As someone with social anxiety, can confirm going in costume helps me. I went to Comic Con alone once, and the days I went in my cosplay were much less stressful than the day I went in my street clothes, despite the fact that people kept stopping me to ask for a picture :)

This absolutely fascinates me. I've never had a real creative drive toward costumes, it's just not my thing really (though I love to see other people be creative and enjoy things, which I suppose is obvious since I'm here lol), so I've often wondered what people get out of it apart from just creative play, since there are many ways to get creative play ... And this thread is starting to help me get my head around it, I think.
Personally I've only developed social anxiety the last few years after some acute experiences of isolation, but I've found using a bit of makeup in phases now and then helps me overcome it, especially on days when I feel most averse to being seen but have to go to the store or something. For me it feels like a disguise to step into, even if I don't really feel inside like I'm put-together and ready to face the world. I'm finally right now connecting the dots between that feeling and the idea of stepping into a "role"/portraying a character that's different from one's sense of inner self.
I wonder if maybe part of the reason costumes help alleviate social anxiety for some people is because a costume just automatically unambiguously says to others "this is who I am/who to see me as" when the wearer gets perceived, and thus lets the wearer just rest inside a substitute identity for a while instead of having to stay constantly consciously aware of their own. Like ... when you think about it, the term "self-conscious" literally simply means being conscious of the self. I can see why it'd be nice to take a break from that.
And now I kind of understand my lack of costume drive better, too, because I've always been the opposite to a fault lol. Self-awareness of who I am/present as in a social/role way used to be very hard for me, and I never was clear for a long time on what people meant by talking about "identity" until I got really introspective about it these last few years of growth and trauma resolution (might be because I'm autistic, might just be me, idk lol). So yeah, I'm new to the whole self-consciousness experience but it caused me to learn to enjoy makeup, and now hearing you all out about cosplay helping ease social anxiety has given me a lot to reflect on. I think I just learned a lot about myself and about others just from exploring this concept. Thank you OP and Micarah and everyone else who shares about these kinds of personal psychological experiences. I love learning from them :D

I've been getting my mom the holiday Barbies every year since I was little. The candy cane one (I think it was 2019) was my absolute favorite.

@@MicarahTewers i knew a cosplayer who would sometimes make armor. What she’d use this plastic stuff that can be moulded with heat from a hairdryer, and once it was in the right shape she’d spraypaint it the right colour. Maybe use something like that, and use a hot bent up clothes hanger or something to press in the details?

@@C.V.20 Aurora didnt know her parents for like 16 years of her life so they werent in the picture. Rapunzel, same story. Mulan and Moana had strict parents and werent really close to them, just honored them as respect for their culture. parenting is different these days

that "wear a costume to have something to talk about" tip is a good one. I was NOT confident or comfortable w myself when I first became a barista so I started wearing t-shirts with cool designs or things I like, which would regularly prompt positive conversation and got me good at conversing with strangers real quick

Growing up gay I was always told that it wasn’t okay to be myself, that I had to act a certain way and hide. I admire Micarah immensely in that she is herself, all the time, zero cares given. I hope I can be as awesome as she is some day.

You’re right to complain about them keeping your teeth. I had some rip off dentist say I only needed one side removed and as I told him I couldn’t brush them he stuck me with sodium pentathol and I went under. I awoke to find he didn’t pull the one side and within a week a wisdom tooth broke off. They keep the teeth so they won’t be charged with negligence and so you don’t have any evidence of malpractice.

Okay I’m two months late, but I’m going to second what Micarah said about wearing costumes in public-it is actually the best! I recently did two cosplays, one for Halloween and one for a convention, and people think it’s so cool. It’s a great confidence boost, and it’s so much more fun when you learn to let go what other people think of you! (Yes, you’ll be embarrassed or a little anxious sometimes, but it gets better.)
As always, thank you for another extremely entertaining video! If you ever feel burn out or just bummed don’t feel too pressured to post a video. Take care of yourself and make sure to eat proper food. And with the stalkers and stuff, that does seem like a lot of pressure so please remember to sometimes just take time for your self.
