Though I grew up camping, (age 2 to 22:), I'm going to be making my own first tent purchase now at 47.. I'm alone in this world, and have been looking at a ton of tents. While knowing all the basics from back in the day, I wanted some help choosing which tent to buy ( a lot has changed these days), especially since I will be long-term camping. My main concerns are durability, how it handles rain, how breathable it is, and price. I cannot thank you enough for taking the time to make your video. You provided me with the knowledge I need to make an informed and, not so nervous purchase. I'm looking forward to watching your other videos.
+Holly Golightly I am glad this helped Holly. One think I don't remember if I mentioned; if you invest in a high quality tent it is well worth the money to buy a matching footprint (most better tents offer them). This is basically a ground cloth that matches the shape of t eh tent. It will add a lot of life to the tent.
Just went through almost entire "Basic Outdoor Skills" playlist and really liked it. I think you should do more videos like this, you certainly have the knowledge and your videos are great. Greetings from Croatia :D
2 years ago, I bought a Jack Wolfskin 4 person tent for about $400.00 CAD. It does weigh about 7KG, but I am VERY impressed with the quality! Thanks to arthritis, my wife and I are now base camp hikers, so the weight is no problem.
Great information to know. Canvas tents or tents with steel poles can be pulled behind you easily with a cheap plastic sled. This leaves all the room in your backpack for other items. Just FYI if someone wants to take a bigger or heavier tent. I have a black pine freestander that I use in the winter. They are really heavy but great for cold weather. Love your channel.
Excellent Brian. Wish we saw this a longer time ago...bought first, never used, then started learning. OOOPS...and we should have known better because we come from the corded phone generation. Thanks for all your help.
Ok, I''l never use a tent except for backpacking in real wilderness. And I use a low, stormproof tent made for harsh alpine conditions. But what I have found useful, is to have a small tarp - a big size ponch is enouh - in combination with the tent. I set up the tarp in front of the tent, so I have a dry place to sit outside the tent, and somewhere dry to leave gear. If were more then one, we just use more of these sheap ponchos anx link them together.
Good info on tents. Never thought that much about tents before. I second the opinion on the fiberglass poles, they make tents a whole lot easier to put up than they used to be. Good safety tips too. Thanks Bryan.
Alan Sawyer Thanks Alan. Aluminum are even better (because they are lighter) but they cost more too. There's that inverse relationship between weight and price again.
Great video Brian...Thanks for all you do for our American Kids ! You are the backbone of America...teach our kids right and we wouldn't have any of the Social problems that are rampant because of the way they teach our kids these days ! You and your instructional video rock !
I'm with you about using the Eureka 4 man tents with scouts, that's what we used in our Troop. Sturdy tents for a reasonable price, especially for the abuse the scouts give them. Nice video, good explanations. Keep up the good work.
You have always been my go to youtuber for any outdoors advice thanks so much for being a subscriber and follower to my channel I have subscribed since the beginning.
. I've got a tarptent double rainbow silnylon tent and love it for short treks into the backcountry. I'll be looking in to getting a bigger tent at some point for static camping with a larger group. Thanks for the great content once again, Bryan! Don't forget that some tents need seam-sealing after the purchase to enhance rain-resistance.
Breakdady I know, but I have to admit I have never sealed a new tent in all the years I've been camping and haven't had any problems that I know of. Maybe I've just been lucky. Although my brand new Browning tent I showed in this video leaked at one of the end doors and I'm not sure how to fix that. It kind of bummed me out to be honest ;-(
Problem with quality is as the time passes, it decreases. A 20 year old tent (from what I've seen) was made better than they are today, so I'm not sure something bought today will last 15-20 years. I've got an old army tent from the 70's that looks like it was just made, doubt I'll get that now. Anyway, great video, great info.
Very informative video Brian, thanks for passing this information to us. You won my ten chocolate rating! Out of the ballpark with this one! Today I learned something new.
This channel is awesome! Subscribed! Thanks to you im now getting in to camping and loving it :D Can't wait to use these skills and tips in the Summer!
I am going camping on a beach where it will probably be pretty windy. I like the tent with the poles that are stronger than the ones with the bungi cords. I also like canvas better than the other products. I hope I can find what I want.
Canvas is crazy heavy for me. Our Boy Scout troop spent a week camping on beaches in the Outer Banks last summer in the REI version of this tent and they worked very well, including at least one very stormy, rainy night. They probably have larger versions. th-cam.com/video/FtGUIlaOux8/w-d-xo.html
I'm a designer student and as a degree work I'm going to design a rugged, ultralight tent for mountain climbers. If it somes to that stage can I ask you to critic the project?
An option that a guy might want to consider for car camping that Bryan didn't show up there is an ez up tent.My Buddy has a big Coleman tent that stays all put together and it collapses on itself me and him put it up in oh say 5 minutes in the Dark with flashlights at Charlotte Motor Speedway in May. And we may or may not have had a few adult beverages in us when we done it. It was dark when we got there and the World Of Outlaws Sprint cars were on the Dirt Track so we wanted to get over there and check it out set it up after the races while the other guys got the fire going. 3 guys camped in it 3 nights, then we took it down just as fast.
