Glad Trin is doing well. Since she had an ovary infection she likely couldn't breed and was left, so sadly she was likely tossed out, so glad she met you guys. I grew up with dogs, had a dog my entire life until recently, I always think it is so cute to see people with their first dog it is like the first child and you guys are adorable with her. Our 16 year old passed in November and 19 year old passed in January. But our neighbors dog is always over here and is so sweet, it has been OK. Glad you are checking what you can take to Alaska with you, I would have tossed a couple bags of dog food in and not even thought about it, they never worried about that before. The love you have for Trinity and Cody is so heartwarming ❤. Our pets are truly family. Thank you for sharing your beautiful hike ! I really enjoy watching your adventures each week. Can't wait till next week!
The first video of yours that I watched was the day you met Trinity and ended up keeping her, for that reason I subscribed to your channel I'm so glad you got her taken care of and she's doing very well.
Vet care on the road is always concerning. Glad you got Trinity back safe and sound. Camper looks great and ready for your Alaska adventure. Safe travels.
It really is. We have a lot of concerns with Cody's health for this trip so that will always be on our mind as we travel because it's so much harder to find vets that work with exotic animals. -J
Trinity will need a few days to recover. Make sure she has a cone of shame on usually sutures come out in 7-10 days reduce activity 2-3 days after surgery and no bathes until sutures come out. Hope all goes well
Poor Trinity. That undiagnosed uterine infection was probably the reason she was dumped because it would have made her an unsuccessful breeder. Pyometra in dogs can be a death sentence. My cat had pyometra. Even if they appear healthy it can long term affect the kidneys. My sweetheart lived to eighteen, however. Anyway, be sure to keep an eye on her kidney function. You maybe should ask a vet about putting her on a special kidney diet food rather than regular, or how to adjust her diet to help maintain her kidneys. You are all so lucky to have each other.
Trinity and Cody are your babies! So sweet! I’m happy Trinity is doing well post spay. I can’t imagine our life without our furbabies (2 kitties and 2 Frenchies). They make life complete! 😊🐾❤️
How wonderful that Trinity is now okay and all things have been done. She will recover quickly. I was a cat lady for 40 years. Married my husband ten years ago and I had three cats. He’s allergic. So he put up with them until they all cross the rainbow bridge. Then we decided to get a dog for him. I never was a dog lover and my husband was concerned. Well I’m an animal lover and Smokey has made me a dog lady! She adores me so much. You guys are the same way I was. Love it so much.
It's so good to hear that story. I kinda thought I was on an island of "not being a dog person until...." Trinity has turned that around, although I'm still not 100% convinced that I'm a dog person as opposed to a "trinity person." 🤔 -J
@@OpenRoading well we have had Smokey for almost three years and yes, I have become a dog person. Still love cats but dogs are just so loving. Loved bunnies as a child, we raised rabbits and it was so much fun playing with them. Suffice it to say I love animals. If only I could have a farm and turn it into a sanctuary for animals with no home. There are so many. Shelters are full everywhere.
It's not unusual for a dog to be in a little bit of shock after surgery and an overnight at the vet! We know she was absolutely thrilled to be back with you guys! 😀 🐕
I have often said that sometimes, propane is a PAIN to get filled, especially in some states. I’ve often had to drive over 90 minutes just to find a fill station. This is why I didn’t get a propane generator in my most recent RV. Good episode! Thanks for taking us along!
There's part of me that wishes instead of 2 larger containers that I had 3 of the smaller ones so I could use the exchanges....BUT.... I'm not sure how I feel about having different tanks that I'm not used to hooked up each week. I might be concerned about safety issues. -J
one nice thing about the Catahoula Leopard bread is they are very protective of the owners. my sister had a Catahoula Leopard for most of the life of the dog and the bread is very smart and very affection to the owners.
She does seem to have a very strong protective streak. We're still trying to figure out how to work with her outside because once she's out there she is sooooooo easily distracted. Walking with her in new areas is still quite difficult. Once she's familiar with it she is much calmer. -J
Great job editing this one. I laughed out loud when I saw the quick transition between Joe dumping tanks (no gloves/your recent survey) and eating his sandwich in the truck 😂 Well done.

