    I culture my own nano phytoplankton and I poor about 6 oz a day in my 300 gallon system and my 125 gallon system. Keeps everything happy

      Thanks for the inputs! Any differences in terms of coral growth or nuisance algae?

      @@daveng95 there's been no problem with any algae's and my corals & anemones love phytoplankton. The ocean's are full of phyto allowing everything to absorb what it needs and wants to flourish.

    I would speculate 99% of people dosing live phytoplankton are drastically under dosing. The dosing should be based on the amount of life more than your water volume. I typically dose about 100ml per 100L per day mostly nannochloropsis, sometimes tetraselmis and occasionally isochrysis. The problem is unless you are growing your own or buying from someone locally it's just not cost effective. thus these companies recommend an amount they can reasonably expect people to purchase. In a 10 gallon nano I tried to overdose to the point where my salinity was rising because I no longer needed to top off and the water was green and there will no ill effects other than salinity rise. The 100ml per 100L in my main display has resulted in cleaner glass, more microfauna but nothing overly drastic. As far as the different species I believe there has been a lot of research done as far as what the nutrient profile of each phytoplankton is.

      Thanks for your reply! I have been looking for someone who uses it consistently. Do you see your nutrients increase with the dosing?

    • @captivebredcanada
      @captivebredcanada 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@daveng95 No, there are 2 key points 1) only dose what is going to be consumed. While I think it's pretty hard to overdose, it can be done and that would be how you'd increase nutrients.
      2) All the fertilizers contain phosphates and other things. You only add the phytoplankton after it has consumed the fertilizers.

      Thanks for your reply! So how do you normally start dosing your tank? Do you have a starting dose?

    • @captivebredcanada
      @captivebredcanada 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@daveng95 No I used my 10 gallon nano to test if overdosing would be an issue. I probably started with 100-200ml and worked up to 500. The only reason I went with this number is that is how big the bottles I store phyto are so it's easy to just pour the whole thing in :) Keep in mind my tank is very mature, all real live rock, and completely full of coral. Which is why I say what you have in the tank can be much more important then the water volume.

    Doesn’t lower nutrients. It actually adds to them. Especially when you have it in a bag in the fridge and not making your own dosing it fresh and very alive. The bag you ordered or anyone for that matter that didn’t make it themselves is barely alive if at all. It adds po4 by the landslide. Just go ahead and dose and run your tests.

      For the recommended dosage amount, it wouldn't even cause a dent in the nutrient levels.

    Great video, how much do you dose though, is it worth dosing if you don't have clams? Just a mixed reef with softies and lps?

    • @daveng95
      @daveng95  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I dose around half the recommended! So that’s 5ml per 100litre per day. Honestly I can’t say that I have seen a lot of differences in my tank.

    The only reason why you would dose phytoplankton to your tank is to feed a clam or filter organisms. You can add Phyto to increase the organic carbon in the water, or to add nitrates and phosphates. As phyto in small ammounts will not impact your tank much. In larger doses the algae may survive and bloom in your tank. And that is something you dont want to happen at all. If nutrients are available for phytoplankton in your tank, and a good ammount of the algae you dose survives, it can quickly reach exponential growth. And that is something not that hard to happen if you dose fresh live algae. You can measure how algae is consuming nitrogen and other elements as it starts to green your water. Using your tank as a culture media for the algae is not a good idea. PH can easily spike to over 10 in a live algae culture. There is no evidence Live algae will reduce anything in the aquarium, or combat another algae. Even in laboratory the axenic cultures get contaminated easily. What makes you believe a live algae will eliminate other stronger cells as dynos? which are between an animal cell and a vegetal cell. Capable of eating algae!!! biosecurity and sterile mediums are so important, because algaes cant eliminate other organisms by themselves. Unless you want a green reef tank, use bacteria, DrTim, Vibrant or other scientific tested products, that can be predict a more stable result.
