  • I got into a little trouble. The kubota b2601 compact tractor is caught in a very awkward position and I need to figure out how to get clear so I can continue building my first walking trail through the forest. Tune in and join me as the adventure continues!

      Good day Shane. Yes I am still surprised by the abilities of this compact tractor. And yup, I have to admit, it is a lot of fun running it. I look forward now to getting out and doing projects around the property. Have a great day today - Happy Easter!

    like the driveway video, every time i see the box blade get used: "this thing is just making a big mess..."

    I'm in the process of researching what brand and size tractor for a new property. The postings on this site have been extremely useful in many ways. GP, I so enjoy watching your videos they are informative on many levels as well as entertaining to watch. Great job and I thank you for putting these out there. I began thinking my tractor should be green, but it seems much more likely it will be orange.

      Good morning and thanks very much for the kind comments this morning Fred! I am happy you are enjoying them, along with the great comments folks leave on the channel. A big decision getting a tractor -lots of research and information to assess and compare. Whatever colour you choose is all good - just whatever is best for you and your property. Always important to make sure you test drive or at least sit in each one to make sure the space and ergonomics of the operator's station and controls, fit you comfortably. You'll spend a lot of time sitting in it, cause I promise, your chores list will grow once you get it. LOL. Good luck with your research and diligence ! All the best to you!

    GP, I started a similar project as well. I have a B2601 with the same loader and bucket as you. I measured my bucket dimensions (width and cutting edge thickness) and was able to mount a Heavy Hitch tooth bar to my bucket that helps with the roots and makes it easier to do some lite digging without stressing the loader too much. Take care and good luck with the trail.

    The trail is looking great GP. I'm hoping to start working on opening up some of the overgrown skidding trails on my property in the fall. I think it will be a little easier once the vegetation dies off. I picked up a Kubota L4200 this past spring along with a Wallenstien chipper. I think a box blade or land plane is in the not to distant future. Thanks for the helpful tips!

    I just bought a compact tractor. I haven't even taken delivery. The main focus will be on trail maintenance. My trails look similar to yours There are dips that need to be filled and some uneven terrain. The whole 2.5K trail system needs a refresher. It has been four years since your video. Would you still recommend a box blade? Or have you ever considered or tried a land plane?

    Nice video. I like your step by step approach. One quick question; how long, on average, does it take you to change out your attachments? For example, going from the front grappler to the bucket. Is it difficult? Thank you.

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      HI BG. Thanks- learning as I go but getting better as I do more. It is very quick. I would say no more than 10 minutes taking my time to drop the bucket and then line up behind the grapple hook it and latch it in and connect the hydraulic lines. The quick connect front end is a must for sure I think. Have a good weekend!

    Does the bucket do a good enough job at clearing the top level in the woods to make trails? Thanks

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good morning Adam.I tried it but didn't find it very useful at all. So much debris, branches, soft mulchy earth, stumps and rocks that I think the grapple and box blade was far better at digging through and smoothing the trail. Cheers!

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe an idea would be to get one of those tooth bars to help dig through and into the ground. That would probably help to get into and under the roots and little stumps. Good luck Adam!

    • @adamglanz4688
      @adamglanz4688 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would extend the top link out a little so that the blade on the back of the box blade is a little more aggressive.
    Eventually you will have to mow it with a brush hog or something. Remember this on the corners.
    I wouldn't worry too much on the wood chips. It will be grown over by next summer, especially if you put down some grass seed.

    You're figuring it out Gord with the multiple choices of implements at your disposal. In the beginning I was wishing you had the bucket on & eventually you came to this conclusion. Personally, my bucket would do most of what you have done here. Initially no implements on the back of the tractor would have made this a bit easier imo. However the box blade started working it's magic in relatively short order.

      Even though he didn't have too many heavier loads, I am always afraid of operating without a rear ballast when operating the loader. I would suggest a 3 point hitch ballast for weight in the back, it wouldn't stick out anywhere near as much to really be noticeable while cutting through the forest, but it would feel safe enough to keep the back on the floor. On my B2601, I don't ever lift more than 300 without something in the back. Especially since his area is a lot more hills than my flat backyard ranch.