Glad Trinity's spay day went well! Our Rusty goes for grooming every 6 weeks. I drop him off early in the morning then go home to clean, I'm usually done in 3 hours and then I'm ready for him to come home. My husband has retired so the cleaning now takes less time, so we're both ready to get him home in two hours now! It's crazy just how quiet it is without them! These pups work their way into our hearts and become such comfort to us. Also, had not heard about the pet food limit.
I used to cry when I had to leave my cat for dental, cuz they have to give them anesthesia and I'm a worry wart. One of the first videos we watched of y'all was when you found Trinity. Best find ever. She's a lucky pup. ❤
Awe so glad Trinity is feeling ok after her spay.. 🐾🤗 great idea Joseph to put the coating on the trailer so the new decals won’t fade. It looks awesome!❤
You can tell how much you love Trinity! ❤ I’m also surprised they needed to keep her overnight for just a routine spay. I’m guessing it varies per clinic, but I’ve never heard of anyone having to do that before.
You are the best pup parents! My heart skipped a beat when I heard pyrometria. The infection of the uterus can happen at any time and is life threatening. I lost my precious Sky to it because I was hospitalized and those taking care of her thought her sad behavior was just missing me.
Need to visit Idaho... I just started watching your channel this last month and went back on some of your older videos. You guys do a awesome job. One of my favorites... be safe.
The vet's office in my area no longer keeps pup overnight after spays or neuters. Because most can't get staffing overnight. Plus, like you mentioned, they are more comfortable at home. But it makes for a sleepless night, at least for me. I'm so glad she is doing well. I also love watching how you have all bonded!
Yeah - if she had been home I would have been up watching. My concern with this vet clinic is I literally didn't know if anyone was there watching overnight. I kid you not....we never spoke to the vet...at all...the entire time. If this wasn't a routine procedure I never would take an animal there again simply because the communication was so bad. They could be the best vet in the world but I have no way to judge that before or after because we never got to speak to them. 👀 We toned down our comments for the video because we like to keep things pretty positive but I had to hold back a bit. -J
You are definitely my kind of people. Anyone that feels like you did dropping Trinity off shows how wonderfully awesome you both are. And you put out good videos too 😁👍... ❤ for Trinity and ❤ Cody
Glad you stayed a safe distance from the arch! 😆 You are great at nonchalantly dropping a "hidden" joke or reference in many vids. Not sure if it's still a thing, when I went to Canada several years ago, pet food had to be in its original packaging (i.e. DON'T dump it into a bulk airtight container and throw away the bag). I quickly found out the price of Canadian dog food!!! Thanks guys for bringing us on your journey. Hugs and kisses to Trin for a speedy recovery

I just found your channel today and have been bing watching. Trinity is such a sweetheart and I love the story of how you found each other. So glad she had a successful surgery and is back home. 🥰
You are the best fur baby parents. I always say we don't pick them but they pick us. Like my hubby liked this little Chihuahua at the humane society. He was holding her and then I took her, but she wanted nothing to do with me and jumped back into my hubby's arms! At first I felt so bad but we ended up adopting her and it's now 13 months later and she fits in so well. She is the smartest little dog and she came already potty trained to use a doggie pee pad by our back door if were not up early. Which I found amazing since our last 3 boys (Bichon Frise's) trashed our last house and we had to completely put in new flooring. As much as I loved my 3 Bichon's I will never have another male dog ever. Hannah also recalls instantly as I trained her to come lickity split when I blow this particular whistle (It sounds like a British police whistle).
That was a sweet video! There is a completeness a dog gives a home and when they’re not there is when it’s definitely felt. I feel like I always say this but I just want to thank you again for giving Trinity such a great home with two actively involved special humans who take such sweet care of her. My little Maltese was bit by a dog who jumped the fence and he became reactive to other dogs. With work, it has greatly improved. I don’t condone using shock collars ever. But there is a little handheld unit I got off Amazon that emits either a beep or a sound wave only dogs hear that made a huge difference for us. I actually ordered it to use if the attack dog ever did that again but started using the beep sound to train with and I can’t give any greater praise. I’ve actually never used the high pitch sound wave option. If he’s starting to bark at other dogs thru the front door all it takes is showing him or saying we’re getting what we call “the beeper.” Cost around $35. I take it on every walk and everywhere we go. Just a thought. Good luck on your journey to Alaska. If it’s anything like Hawaii , it’s a little complicated but once you’ve done it, you’ll be pros. Safe travels!
Awww, I know exactly how y’all feel. And likely she was still groggy from the anesthesia, not that she wasn’t excited to see you. We had one that had a bad reaction to the anesthesia and had to go back for observation. So glad Trin was doing so good and the infection was caught early! ❤️
We had no idea she had an infection when we took her in! So glad they got it taken care of. I think we both were expecting the reaction of those dogs who have been reunited with their owners after being separated for years.... 😂 I think we were overly optimistic. LOL -J
The microchip was a must for us! To us the most basic way to show love to an animal is making sure people can help return them home should the ever get lost. -J
Happy to hear everything went well with Trinity. It's amazing how animals especially dogs can just wiggle their way into your heart . Also just so you know my husband ate peanut butter and jelly all through school and work everyday and he still does. He's retired now but still loves pbj sandwhiches.
That trail looked fun with the ladders and chains, different than usual hiking trails. Every dog I have ever had has always acted like they were a little perturbed with me after any vet procedure or grooming appointment... LOL. They come around in a few hours. So glad you were able to get your paperwork needed for the border crossing. I am assuming you need one for Cody too?

