    I think for me the most difficult part when I was learning R myself was to understand how all the formulas work exactly.

    • @RforEcology
      @RforEcology  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the feedback. Do you mean how formulas are written inside modeling functions such as lm()?

    • @varvaravladimirova9277
      @varvaravladimirova9277 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@RforEcology Most tutorials just explain how to write the formulas, but not what each part of the formula means. I mean actual the details in the formula, for example when writing a whole line of formula I would get confused what exactly the input meant. Hope that makes sense

    Thank you so much for doing this!
    When you cover different topics, especially in the first few videos, could you please introduce the terminology used to describe various parts of R and its structure? One of the biggest things I struggled with initially was not knowing what to google because I didn't know the correct term for something.

    Hi Luka, great idea! I like the "Essentials skills of R for ecologists". Maybe one of the things that is a pretty basic thing and some students have some trouble is to build a matrix in Excel previous to the use of R. How to build a matrix in Excel if you are going to work those data in R? Also the transformation to *.csv and the relevance of the working directory and what happens if you move or change your files.

      Great feedback, Jorge! I completely agree. Those "little" things that can get overlooked in typical courses can make all the difference. I will be sure to include this!

    Hi Luka ! Maybe a short intro to Github? I think basic use of Github could be useful, especially as a lot of grad students will be working remotely and will have to share with collaborators in the next few months.

      Hi Emilie, that is a great idea. I have been on the fence about it just so that the course is not too overwhelming for new students, but someone else has also suggested this. I may end up putting it in as a supplemental component if students are interested. Thanks!

    Hey Luka! I think you have covered the main aspects in the content. Not sure how deep you want to go, but it would be helpful (& appreciated!) if you can cover the output of general & generalized mixed models. Great work!

      Thanks for the feedback, Catalina! The focus of the course won't be on statistics per se (the student should have some background in stats already), but I know that even with that understanding the output of these models can be really tricky to understand sometimes. Thanks for the feedback! I'll make sure to cover that.

    Some GIS would be useful as R is a great GIS tool and GIS is so important in ecology. I would make sure to cover tibbles when talking about data frames, and when dealing with dates, includes times as well. I don't really see the importance of hypothesis testing with R when you've already covered all those models and analysis types.

    once you have this qualification/course you will be able to apply for high functioning/paying posts?. Many years ago i was a member of one of the uks oldest and most respected research organizations - every year there was a lecture (followed by a very nice dinner) before which the 2 sides of the organization made presentations - one amateur and the other prof - the amateur side did things like fish counting while the prof did things like the differential in the tracheal system of culcine mosquito larvae in relationship to salinity - concluding after some 2 hours that there was none - the fish counting produced clear evidence that pike perform a very useful function in fish cultures in terms of health and size - it seems the course is dependant on information that could easily be incorrect - but the idea being essential for proving ?
    We rely far too much on hi faluting science and not enough on basic well established facts we produce endless scientists who cannot find work and when they do it is from large business interests for whom the truth is not necessarily part of their daily work (apolagies not helpful but i feel so much better)

      Thanks for your comment. Indeed that is an entire topic worthy of discussion and resolution (don't know the answer though...). My goal for now is not to imply that this course will get you X paying job--it is simply an intro to an essential tool (R) that I think can improve science literacy and the ability to do good ecology no matter what the student's intention is. :)