It isn't any different size wise broken down than a regular big tent. Not a survival item. But definitely saves time for fishing watching races hanging out with your buddies. Or whatever you might wanna do on a weekend camp out.
wow... thank you. thank you for taking the time to make this super informative video. I am feeling way more prepared when it comes to buying a new tent. I really appreciate it! :)
Very good. I use the eureka spitfire 2 its about enough room for me no way2 people can sleep in it. Very good point about fire always set mine up a good ways from my fire. I like that get a better bag Iam with ya no heaters ln my tent. Thanks.
so if you have a nylon flysheet 1,200 mm with polyurethane coating and a 75 D 185T, 100% polyester flysheet 5,000 mm, wich one is better? i have seen best ranked tents like tnf, mountain hardwear with a 2,000 mm flysheet and other cheap ones that have 5,000 mm flysheet
I am not an expert but nylon is usually lighter and probably more expensive. Silicone nylon is probably the best mainstream choice unless you get into more "exotic" textiles (translated crazy expensive)
Is a candle safe to burn inside a tent? Maybe inside a metal cup? It shouldn't produce carbon monoxide but dioxide and the tent should have enough ventilation to extract that right?
Survival On Purpose I just bought a "weekend tent" a 4 person Ozark Dome tent for a camping trip with my sister next month. I was trying to brush up on tent life skills and saw your video. Thank you again. 😃
Great overview of tent and shelter. Big old Canvas tent, we called them prospector tent. Still in use for prospecting in the North. Love cabin tent for 8 to 12 when family camping. I just bought last year a Erika 8 person tent self standing and it is perfect for my travel. Super great for too but house 4 when needed even with large air matress. Great review 9 more to do keep it up. I,m a little jalous of your shirt. Lol. Atb Louis
ya i guess for commercial compagnie they don't like the tax requirement in this province for free draw. most contest are ruled this way : eledgibility, everywhere except Quebec, Cuba etc...I whish i could of won one, I really dig there product. maybe one day, i'll find a way to get one.
It's fun (Not) to be the only part of Canada where it is against the law to win free stuff from company that is unless they pay the damn taxesand monopole on lotery from gouvernment. one day I'll buy one myself somewhere.
This was very informative. Do you have any suggestions on waterproofing? Additionally, we have HERDS of raccoons in Ohio. I suspect you do as well. Any suggestions on keeping them from their site besides packing everything up and then unpacking in the morning? Your channel is awesome.
Just keep the food picked up. They especially like Koolaid and Hot Chocolate (don't ask me how I know). As for waterproofing, good tents and seam sealer. Maybe Scotch guard
+Ja Si I don't really have a lot of experience with them, but I will say that many times you get what you pay for. I think Coleman probably does a good job providing a decent can't at a budget price, but if you were looking for higher end features like really lightweight probably need to plan on paying for those.
Outstanding video Bryan! (sp??) Excellent overview of the major issues...a veritable Tents 101. And I especially like your address of the safety issues with tent heaters and close proximity to fires. I agree 100%. I've seen videos about using and/building DIY tent heaters, and all kinds of alarm bells were going off in my head. Thanks again man.
Shoto Kido I know. I still see them for sale in stores and I just don't understand it. We can't buy those plastic ball on a string clapper things we had when I was a kid anymore but the carbon monoxide generator is fine ?
Survival On Purpose LOL! I can't believe you brought up Clackers....and I LIKED those things too. But in any event, I suspect the problem is that it's adults killing themselves with tent heaters. By contrast clackers and lawn darts were killing kids. As a society we seem to take the position that it's ok for adults to earn Darwin awards.
You are probably right, but all too often I seem to hear about a father and son not waking yo in a tent while using a tent heater. It's just pointless. On a lighter note, my wife bought some of the new, safer lawn darts. They consist of a couple of really flimsy target rings and some plastic "darts" with something like a half rubber ball on the end to cushion the landing. They lasted about a week before they fell apart.
Technik Ecke Thanks Mario. I'm really glad you like the video. I have several more in mind to add to the ones I've already done about basic camping gear.
I've been doing a lot of tent camping this year in rainy conditions. I originally used a ground tarp under my tent (as a footprint/protection), but found that the tarp would trap rain water into a layer between the tarp and the floor of my tent, which would lead to seepage INTO the tent. This past weekend, I didn't use a ground tarp and found the ground under the tent stayed dry and I didn't have the same issues. Does anyone else have any thoughts on this? Is it still better to use a ground tarp? Or is it better for drainage to go without?
Matt Sommer I realize I failed to mention this but I always make sure to tuck the edges of the ground tarp under the tent so nothing sticks out to catch the rain. Many tents have matching "footprints" that are the same shape as the tent and just enough smaller to avoid sticking out. Trying this might solve your issue.