    Hey GP, you did a fine job on your first trail build. Especially considering the ground you have to work with. Only suggestion I could possibly give you is make them a little wider for the equipment you may be pushing or pulling on the trails and stay away from the bigger trees because of their root systems. You have the gentle curves down already. You did a good job, thanks for sharing.

      Great videos could you do a video on th the proper way to back drag with a bucket what angle should it be kept at.Thanks

    • @grwolf272
      @grwolf272 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stephen Dawson when back dragging, the cutting edge plane should be parallel to your desired grade. The guide rod is helpful in my opinion. It’s tempting to point the bucket downward just to touch the dirt sometimes but that’s where knowing how the overall bucket height is affecting the grade. Gouging forward is usually a waste of time unless of course you have a skid steer. Just my two cents.

    How's she goin'? I was pleasantly surprised to see how good the box blade did on the trail. You have nice soil. A few big rocks here an there but for the most part decent soil. The low spots and soft spots from old rotten stumps can sure cause headaches but with the box blade you were able to fill them in and grade them off nice. The wood chips will make for a top notch trail for walkers or machines. Take care!!!

    "Walk the path of least resistence".... Build the path with least resistance.☺... Hopefully in other areas of your woods the ground will level up and all you have to do is use the grapple to skim the surface and remove debris to lay out your walking area. You did good here, the ground was troublesome, but it turned out alright, don't put all your wood chips out yet, let it rain on it a few times, ground will settle and a little more work will be needed to keep leveling it back up. But each time the dirt will get more firm and compacted, then wood chip it later. 👍

      Big Bigby you are correct. I walked my 175 acre piece of land several times and used rolls of flagging tape trying to find the best path. I did this several times and often would take down tape I had already put up and change my path. The end result is I have a great trail system through my property.. I do not yet own a tractor so I did it all with my atv, chainsaw, pick axe and lots of sweat.

    Believe it or not, but there are still die hards out there that insist on a geared transmission and think HST is a waste of money. Can you imagine the clutching and grinding you'd be doing in just this one video GP? I feel your pain turning up so many rocks....and those small vine roots make it an aggravation. I think you did a fine job with the tools at your disposal. It just takes time with these smaller tractors. But it sure is FUN though isn't it ?!! Good one GP and informative as well. Now for the wood chips.....

      Yup, so happy I am not using the shovel and wheel barrow anymore for these projects. World of difference for sure. And I am certainly a big fan of the HST. Cheers T!

    I was watching you back down the hill moving fill into the place you were stuck when you started moving really fast. I thought, “oh, he’s sliding!” But you just increased the playback speed. I about had a heart attack.

    I keep going between buying the box or not. I am about to level my riding arena again, and I am really leaning towards it. What you were able to achieve with it was really good, and I think really does prove it's use. I just wish I could find one used, LOL.

      Morning NNW. It's very useful and can be used for several different applications I think. Perhaps keep an eye on kijiji etc and hopefully something will come up. Good luck!

    Hi GP.....try using the bottom of the bucket when back dragging. You can use the levelling indicator to assist but the back of the bucket will dictate how much material you are spreading. Also this is much easier on the FEL and less susceptible to damage as the cylinders are less exposed. Enjoy watching and learning from your videos. Continue the good work...

      Good morning and thanks for the idea Mark. A couple folks mentioned the same thing. I wasn't sure if it was ok or not, because the hinges and hardware connecting the Quick attach is on the bottom so I didn't know if it was ok to drag that through the ground. Thanks again! Cheers!

    Hey GP! It’s amazing what you can do with your tractor and operator skills. GP are you considering what to do with your trails in the winter time? Are you going to even use it then? If so, plowing? Would you just hike or cross country ski? Just a thought, cheers!

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good day Tom. Yes that little tractor still surprises me as well. I don't think they will get much use at all during the winter but I guess we'll see what the kids and wifey decide to do. Something to think about for sure. Cheers Tom!

