I cried during the concert and every time I listen to you guys, I found "seven" when I was 12, then 4 years later, your cd's found me as I dug thru giant crates of cd's at a yard sale and I was gifted all your albums for free since I was the only one interested, I got a full crate of cd's but listened to yours the most, alone in my room with just a CD player, as an isolated and traumatized teen, your music is the only thing that made my emotions make sense, helped me feel understood,... now I'm 25 and I am just grateful I actually got to experience you guys live, wowowow... one of my hearts biggest wishes... I'm still a very traumatized individual and survived some brutal assaults and serious s****de attempts, but your beautiful music inspired me to create meaning in my life... thank you ever so much, I love you all !
@BreezySonya Music speaks deeper than words can. So sorry you have gone through so much trauma. Please hang in there. You have value. I personally find hope in Jesus Christ and in the Bible. I pray you can find hope and healing as well. -All the best to you...
This live album is amazing. The clarity in his vocals and just the overall mix on these performances remind me of Clarity by Jimmy Eat World, in a great way! Never really had noticed the SDRE influence in that album, but listening to this concert I’ve thought about it multiple times! Anyways thanks SDRE what a treat
Saw them live last year and his voice basically sounded like the studio versions of music they made 30 years ago. The whole band was so tight. Probably in my top 5 performances I've seen
Listened to this song so much I wore out my CD in the mid-90s. To hear it renewed and made even more beautiful like this is an incredible gift. My heart, my heart!!!
I never heard of this band but as an aspiring English medievalist and occasional enjoyer of emo, I am incredibly delighted to have had this recommended to me. The animation is amazing and reflects the way I've been imagining Grendel, as a mass of darkness and nastiness, way better than any other illustration I have ever seen! I'll make sure to share this with my colleagues and professors! ❤ Edit: after looking them up, I have become aware of my ignorance
You're about to get a TON of inspiration for story writing after checking out their discography. Medieval stories and Sunny Day Real Estate are a surprisingly good mix
I also grew up to them. 13 years old when I discovered them, and im nearly 38 now. Seeing them for the first time live on May 1st. I've been counting down the days. My life will be complete!
Lyrics i could make out: "The rain was there, to wash away my tears, (Line sung in greek) The Rain, Rain, (How could you fall to pieces?) (How could you fall to pieces?) I wanted, to be them but instead i spread my rage, SUADE SCARRRS! THE TIME IS RIGHT! (Some final words i couldnt make out) Now, you can go listen to the original and sing along, everything lines up perfectly.
in the diary version jermey ends the song with two gut ranching cries of “WHY?” “Why…!” also the second i wanted to be them he says instead of “my chance” again he says “myself”
@@fallenangelcrimsonthe lyrics for the second part of the verse is, I wanted to be them but instead i spread my rage* They also finally added those extra lyrics to circles that he had sung in the 120 minutes set back then towards the end.
@@fallenangelcrimson The second part goes " i wanted to be them but instead i spread my rage. After the "i wanted to be them but instead destroyed my chance" line. I also jus saw em few days ago again, was bout 3 feet away, posted half of the song so you can follow the lyrics as well.
Still moved by Jeremy's voice and song writing. so stoked they are back and sharing their gifts for those that didn't see them years ago. gotta get this wax :)
Was waiting for this, my fav🖤 read this song refers to Beowolf & the monster Grendel he slays..this video finally shows this. Jeremy's voice is absurdly beautiful and can finally distinguish the vocals. The animation is dark & atmospheric, pulls a bit of a sad emotion outta me..poor fuzzy shadow monster😔
They are still in my rotation of favorite music. Along with The Posies, Ned's Atomic Dust bin, Sound garden... That was an amazing session. I loved seeing them perform live when they were in Seattle many years ago, when this album first came out. Perfect animation to go with it too! Bravo!
I already know I’m going to prefer this version of Diary to the original. The mix is so full and satisfying, and the performances are way tighter. Can’t wait for the full album!
This version wins for vocals easily..but the original instrumental for me is more enjoyable. Someone needs to mash up the modern vocals wit the old instruments!
Wow, this is a GREAT live in the studio version! I'll admit that I do miss the fury of the original, but I like where you folks are 30 years later--super smoothed out. See ya next week! ❤

Not only that, now you hear the vocals crystal clear and when you return to the original you can finally follow jeremys words, theyre so far in the backround of the instruments on the og.
To anyone that has seen them on this 30th Anniversary Diary tour, are they performing this song the original way from 1994, or this new way? I'm going to feel honored to hear either one on May 1st, just curious.
Greetings. Saw them at the start of The Diary tour, Lawrence, KS. They did it the original way. It and everything they played was absolutely amazing. You’re gonna love it.
There's maybe 2 videos of old grendel performances, 1 notable difference is the intro. They used to do this very slow, cord by cord melody n he'd say "this song is called Grendel" n the song starts. Few weeks ago, they started the song wit this new intro until the part directly before the lyrics started then back to the classic sound.
"the great former creation of spirits". It may be a valid argument that the story of Grendel is wrong. The Poem has been passed down through generations and skewed to fear! Many of have never heard the story of Grendel and the smear they speak of him....therefore, they (you) may witness this great art created by Sunny Day Real Estate and ultimately identify with the shadowy monster.....Like I do.

The original is best for for its power. This is more like a softer reimagining. It's good for what it is but it loses the power and anger of the original. I realize you are different people performing these songs now but there is something special about the original. Also,, nice touch how this is the tail of Beowulf
Well to be honest, the original is sung in a softer tone in the beginning, up until around the 2:00 minute mark and then I will say that is where the power and anger kicks in. It's nice to hear his vocals coming through clearly. As someone else has said, Jeremy's voice has aged like wine. I love EVERY sdre song, it's just so great to have a re-imagining to begin with, after 30 years! The animation is spectacular as well.
He sounds almost better than he did 30 years ago... Most people lose their old voice after a while, but his only got more beautiful. ❤️
Thanks for the opportunity to make the video for such a fantastic song. It was a lot of fun bringing the character of Grendel to life
