i wish more people would discover his music again. i got lucky & tuned into a college station one night & they played stuff I had never heard. life changing.
This guy can't sing he's out of tune sound like he's tone deaf the song in the music is hideous anybody that says they like this music can't be serious
i live in Nevada City Ca, one time at a laundromat i saw a note on the bulletin board said: band needs bass player, rock n roll for local gigs--jonathan richman--i called it he said they got a guy but thanks anyway---this was in '92 maybe, he lived here for a while--at a mexican restaurant he'd just walk around with a guitar singing in spanish---quite quite the character
"he'd look up in the sky, he'd look the angels way" harpo did this almost every performance before his harp playing scenes in the movies. so impressive that jon knew his shit.
oh my god..... harpo and jon richman, i swear to god, are my two favorite inspirations. and he made a song about harpo. heart attack right now. life is just so good.
He has such an innocence to him. I love and adore him so much. My friend introduced me to him in the late 90s then something about Mary came out and they were in it. I love me Jonathan.
Those guys' names are Brennan Totten and Johnny Avila. Jonathan went up and down the California coast playing with them pretty much continuously in 1986-1989, maybe into 1990 even.
I saw this tour in Toronto. I talked to the drummer after the show. I think his name was Johnny Avila. I believe that he and the guitar player in the video(Brennan Totten) were the main back up plyers on the 'Modern Lovers 88' album.
In 1981 the Ann Arbor station (WCBN) played the live version of "Ice Cream Man" and I rushed out to get the record. Little did I know that was far from his best song.
Hi mate, cheers for the info! (I was referring to 1980s Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson, who is now a football (soccer) pundit on the BBC. Google him, he looks a lot like him. Either that, or one of the chuckle brothers.)
Being from Canada, I guess that reference went way past me. I did Google him and you are quite correct, they do look alike. I had no idea who the Chuckle Brothers were either, but thanks to Google again......they also bear a resemblance. Be well.

Thank you guys, for helping me smile big..27 years later.
Wow! There's Brennan Totten! He was my best boyfriend in 1973....Brennan, How Can I find you? Callie wants to know...
He makes it up as he goes along! A genius at work. Beautiful mind.
Great footage Big K! Nobody but Jonathan could get away with a sweater like that!
Cheers from OZ.

Very sweet, saw JR in small club in MN in 2003 ..good heart centered music.
whoever it is doing the backing vocal on 'where did you get' is great, the ML from around 1984 are probably still my favourite but this sounds great

@@jdbaldwin thanks dude, never saw this
Jonathan is a f*****g genius and this reincarntion of The Modern Lovers was the best by far, IMHO.
Amazing performance, brilliant tune, YEAH!.
Word to the wise...Harpo Speaks! is a great autobiography

If somebody else can do it, how come nobody else does?
Me figuring how it's always me cleaning the bathroom
Love this song. Was always curious how it would work live. Thank you.
Let the rest of the world watch and listen to whatever the hell it is they watch and listen to.

Grandissimo
Well, Miss Ehm seemed to enjoy the performance a lot. That's good. This would be MuchMusic, Canada's MTV.
Timmybear - The host is Laurie Brown, not Erica Ehm.
@@tedsands2189 Thank you. The hairstyle fooled me. I rarely noticed hosts in detail other than Dan Gallagher and Chris Ward. :)
How embarrassing
2024 ❤
Can any expert out there identify the backing fellows by name?
I'm no expert but Johnny Avila on drums and I believe Brennan Totten on goodtar.

@legit001 - Oh, my goodness, you're right. *apologizes, makes note to see optometrist* :)
