring companies. However when we do have crowds at stage door, it’s a nightmare because they all stand in the staff car park and sometimes refuse to move.

In the past 3 years, my family and I have travelled to NYC 3 times and seen over 10 shows on Broadway. We have 2 kids (16 and 12 right now) and hung around stage door a few times and never needed to show a ticket (although the kids had their playbills to get signed). The BEST one was last summer when we saw the OBC of Hadestown on the day of the Pride Parade. The actors all came out along the barricade dressed in various rainbows and pride outfits and took the time to walk all the way down the line. My kids were nervous to meet the cast but the barricade made THEM feel more secure (if that makes any sense). They were THRILLED to get pictures with the cast and the colors made for fantastic photos. We saw Carrie in Les Mes in Feb this year the day she ran 8 miles...I couldn't find stage door (because I expected it to be more like NYC). My husband and son managed to locate it and my son got a very sweet picture with Carrie. You should see the smile on his face!

Often people I’m with don’t have the patience to come back with me. I saw you in les mis as Eponine but didn’t come to see you as the person I came to see it with didn’t want to. A,so my dad is always in a rush to get home 😂😂. I did get to go to Carrie’s book signing in London in summer of 2016 and then a few days after saw her in Chitty and we did come to stage door but it was the night the little boy was being over crowded and was so busy! I felt like both times I didn’t get to say what I really wanted to as I got too nervous. I love coming to see the shows as that’s the main thing and getting to see how talented you both are! I'm not sure that's what they mean, stage door is an added bonus rather than a right so those who get angry about people not being there arnt fully understanding it. If you are going to patiently wait in line and be polite to those around you and to the cast then go but if you will get fed up in line or shout at them then please don't go. They've had a long day especially if it is a 2 show day then they will be tired so if you're expecting to see a really energetic and excitable star then you might get let down. Just be polite and kind and there will be no problem x

when I was in line to see Newsies in LA I brought Andrew Keenan-Bolger’s book for him to sign , and I didn’t know if it was appropriate but he seemed really excited that someone actually brought his book and was going to see the show. that totally brightened up my life, and it’s one of my most favorite possessions! but also if I was just hanging around the theater waiting for the show to be over so I can meet actors at stage door, that’d seem kind of creepy and stalker-ish.

I used to have to get out of stage door to get the last bus home and it used to be a nightmare if it was busy so the barriers are great. We had people who came just for autographs to sign to sell and some who just come for certain actors and were rude to the other cast.
    Most people were amazing though.

About the older generation asking for photos at stage door, a little story that will make you smile, my grandma has just been to the matinee of the les mis concert and is a hugh John Owen Jones fan and I've never seen her so happy to ask him for a photo with him

I’ve always felt bad when i think about the first time I went to see Les Mis when Carrie was Eponine. We were waiting for not that long and Celinde came out and she walked straight past me and I didn’t say anything, I just kinda stared. I didn’t know anything about the show back then and didn’t immediately recognise her as Fantine, so even though I thought she was incredible (I’m pretty sure I cried at the death scene) I didn’t say well done or anything. I think Carrie was moving that day or something so she had already left by that point and even though I would’ve loved to meet her, I’ve always regretted more that I didn’t say anything, It was such an incredible show and was the start of my love of musicals. Anyway, Love these videos! 3 digit club ♥️♥️♥️

The Adelphi introduced barriers when Sara and Gavin joined the show and it was weird as I had been seeing the show for over 11 months without the barriers being there, however it meant stage door was a lot more organised and it was a lot easier for security to manage it. Some stage doors are so chaotic its awful and I hate how some people mob actors. My favourite stage doors have been from Sweet Charity, which was actually just the foyer, and The Boy in the Dress because other than closing, it was empty and I was able to just easily speak to the performers I knew. When you're someone who gets the frustration and are able to just speak to actors like normal, its so nice when stage doors are simple. My worst experience has definitely been Six or when Miranda Hart came out after Annie, it was crazy

I'm further into the video and I find it interesting the way you discuss about singing merch from other things, related to the performer. I always find it annoying in a way when an actor is associated with one specific show and people never exactly pay attention to anything they do beyond that. I know its happened with some of the Heathers girls and some of the Six girls and its almost disheartening because people work hard for these shows and it almost goes unrecognised by a lot of people? I dont know if thats something you'd agree with, but I think it somewhat relates to Oli's Ian McKellen point