Last summer I was camping in Pennsylvania with no ground tarp and dude it flat out poured 2 nights in a row and I didn't have a ground tarp, my stuff didn't get wet in the tent. I have camped in a tent in November in Michigan without a ground tarp when I might have wanted one because the ground was a little cold. I was taught to use one, but in my experience, I don't feel like you need one.
First off, a big thank you for making this video. It is extremely informative. So I presume that even a standalone tent needs to be staked if there are strong winds. Does the height of the tent matter i.e short er tents have lower center of gravity which equals more stability? Would be great to see some info on that and properly staking out a tent.
Hey guys, I recently put up a tent in my garden just for testing, we haven't got grass so I couldn't connect the rain shelter to anything so that caused, wet sides, very strong winds, is there any such thing as a tent made for hard ground (Decking, concrete) Please help me, I can't sleep because of the strong winds hitting the tent. Someone help ASAP! :P
Tiny Gamer Any self supporting tent should work as long as you can figure out a way to secure it to the ground. Maybe even sandbags would work as anchors on concrete, although i hope you have a good sleeping pad ;-)
Tiny Gamer It won't stop the wind, only God can do that ;-) It might be able to help secure your tent so the wind won't blow it away. As for the rain, it depends on what kind of tent you have.
I have a good rain cover but the only problem is me being unable to sleep at night because of the wind hitting the rain cover that isnt secured because it has pegs in the ground. Back when I had grass I just easily connected the pegs to the tent then to the ground and I could sleep without much bother by the loud wind, I just need to know is there some type of object I can use to put force on the rain cover so the wind wont be so strong?
Mukesh Pandya exactly this company hijacked this symbol because they are hidden Nazis. Just like the Chase Bank symbol..It's a subliminal message to the consumer that Nazis are controlling our commerce..
..well he reversed the symbol from the original which reversed the meaning.. the Bavarian Illuminati in Germany use Columbia as their occult namesake which is why the name is on the space shuttle, the district in Washington, their land claim in South America, and the Columbine staged MK Ultra school shooting..
Gee, thanks for 'splaining why we need shelter! I always wondered why we live in houses instead of just walking around naked outdoors in the rain and snow. Now I know! Oh, and thanks for 'splaining the difference between a tarp and tent! How about a whole series of videos 'splaining basic stuff like "Why we need food" and "Why we need water" and "Why we need eyeballs" and stuff like that.
You didn't have to watch it...lots of other people seem to have found this useful. As they say: "if you have nothing positive to say, consider saying nothing"
+sahlmort sounds like you like sleeping in the rain.some people don't know if you do stfu and move on. bet you couldn't last a week in the woods. i have live over 6 months in the woods
"Interesting, interesting, showing reasonable knowledge and taken seriously as a human being." bla bla bla Bible....whoa where did that come from? All previous statements invalidated, video terminated.
Immersed It would seem to me that allowing one statement you disagree with to invalidate all other statements is rather irrational. Does that make all the medical and scientific advances throughout history which have been accomplished by men and women who believed the Bible invalid? Not to imply that anything I had to say in this video is of the same import. Just drawing a parallel to your thought process, which seems to be rather self limiting. Why not open your mind to at least consider the possibility that these great men and women were as right about their belief in the Creator as they were about the ideas which led to discoveries which improved the human condition? In fact, why not sincerely say a prayer and ask God to reveal Himself to you. I think He will if you allow Him to. Go ahead, I dare you!
So, I said a prayer, now what? hahaha, the people that made scientific discoveries while under the same delusions admittedly advanced scientific knowledge, but then all future generations had the benefit of those discoveries and didn't need to subscribe to the same superstitious rubbish that it so effectively demolished. No, scientific breakthrough by an individual says absolutely nothing about the irrational beliefs also held, as they both come from different thought processes. Namely, one is methodical, logical and capable of advancing knowledge, getting more out than you put in, and the other, well....has no process at all, it's just "I believe this cos i wanna, it feels right". If someone has a conversation with me about something interesting, they immediately pay a price. They give up credibility. If they can believe truly in the easter bunny for no reason, then what else might they think? It's just hilarious and scary to me.
Immersed What I find interesting is the propensity for so many who choose to discount the possibility of a Creator to be insulting and degrading to those who do. As if disdain, sarcasm and rudeness are somehow equated with rationality. It brings to mind the phrase "methinks thou doth protest too much". And you don't believe in the Easter Bunny? I guess next you're gonna tell me Santa's not real. By the way, the key word was "sincerely". Just sayin'...
"I guess next you're gonna tell me Santa's not real" well I'm glad you can brush it off with humor rather than accepting the real equivalence of the two. Anyway, this is about tents, thankyou for taking the time to educate people, I just like facts, and the superfluous talk about magic put me off a bit. Just sayin'.