    OOOH for the luxury of a back blade with a hydraulic angle and tilt. Even a manual tilt might allow the blade to follow a different ground contour from the tractor slope. Adjusting the left or right 3 point turnbuckle would be a real pain in the back side. You made the best compromise using the box blade to pull / push fill into the holes. Our easy chair view always makes the job look easy. Thanks and take care.

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      LOL. Now that would have come in handy for sure David. I can see the benefits more and more of having a hydraulic angle and tilt. Cheers and all the best!

    Trails looking good GP, I've made a couple trails through the woods on my property with my b2301, always seems to take way longer than you think, I've found in some of the really uneven areas it's easier to haul in fill dirt from another part of my property and go over the bad areas rather than ripping up the forest floor.

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good morning Fred. Thanks for the advice - makes sense. I'll give it some thought and see where I might be able to gather additional fill. Cheers and thanks again!

    Nice job GP. Everything is a learning experience huh. I used a 3 point tiller for the first time today to regrade around my half acre pond. It's coming along but I've already discovered how I would do it differently next time. have a great week Cheers.

    Great start GP, I like the idea of the wood chips as well. They will make that trail easier on the joints and keep the mud down. You’ve mentioned a couple of times now about uneven ground, ever thought about putting on wheel spacers. I have 2in. all around and they turned my b2650 into a billy goat. They don’t add to the turn radius either if your concerned about that. Typically wheel base length has more to do with wide turning radius not wheel base width as much. Great vid as usual, keep them coming.

      Good morning Brett and Christina! I hadn't;t thought about it except in the context of needing them for using chains this winter but interesting thought. I may end up with them for chains but may leave them on thereafter. Thanks for the advice and info! Cheers!

    Greetings from the Lanark Highlands where the trees are tall, the air is clear, and the deer flies are still VERY alive and well!!
    Great job on the trail, GP! It never ceases to amaze me what that little B2601 can do!
    A couple questions... did you find the box blade generally worked better for this application than the bucket, or did each of them have their own benefits? And secondly, how did you get that (those?) bent tine(s) on the grapple straightened out? A little oxy-acetylene heat in Guy’s shop maybe? Thanks

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey good morning Prof! I think the deer flies must have headed east 'cause they are all gone here now. LOL. Both were helpful at different times - sometimes you need to be faced forward so was happy to switch it up there towards the end for digging and smoothing. We haven't properly fixed the tines yet - just simply used a long steel post for leverage and bent it back a little for now. Perhaps a winter shop project as I am in no rush to get them straightened. Thanks and enjoy the weekend (and the deer flies LOL)!

    • @profdave2861
      @profdave2861 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Happy Sunday Morning GP! Great to hear you were able to at least partially straighten the tines with a bit of well applied physics LOL! One of the advantages of the “commercial steel” in the HLA grapple is the ability to tweak it back into place if it gets bent. And even if you do have to heat it to get it right, since it’s mild steel anyway you won’t really be changing the properties (softening) much.
      Yesterday at the acreage I had 4 loads of gravel spread to improve the driveway, plus two loads dumped in a pile to continue working with. Can’t wait for the new L4060 to arrive to flatten it out and start digging out rocks! (And brush hogging and wood cutting and dam building and....and...)

      Hi Dave, I'm in the Lanark Highlands too and have been using my FEL and box blade to improve the trails on my property. In undulating country like the Highlands, the tricky part of using the box blade is dealing with the crest on the hills. The tractor tends to lift the box off of the trail as it goes over the crest. Am finding that I need to use the bucket on the FEL to skim the tops off the crests. In the hollows you have to raise the box as the tractor bottoms out ahead of the box blade.

    • @profdave2861
      @profdave2861 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Paul - thanks very much for your advice on dealing with the rolling ground. I’m a rookie with the box blade at this point (I’ve only used it on my driveway at home) but it will be coming up to the Highlands property in the fall. Where general area of the Highlands are you in? I’m about a half hour northwest of Perth.