I can’t believe people are so rude to another person. Stage door or otherwise! Don’t talk to people so disrespectfully!
I did stage door once at my local theatre. I’d seen legally blonde and a lovely lady called Helena was in it and I was an avid Follower of hers as she created a programme called skyp the gym and I’m a fitness instructor and had incorporated it into my classes and I wanted to thank her. She was great. Super lovely and gave me a lot of time but my shock came from the others at stage door waiting for Rita Simons (also met her, also lovely!) but as I was chatting to Helena, people are tutting and sighing, complaining I was in the way and why was I even getting my photo with her, she wasn’t well known! I was shocked. I’ve never done stage door again.
I now book a meet and great of it is offered for concerts and stuff. A lot more controlled

I’ve never actually been to stage door lmao I just think that was lovely and those people need to go home now as do i😂 nice to remember that like 95% of the audience don’t come to stage door and only the crazed ones do go so no wonder shit goes down if it’s all the crazy ones all together not diluted by the regular audience

I stage door when I've been to a show and if I'm lucky enough to meet the cast I ask them to sign my doodles of everyone in costume. I buy the programmes too but it's just more personal for me to have the doodles signed and don't feel like I can be cheeky enough to ask for people to sign both doodles and programmes.
I do like it how Broadway do it where they have to show the ticket to get to stage door, I've been to many shows and got talking to others at stage door "Oh I didn't see it, I'm not planning on seeing it," just there to see who they can meet.

I don't know if it's different for others, but here in Australia stage door really isn't a thing. I personally didn't really know it happened until I saw people's vlogs and pics from Broadway. Basically the only time I've 'stage-doored' is when we've got to meet one of our friends who performed in the show. I don't know if it's changed in the last few years, but yeah, doesn't really happen :)

I find it so incredible how the star culture is developed in theatre in the US and the UK. Here in Germany it’s not like that at all. Most theatre goers don’t know where stage door even is. And before COVID you could just have a drink the the canteen of the theatre and have a chat with the actors there. They would be super surprised when someone can up to them to sign something (like once a year) because it’s just weird here. It’s much more common to just have a chat. But then again theatre in Germany is much less popularised and commercialised. Love your stories, I just find it second degree uncomfortable, when people think that the actors owe them anything at stage door and they are just too nice to say no.

At the age of 18, I had my massive crush on the lead actor who played Buddy Holly in the musical on the UK Tour and my friend had a crush on the alternate actor, so we went to watch the show six times. Then I became friends with Gus, so I went to visit him, when he played the lead in the same show at the Strand, together with some other actors, still friends with them. Only for him to tell the entire cast, about me n my friend watching the show six times and coming to stage door. I also attended the 1000th performance of that show. That's the only show I've been visiting stage door.

I mean there was a controversy with Barrett Wilbert Weed when she was bombarded at the stage door and then broke down on her walk home. She posted on her Instagram account her report of the incident, and the main message was this: The actors have done an awful lot, they want dinner/to go home, and you technically don't owe them any of your time when they have worked their socks off for 3 hours. If they want to sign your things, they will.
Also, I still have the Addams Family programme that Oliver signed for me when the show was in Milton Keynes- thank you again!

I think the reason 'big' celebrities don't sign stuff from the 'big' (usually non-theatre) stuff they've been in is because I think a lot of the time the people wanting it signed are just going to sell it on for a profit. Like I went to stage door for Gypsy when Imelda Staunton was in it and she was LOVELY about signing my programme (she even had her own gold sharpie which showed up much better on the dark background of the programme), but then there was a dude there with a handful of glossy promo shots of her in her Umbridge costume from Harry Potter and she told him she wasn't going to sign them

I think Ian McKellen won't sign merch because people can buy something that is "Merch" and then they can take it and make money off of it.
If someone were to do this at a convention, they would have to pay A LOT of money for access to him, where as stage door sounds like it's just a walk up for free situation. Like someone trying to make money off of running into him on the street. a program is more of a keepsake and probably wouldn't have earned someone as much money if they decided to sell it. I've heard of a lot of people do this type of thing. Someone might also personalize something so that it's harder to resell.

  • @hatorigirl1202
    @hatorigirl1202 4 ปีที่แล้ว

In the Ian McKellen example, those fandom-y items are probably more likely to make some money being resold. So besides not being what he's there for, it's like people are using him to make money. And that's not cool.