great video and good advice to those of us that don't go camping regularly ( or regularly enough in my case ) thanks Bryan, a very informative video.

maybe in your neck of the woods. Not much snow around here so I'd need some wheels on that sled.
Good tips and advice for tents. Every camper should see this video. Cheers Brian !
Stanley Sprow Thanks Stanley. I have a few other videos like this planned for sleeping bags, packs, etc.
Excellent Brian. Wish we saw this a longer time ago...bought first, never used, then started learning. OOOPS...and we should have known better because we come from the corded phone generation. Thanks for all your help.

One of the biggest dangers of any flame in a tent is the tent catching fire. The Boy Scouts have a strict "no flames in tents" policy.
Nice video. A nice review of things for even an old woodsman like me.

Its a great Video. Big thanks to you for sharing this Informations.
Greetings from Germany. Mario
Thanks for the tip... think I'm done with camping for this year, but I'll give it a shot next season.
The only reason I use one is to help protect the floor of the tent from damage. I don't think it does anything for weatherproofing.
good point.
very informative video. thanks a lot.

Very goos video. I took notes.
Thanks Tom. Probably time to update this topic. The basics are still the same, but technology keeps improving.
Survival On Purpose I will watch for it.
When I was in the scouts we had eureka a frames with steel poles. XD
+Patriot26 We had crazy heavy canvas tents and used sheet plastic when backpacking.
+Survival On Purpose I remember dividing the tent up between out patrol hauling it in. :) good times
Thank you, for telling me what a shelter is... I had no idea... (-.-)
+Raphael Loh glad I could help
Awsome chanel!
Erik Granqvist Thanks Erik.
First off, a big thank you for making this video. It is extremely informative. So I presume that even a standalone tent needs to be staked if there are strong winds. Does the height of the tent matter i.e short er tents have lower center of gravity which equals more stability? Would be great to see some info on that and properly staking out a tent.
+James Highland I would stake any rent in windy conditions. And I would presume the larger the outline the more susceptible it is to becoming a sail.
nicee thank you! :D
+Christos Ellinas Thanks
Will this stop the wind? And will this prevent rain from effecting my inside layer of the tent?
Tiny Gamer It won't stop the wind, only God can do that ;-) It might be able to help secure your tent so the wind won't blow it away. As for the rain, it depends on what kind of tent you have.
I have a good rain cover but the only problem is me being unable to sleep at night because of the wind hitting the rain cover that isnt secured because it has pegs in the ground. Back when I had grass I just easily connected the pegs to the tent then to the ground and I could sleep without much bother by the loud wind, I just need to know is there some type of object I can use to put force on the rain cover so the wind wont be so strong?
That's what I mean about the sandbags. Just use them in place of tent pegs and tie your tent and/or rain fly to the sandbags.
Why can't all TH-cam videos be this organised
Organized? That's something I've never been accused of ;-) Thanks!
no candles ??
+CJ SH You lost me
I can't see the video!!! I can hear but no picture

...it's funny..how the Columbia Sports symbol resembles a sublime swastika...sort of like the Chase Bank symbol too..
Eric Stokes Hmmm.
+biblical giants You need history lessons on Swastika, any symbol can be hijacked = lucky Hitler did not hijack Cross... just saying.
Mukesh Pandya exactly this company hijacked this symbol because they are hidden Nazis. Just like the Chase Bank symbol..It's a subliminal message to the consumer that Nazis are controlling our commerce..
biblical giants By your logic Hitler was working on Hindus and Buddhist hidden Agenda! Read again, what I wrote... cya have a good new peaceful year.
..well he reversed the symbol from the original which reversed the meaning.. the Bavarian Illuminati in Germany use Columbia as their occult namesake which is why the name is on the space shuttle, the district in Washington, their land claim in South America, and the Columbine staged MK Ultra school shooting..
I have the same shirt lol awesome brother great vid
"KNIFEJUNKIE13"

No I'm not Chriss from Prepared mind 101 to J bumbed everything....LOL
OMG i fell asleep 😔
Wake up! You're gonna be late!!!
+sahlmort I'm glad you found this helpful.
Thanks for watching.
Good video, very helpful. Thanks
