Tama starclassic is my favorite,i love how nick is soooo unbiased about the drums.dosent matter the brand or material, the way he describes the drums aleays make them seem perfect to me
When it comes to shells, I don't feel biased towards any particular company because I believe all of the companies are making amazing products and I own drums from several of the major brands, but I genuinely believe that the Tama STAR drums are the best shells on the market. I played a few of them at the PASIC shows over the years and they just sing. If I were a pro level drummer actively recording and touring, these drums would likely be my choice, particularly the STAR Maple drums.
@@Cleverogue The detail Tama put on every drum like suspension system, floor tom legs, bass drum spurs, and other features....I don't feel DW it's on the same league. Just the DW shells are cool, no more....
My friend just bought a Tama star maple kit and it's amazing. The attention to every little detail and being handmade to perfection is insaneeeee. Super warm but a little tooo warm for me. Great for jazz and other styles but for metal and rock, I have a 6 piece starclassic bubinga kit and a new 5 piece 2016 Starclassic hyperdrive BB kit in molten brown burst with the upgraded hardware brought down from the star series. Love how Tama upgraded starclassics with these great new updated star features, but dead honestly I prefer my 5 piece 2016 starclassic hyperdrive BB kit over star drum sounds. Never played star bubingas or walnut but I'm sure I'd love them over these star maples. Money isn't everything when grading drums, especially a company like Tama who have quality drums top to bottom. Starclassic bb's are the cheapest of the starclassic line and I love them the most, got it for 1969.00 total. My friend even said my BB kit has way more punch and attack to them compared to his star maple drums
Tama is one of the top drum companies for shure they are like the Toyota of drums you get a lot for your money but after the Fukushima meltdown I'm a little sketchy about buying Japanese products
Honestly the walnut sound a little better than the maple.. when I received my Walnut Japanese indigo sen burst (kit on their 2018 catalog) I rubbed one out on them, so sexy.. also the blue Viking is the sexiest kit ever created.. I’m so blessed to be able to of acquired a TAMA Star walnut for my first kit and I play the sheeyet out of them.. day 6 I was playing songs by ear 6 hours into drumming all because the TAMA Star line is that awe inspiring.
Best kits. The Bubinga sound like gold. Tama is pure quality and art. I wouldn't get endorsed by any other company. Even if I had to pay for my own Tama kits lol
Sweet water really needs to review some sort of Tama bubinga kit. Either a starclassic bubinga or Star bubinga but preferably the starclassic bubinga maybe an exotic kit since those look so damn stunning. They have never reviewed a Tama bubinga which is the signature sound and backbone of Tama for a long time now. They have reviewed starclassic maple, bb, silverstars, superstar classic, superstar hyperdrive, imperialstar, now star maple. Only thing missing is the bubinga.
officialMainspring it's a jazz or classic tone if you listen to recordings ots a verry desirable tone and sound to have. most of what you're hearing is the coated ambassadors too. these drums resonate warmth and blend rather than cut especially in person.
To me its unfortunately the problem with Tama... I dont like the sound, due to this strange tom sounds. Not my thing... ...that's why I went from Tama Starclassic Maple to Pearl.
I trust Nick, he knows what is he talking about. Nick, please for the next review can you do "Everybody w. to. r. the. W." I hope that Roland and Kurt won't hire lawyers,,,,
Just watched the one Nick did with the Recording Custom, by no means a cheap set, but maybe $2k less? Not comparing the beautifulness of this kit, stunning.. But I have to say, being neutral, the RC's sound better.. Seem to pop more, and cut more with great bottom end and perfect sustain.. BTW, the Tama Star hardware is second to none!
+Bounce_hit I saw Nick with SB play at the Astoria in London about 10 years ago. Amazing stuff. Last saw SB at the High Voltage festival a few years back, in London, but after Nick had moved on, still good, but not the same. :) I shook Ryo's hand and sort of regretted it after, he has a very strong grip! haha.
Michael Calimag my father said this “Japanese things don’t really look cool. But their stuff are the best even though they look normal, it’s the same case with Tama, you want to go with sound? Buy a Tama. If you’re going for looks, buy a DW.”
Nothing they both sound the same . But these cost way more but if you get the superstar classics your getting great sound but way less money . I hope I helped to explain .
These sound great and all but I honestly think one could build their own kit with Keller shells and get something very similar. I think the wacky ply configuration is just a gimmick like dw uses.
Actually John, what you are seeing in most of the higher end kits such as this, the Yamaha Absolute Hybrid Maple and so on is a work around. Older kits from about the early 80's and older were often using old growth wood which was very dense and heavy. Most modern drums use very young wood. The center ply allows for a more dense core adding rigidity, tone and possible lower frequencies. It will bring the fundamental pitch of the drum down allowing for a richer overall sound. You'll notice that Hybrid drum kits like the Yamaha, Mapex, other Tama kits like the B/B kits augment with a heavy dense wood like bubinga. Oh and yes, Nick is a bad ass!!!
Bearing edges bearing edges bearing edges....These have the right edges with shell thickness...This line and the Mapex Blaster, Black Widow, white widow lines all incorporated the same concept... Recording dream come true