@@OpenRoadingwe’re in BC. Going into Washington we are frequently asked about food for our dog. It has to be in the original unopened bag. We have been allowed to take 1 meal in in a ziploc, but reluctantly. And you are required to have proof of rabies and health certificate, though we’ve never been asked for it. But never been asked coming back to Canada.
I appreciate your hard work! Nice paint job in the desert lol. You might have found your next side hustle...mobile RV painting. You guys do a great job sharing your adventures and makes us viewers want to be on the road with you.
Most dog foods available in the US are available in Canada. Don't forget Canadian prices are in Canadian dollars and the the exchange rate is about $1.35.
haha! Yes, we are aware. 😁 There are two reasons we are stocking up: 1 - Specific brands. There are certain things we don't want to switch brands for. Unfortunately pet food is one of them so we'll just have to hope that what's up there is the same. Something we are aware of is in different countries sometimes teriffs and laws mean a brand product that looks the same isn't actually the same (chocolate for instance - A reese in Canada isn't the same as a reese's in the states because Canada has specific chocolate import laws that the US does not.) 2 - Cost. I understand we have to calculate for the exchange rate - but as we travel we will be spending most of our time in rural areas...rural almost always means more expensive. We run a pretty tight budget so we try to save where we can. 🙂 -J
Another great video. I like watching these videos while I am doing my medical charting. I would be interested if food prices are really that big of a difference in Alaska as least in the major cites (Anchorage, Fairbanks). I guess we have been here so long that it at doesn't appear to be expensive. Another indication that I have been here too long it that the my wife and I don't even use window shades when we sleep. So using eye shades to sleep is very tourist
We'll be sure to let you know! 😁 I was talking to a friend and they said at the big stores in Anchorage the prices are similar to the lower 48. We just did a "stock up" run and we're making a spreadsheet so we can truly compare apples to apples. Thanks again for your awesome support of the channel. It's incredible to me that you put that value on our content every week. 🤗 -J
@@OpenRoading Ah! Did not know that she was in heat. I am so glad you adopted her. She is a gorgeous dog. I have bred and shown dogs for over 35 years. Trinity is just gorgeous. She has beautiful neck into shoulder, good strong rear and she is so totally well balanced. What does all that mean. That means that she is build correctly so you will not get hip and joint issues and early onset of arthritis. Bottom line, you hit the jackpot when she decided she belonged to you. Also, having a big dog on the road is a huge safety factor. As a senior woman who is a Roadtripper no one messes with an older woman with a big dog! CONGRATULATIONS! To you and Trinity, she is one lucky girl.😎
Some CVI are only good for 2 weeks prior to entering that state. I used to work at a vet clinic and some owners wanted to be proactive and do it months ahead of travel time but the certificate would expire and they would have to do another one closer to travel day. The longest paperwork is to Hawaii, definitely start months in advance for that one.
So I'm curious - Since we are in state for more than 30 days how would that work? We've spoken with someone else up there who said while technically they are only good for 30 days it's treated as more of a guideline and they've never seen someone have a problem with it being up to 90 days old. -J
The main reason for the certificate is to certify that your pet is free of any diseases or parasites. So that is why a certificate that is older than 2 weeks prior to entering the state is not accepted. Once in the state you should be fine to stay as long as you want but when coming back to the lower 48 you will most likely need a new certificate. Check the state's USDA guidelines some are easy and explain everything others you need to call them to get the information.
Thanks for the journey! I look forward to y'alls vids every Friday. Oh, I hate when my pets have to stay over night. I'm always a nervous wreck! Lol...

