The Atari XE Video Game System (Atari XEGS) is a home video game console released by Atari Corporation in 1987. Based on the Atari 65XE computer, the XEGS is compatible with the existing Atari 8-bit computer software library. Additionally, it is able to operate as either a stand alone console or full computer with the addition of its specially designed keyboard. In computer mode, it may utilize the majority of peripherals released for Atari's 8-bit computer line. Atari packaged the XEGS as a basic set consisting of only the console and joystick, and as a deluxe set consisting of the console, keyboard, joystick and light gun.

Gotta be honest, this was my favorite version of all the Atari home computers. I lusted over the XEGS as a kid but just couldn't afford one. I managed to get a sealed one many years later. The user manual for FS2 is something to behold.

I remember seeing that commercial back in the day and thinking, "Wait, isn't the 7800 the main system? What's this XE stuff that doesn't look any better?"

I never really knew about this system. At the time it came out, I had drifted away from video games for a bit. I still had my Atari 2600 and enjoyed arcades. I did want an Atari 400 or 800 once. I think I already had an Apple //e, but all of these different systems fascinated me. The Sinclair looked cool. A friend had the Tandy Color Computer. I never really got into the Vic-20 or C64. Later, I did want an Amiga 2000 with the Video Toaster.

Atari: "Hey kids! DON'T play fun games on the NES. Play these games that only appeal to 65 year old retired pilots!"

The manual was great! It had lots of coding examples and made me write a simple shooter with the graphics mode that showed big coloured letters. It was fun :-)

To be fair, it was very hard to get new IPs at the time with the NES "restrictions" on devs. That is why atari pirated their lockout chip and made unlicensed games for the nes as Tengen. There are a couple OK games for the xegs, and it had fair processing ability. Obviously I preferred the NES as a kid and never actually had an XEGS until much later, but I did have an Atari 800XL and a bunch of carts so same thing minus the light gun games. The thing was basically a 2600 on steroids. If they released it in 1985 it maybe is a different story. By 87 Nintendo had the whole industry by the throat.

The 7800 did pretty well in the US,it outsold the Master System here and made Atari money.I don't know what they were thing with the XE Game System though.

If they made this console/computer 100% backwards compatible with all 8-bit family games from the Atari 400 to XL/XE, it probably would've been the ultimate one and held on a bit longer than how it did then. I personally think the console looks appealing.

Actually, They were more like 8 years old at the time because these were based on the old A400/800 line that came out in 1979.

Right, and of the 1983 XL updated computers, one notable that was never released was the 1400XL which would have had a voice synthesizer and 300-baud modem. Also planned but never released were the XLD versions of the 800XL (800XLD) and 1400XL (1450XLD) which had the usual respective features plus a built-in dual disk drive (hence the expanded casing for it).

I was a big fan of this system for one reason. The cartridge loader was diagonal and that changed EVERYTHING for me. Just kidding, I never even heard of it. Atari was was on it's death bed and corporately controlled at this point and were no longer innovators in the market and in a downward spiral due to lack of innovative management. WB tried to manage this market the same way it did movies. It's a surprise that they are still in business today while ruining other properties that they have acquired in the meantime.

And yet still it has one revolutionary game that is better than all Famicom/NES games ever released :)

I'd like to own a XEGS, since I've heard it has the best video quality of the 8-bit line. I have an Atari 800XL and some games for it. IMHO, Atari really wasted the potential of its 8-bit line. It looked great for its time, but that time wasn't 1987!

This is the only time Atari 8-bit computers are mention in the Video Game Years. You also failed to mention Star Raiders, which was a revolutionary game released on Atari computers in '79 and you had nothing at all to say about any of the amazing disk or tape games released. You did not give Atari computers a fair break.

Ah hell- all the ignorance. Atari Corp had a 16-bit computer line out by 87 and they were simply trying to unload all the old stock they inherited from Atari Inc. The old stock included the 2600jr, 7800, and 8 bit computer line. In all fairness, the Atari 8 bit computers were remarkable machines for their time with at least 1000 programs available for them. Hundreds of them were educational programs. Hook a printer and a disk drive up to it then you have a machine that plays games and writes term papers.

I always thought that console had a lot of potential, but typical of Atari at the time, had no clue how to manage it, and it never came close to being anything meaningful, and it faded away.

I grew up with Intellivision, Vic 20, Colecovision & Adam Computer. When I went to a friends house he showed me this system, I didn't understand what it's purpose was then + I thought it was ugly as hell with those buttons, and do you know what, " I STILL DO NOT GET THIS SYSTEM.".
Most pointless system ever created award should go to this thing!

The format of the game doesn't determine how good it is. The Famicom could also play disks, so their argument is irrelevant!