Tama drums will forever be the best in my eyes. Their versatility, durability and quality are unmatched.
Agreed! I have tried others, but always end up back on a Tama lol
I agree
True that! They always sound soooo good
I'm a hard-core Sonor guy, but these are some of the few drum lines I'd put side by side with them.

He is not unbiased. He has to sell the drums to you! You won't hear bad things about any drums from him ever (publicly), it's his job to sell them.
So cool! Love the way they Nick explains things and there isn't a bunch of "uhs" and "ums" in any of his videos! Great work, sir!
He is a perfect drum-reviewer. He knows what he's talking about, and he sure knows how to play the drums he reviews
Best review I have ever seen, and Nick goes nuts in that last outro song. He should review and play everything.

Love the new approach to the videos, the tracking, complimentary cymbals, drums alone, you've hit the nail on the head!
He forgot to note that the re-rings can have inlays just like the shell exterior. A classy option!
That last song was absolutely fantastic. You just totally went for it :D Love it.
I can't stop listening to the fade out song on this review!!
Brother Nick, you always SLAY IT!!! Thank you ❤
Yes quality drums and stunning playing. That's how to review gear online folks!!!
TAMA star are the best drums neck and neck with SONOR..
For me, Tama edges out Sonor because of Sonor’s mounting hardware
Definitely
second (Sonor)
and third (Tama)
with Premier and Ludwig getting honourable mentions
But come on...

Good drumming too.
You forgot to tell everyone about the amazing one knob adjustment on TAMA star hardware.. no need for 2 or 3 adjustment knobs like all other stands
Less nobs,,,good.
maybe it's the tunning but the toms sound dead to me... where's the tone? great looking drums though... and excellent playing by the reviewer.
Exactly my thoughts.
Yeah it's too muffled for my taste too . It is indeed because of the tuning and the heads .

Nick is duing great job at Sweetwater ! only point of criticizam , why are drums ( toms ) allways tuned high ?
They aren't, its standard. They are also smaller shell sizes. If the toms were individually miced you would hear more bottom end.
Tama is The Best drum made

Plain finish for such an expensive kit. I want an exotic fade finish for that price.
Larry Tate its about the sound, the finish only contributes a little bit to the price

Save your money and get a Starclassic. Also the 8x10 tom is tuned too high.
Tyler Felland I totally agree
Some of the best drums ever made. Attention to detail is superb.
However for my tastes sound is lacking. And the sound is not equal to quality.
Whats the difference between this set and the Superstar Classic in regards to sound?
Nothing they both sound the same . But these cost way more but if you get the superstar classics your getting great sound but way less money . I hope I helped to explain .
For such a high-end and expensive kit, why only have ambient room mics? The drums don't sound as good as the price tag would suggest.

What’s the sizing of the snare drum?
Probably just the standard 14×5, but I'm probably wrong.
This would be like owning a Ferrari that you can actually drive fast without getting arrested
What heads?
Is it just me or do the starclassic maple sound better to my ears? Not huge on the tone of these. Maybe with some clear emperors they would better..
I think these are tuned quite a bit higher. I don't know why but they are quite inconsistent with the tuning.
Please pick me to win these TAMA drums.
Superstar Classic - all maple shell - $900. Star - maple shell - $7000. Ah, no way!

Great drums, but I think the Tama SLP snares sound better than this...to me , anyway.
The more i listen to rounded bearing edges, the more i find that they're not for me.
In my opinion, rounded bearing edges are good only for big toms, but for 10" and 12" not.
Again the 10” tom tuned like a timbal
The 10 is supposed to sound like that .
Alot of extra expenses that aren’t necessary