Appreciate the offer. At the moment we're very much wrapped up in keeping our heads above water that we're just working on some of the basics with her. Any advice on getting her to come every time when called would be great. We currently use boiled chicken (her kryptonite) outside and it works until she gets distracted...and then there is no getting her back on track generally. -J
@@OpenRoading Hi! I know exactly what you mean dog training can be very demanding especially when you are so busy. So to start out with just come up with an easy mark and reward system for her to make communication with her easier. For instance, you want her to sit: what you would do is give the command and as soon as she completes the command say “yes”, so she knows she did the command correctly then reward her with her favorite snack. Make it a party for her and she will learn if I listen, I get rewarded. Over time you can phase out the rewards if you want but it is up to you. This principle you can use with any command. An important thing is do frequent short training sessions to start maybe 15 minutes at a time. You want them to stay engaged with you the whole time so if you make your sessions too long she will lose interest. With that, try to make yourself more valuable to her than the environment. You want to be the most valuable thing to her and in return she will learn all the good things come from you. It would be a good idea to teach her a “place” command especially since you are on the road. For this you can use a bed, blanket, mat or whatever you have. You can teach her to stay in her “place” until released. This is really helpful for when you are setting up or you just need her to stay in one place where you know she is at. Start by showing her the place, walk her over to it and when she gets on the bed and sits or lays down mark it by saying yes and reward her. Always reward in the position she is supposed to be in. When she tries to get off the bed just tell her no, walk her back to the bed, and tell her place again. It is just a lot of reputations and practice. For her recall: Get a long lead, to practice with. This does take time but she will get there. It is literally just letting her get a little bit away from you then tell her come and give the leash a little pop if she doesn’t come, not to hurt her but it is too break up their fixation and bring there focus back to you. When she comes back again, make it a big party for her with lots of rewards. Each day you can go a little further and further. I personally always have her favorite treats with me. Once she gets better at it you can take her to places with more distractions and train around distractions too. Try to start this command with as little distractions as possible then build it up to more distractions that to solidify her come. I don’t know if you know this but Lowe’s and Home Depot allow you to bring your dogs into the store as long as they are behaved so when Xena was younger we used to train in there as well. I also use good so she knows she is on the right track and no when she is just totally lost. Kind of like hot cold I guess….lol. I have so much more I could tell you but I will write a book….lol. I hope that helps a little but if you need anything I will leave you my e-mail and then we can talk a little bit more. I am afraid to leave my phone number on here for the public but I would give it to you to stay in touch if you want!
@@kristenpoe4967 Thanks so much for this. We are doing most of this but I think our biggest fault is we aren't doing consistent training sessions every day. She does really well with "sit," "boop" (having her boop our hand) "shake" But "come" is impossible once she is remotely distracted. It's like she will behave once she wants to behave outside. We should probably be doing a lot more with her inside. -J

If we don't meet up in Alaska we will meet up in Florida next winter! That's a promise. Be sure to let Kalyn know what dates you'll be on land, she's the one who knows where we'll be when (although it's still in development) I just drive us. 🙂 -J

She was protecting us from that nefarious sticker. Good thing we won't see a lot of cruise america RVs in our travels.....wait.....oh boy. -J
The first video of yours that I watched was the day you met Trinity and ended up keeping her, for that reason I subscribed to your channel I'm so glad you got her taken care of and she's doing very well.
Trinity is the star of the channel! -J
Hope all goes well
@@HYHfarm She never needed the cone. We went 2 weeks without running. 🙂 -J
Thanks for the information. I'm certainly going to do some more research on the topic! -J
Thank goodness she was in for a spay. Pyo is nothing to mess with.

We were expecting the viral "Dog who hasn't seen it's owner in 5 years and goes nuts" treatment.....after just 24 hours. 😂 -J

I can vouch for that. I had 3 and felt very safe and loved by them. Very loyal, and good cattle dogs.

It's amazing how fast they steal your heart! -J
I used to cry when I had to leave my cat for dental, cuz they have to give them anesthesia and I'm a worry wart.
One of the first videos we watched of y'all was when you found Trinity. Best find ever. She's a lucky pup. ❤
Leaving your pet overnight somewhere, especially when you don't know the people they are being left with, is so tough. -J

Awe so glad Trinity is feeling ok after her spay.. 🐾🤗 great idea Joseph to put the coating on the trailer so the new decals won’t fade. It looks awesome!❤
Can't take credit for that one! Kalyn did all the research. I just did the grunt work. 😁 -J
You can tell how much you love Trinity! ❤ I’m also surprised they needed to keep her overnight for just a routine spay. I’m guessing it varies per clinic, but I’ve never heard of anyone having to do that before.
Yeah. I'm sure it's for observation but we really would have been more comfortable having her home. -J
You are the best pup parents! My heart skipped a beat when I heard pyrometria. The infection of the uterus can happen at any time and is life threatening. I lost my precious Sky to it because I was hospitalized and those taking care of her thought her sad behavior was just missing me.
I'm so sorry for your loss. That had to be devastating especially surrounding a time when you were going through your own troubles. 😢 -J
Need to visit Idaho... I just started watching your channel this last month and went back on some of your older videos. You guys do a awesome job. One of my favorites... be safe.
Thanks so much! -J

