    Neat, I've been using a similar Cisco ATA with my MICS setup for a while and it's worked great (particularly with caller ID trunk cards and hunt groups for automatic CID display on the sets).
    As far as connecting modular jacks to an MICS, I found some Nortel BIX blocks with built-in RJ11 connectors on eBay that work nicely for that.

      +Aric Vogel oh yeah, I forgot about those. That's a really good point! Thanks for.mentioning that.

    This would be great for connecting two building together. One building would have VoIP and the other would have a existing Nortel system. The Nortel system would actually act as a single extension on the VoIP system. Although you would have to use another ata as a phone line for the Nortel system, otherwise a Nortel user would have to call the VoIP phone system and ask for an outside line

    Same should also apply with one of those cellular desk phone/"home phone" adapters to use cellular service with one

    Norstar CICS 7.1 using SIP. Problem, after invoking the conference feature, when the callers hang up the two SIP lines used for the call remain locked. Supervision setting on the 0X4 are correct, understanding that there is no supervision, per se. Thoughts?

    So with these ATA’s… I guess depends on the VoIP providers setup. But for example, I know of a business, have 3 PSTN lines that “roll”. Main number is say 123-456-7890
    Line 2 is 123-456-0987
    Line 3 is -123-456-8790
    But only the main number needs to be dialled to get through. If line 1 is busy, the phone company rings line 2, if 2 busy, it rings 3.
    So how would that work with VoIP and these ATA’s?

      Right Travis. What you describe are known as “hunt Groups” or “rollover groups”. That’s how the traditional phone companies do it. In the voip world, there is no need to have a collection of separate phone numbers in a hunt group or rollover group. You simply have what are known as call Paths. Call Paths are just the number of rollover positions that the main number can have. So you might have 312-867-5309 as the main number with three additional call paths for rollover.
      In which case you would need a multi-port ATA like an Obihai 8-port.

    Aww, forgot about the 8x24... :/ Also, I was wondering would it be possible to do a video on the interface box that is used to connect the phone sets to the eMetrotel (for example, a look inside)?

      sorry, didn't mean to slight the 8x14. I don't see many of those out there any more.

    Here is one for you, We have a nortel system at our main facility. then 4 remote buildings that are bridged on our network. Is there anyway to take a line off the nortel system and transmit it over the LAN bridge to those buildings to a standard nortel phone? If that cant be done, how long can you run a twisted pair to one of those phones? (say I was to lease a direct pair from the phone company from our PBX to the other buildings?)

      so, Nortel phones can be attached to the PBX (the phone server) by one of two methods - TDM or VoIP. TDM is a 2-wire digital communication but cannot traverse a LAN via TCP/IP. VoIP, on the other hand is a LAN-based protocol. Only the Nortel BCM and CS series systems are capable of VoIP.
      So, bottom line, if you're systems is a BCM or CS1000, you can certainly distribute phones around the campus via VOIP. But, if the system is an older model (MICS, CICS, Option 11), then you'll need a cable connection.
      Great question. :-)

      @@thenortelguy Dovetailing off of this exchange, I'm the IT guy for a small business that's looking to lower their phone bill by switching to services offered by TPx (Telepacific). They want to deploy a VeloCloud that they say works with extant infrastructure to deliver VoIP. The infrastructure is a T1 line that supplies to a Norstar Digital Trunk Interface (NT7B74). I'm not totally clear here: do they mean to connect an Ethernet cable directly from the digital trunk to their "special" VeloCloud router? Would that work? I do believe the main PBX is a MICS as it looks exactly like the one in your videos entitled, "Install Nortel Norstar 0x32 MICS [part whichever]."
      Thanks in advance!

    How about people with a Startalk and VoIP ATA's? Maybe a video about CPC delay so your Startalk doesn't remain off-hook when your other party has disconnected and such?

    • @thenortelguy
      @thenortelguy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah, I toally get you on the Voicemail issue. All those stupid empty voice mail messages in the General Delivery mailbox. I did some reading about that. I guess those Cisco (and Linksys) ATA had issues with the disco supervision. But sounded like if you went with Obihai, the issue could be addressed. I just got an Obi, so I have to put that on my 0x32 startalk and do a bake-off between the two types of ATA's.
      Very grateful for you insightful comments. Helps us all out. :-)

      @@thenortelguy I have Grandstream ATA’s that I have on a 3X8 with DR5 DS. Set the CPC to 550ms and it works perfectly for calls you are on, calls on hold, and my BCM Call Pilot. Can also with the Grandstream set a busy tone to play before the disconnect signal when a line is busy. Not too bad. I have Cisco ATA’s as well I need to test to see what works well with Nortel systems with DS and I will report back.

    can you make a video on how to connect to a MICS? thanks

    • @thenortelguy
      @thenortelguy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      hi Juan, the process is largely the same. once the dialtone comes out of the back of the ATA (cisco spa), then you just connect that to whichever line port on the MICS where you need it.
      You can find old MICS installation manuals online pretty easily. That would show you where the lines connect (punch down).
      Good question though. Thanks for watching.