Thanks for the heads up! We had seen something about that whole packaging thing! Here's hoping we only have to buy 1 bag in Canada. -J

I just found your channel today and have been bing watching. Trinity is such a sweetheart and I love the story of how you found each other. So glad she had a successful surgery and is back home. 🥰
You are the best fur baby parents. I always say we don't pick them but
they pick us. Like my hubby liked this little Chihuahua at the humane society.
He was holding her and then I took her, but she wanted nothing to do with me
and jumped back into my hubby's arms! At first I felt so bad but we ended up
adopting her and it's now 13 months later and she fits in so well. She is the
smartest little dog and she came already potty trained to use a doggie
pee pad by our back door if were not up early. Which I found amazing since
our last 3 boys (Bichon Frise's) trashed our last house and we had to
completely put in new flooring. As much as I loved my 3 Bichon's I will never
have another male dog ever. Hannah also recalls instantly as I trained her to
come lickity split when I blow this particular whistle (It sounds like a British
police whistle).
The older I get the more I believe that sometimes the best pairings are when the animal chooses you. 🤗 -J
Thanks for the tip! -J
So glad Trinity is doing good! ❤❤❤
She's almost all healed up now! -J
LOL -J
Great video. It's so good that Trinity got spayed and microchipped and is all ready for the big trip up north. I loved the hike too. Blessings!

She was very annoyed 😂.
Yeah, we needed to get a CVI for Cody too - but for Alaska. Canada doesn't care interestingly enough. -J
I love your channel. You're sweet people with animals living the dream. Sometimes the dream is a nightmare, but that's life. Don't ever change.
"Sometimes the dream is a nightmare" I can't tell you how much I appreciated you putting that in there. Living the dream sometimes oversimplifies things and makes you think people don't think you have hard days/weeks/months.
Thankfully though, we haven't had a true nightmare in a while so yes...I would say at the moment we are living the dream. 🙂 -J
It is a great hike. Did that one 3 years ago.

Most dog foods available in the US are available in Canada. Don't forget Canadian prices are in Canadian dollars and the the exchange rate is about $1.35.
Yep! Got our currency conversions at the ready! -J
We have grocery stores and pet stores up here in Canada.
haha! Yes, we are aware. 😁 There are two reasons we are stocking up:
1 - Specific brands. There are certain things we don't want to switch brands for. Unfortunately pet food is one of them so we'll just have to hope that what's up there is the same. Something we are aware of is in different countries sometimes teriffs and laws mean a brand product that looks the same isn't actually the same (chocolate for instance - A reese in Canada isn't the same as a reese's in the states because Canada has specific chocolate import laws that the US does not.)
2 - Cost. I understand we have to calculate for the exchange rate - but as we travel we will be spending most of our time in rural areas...rural almost always means more expensive. We run a pretty tight budget so we try to save where we can. 🙂 -J
We did Dead Horse Point when we were in Moab last year. It was amazing. I really felt like it was almost equal to the Grand Canyon.
We went there in 2020 and as I was editing this I was like "Ohhhh shoot. Never once did we mention dead horse. 👀 Your description is dead on! -J
That 303 is good stuff. Just remember it is a sacrificial protectant, so you need to re-apply once a year or so.
OK! It says on the can once a MONTH! So you're telling me......I can stretch that out a bit? -J

It was! I honestly think it lives up to "one of the best hikes in the area!" -J
@@monicacastillo801 we'll be sure to check! -J

It is amazing what you did for Trinity. It touched my heart so much I wanted to reach out and if you are interested, I would gladly love to help if you guys need some help with dog training! I am not a certified trainer but I do have a Service Dog and we went through 2 years of training so I think I learned a lot…..lol. 🐾❤️
For her recall:
Get a long lead, to practice with.
She does really well with
"sit,"
"boop" (having her boop our hand)
"shake"
But "come" is impossible once she is remotely distracted. It's like she will behave once she wants to behave outside. We should probably be doing a lot more with her inside. -J
Great video... well done
Thanks so much! 🤗 -J
