      1: It has to be a functional bridge.
      2: It has to get a sonic boom as a functional bridge... Not pieces of a once functional bridge.

    The end result is not exactly a catapult: it's more like an assisted launch for a rocket. You see, the "projectile" part still has active rocket engines. It would be more "fair" to detach just a cabin.

      Yeah, I would've had the rockets along the arm and then detach the cockpit from the end of the arm, instead of detaching it all in a big unit.

  • @Zirnike
    @Zirnike 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You should use the angle sensor instead of the altitude. The way it's set, if you're headed down from the top when you hit the speed setpoint, it'll detach anyway. The angle sensor would let you be sure you detach at the optimum point.
    Maybe add just a bit of weight to give you a stabilization fin for the flight?
    Also, check the cockpit weight. You might be able to balance the load with the engines in the axial direction - engines on one side, cockpit in the other, with just the cockpit and it's streamlining detaching. Use a flat connector to hold it to the side, with the detachable block behind the cockpit attached to it.
    I'm a mech eng myself.

    • @cericat

      Potentially too he's going to get better range out of about 35 degrees over 45. But it depends on the physics modelling in Trailmaker taking into account drag properly.

  • @quantum2330
    @quantum2330 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I'm 90% sure when they were talking about stacking servos, they were referring to "powered" servos, 1 servo spinning at 10kph + 1 server spinning at 10kph = 20kph etc.

  • @AgentWest
    @AgentWest 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You took a 10-minute topic and stretched it out to over 20! Now THAT is skill! :D
    On a serious note, servo stacking _is_ a thing in TM, but it only works if you power them. If they are free-spinning it does nothing. Also TM tends to get unhappy if there are large side loads (like a long support pillar) on hinges and such since those are not all that rigid at high loads. You can even see servos sagging when they were stacked to support the catapult at one time. Point is, making this catapult's base into a U shape instead of two separate pillars would have been way more stable.
    And lastly, why not use angle sensors instead of altitude? Would have been way easier to program the release angle.

    Happy Fun Fact: Modern windmill blades are constructed of carbon fiber and are designed to exceed 300+mph but rarely see over 150-175mph.
    Sad Fun Fact: The process of mining the materials and producing carbon fiber on a large enough scale is *_SO_* polluting, that it would take nearly 800 years of continual wind to offset the carbon footprint. Also they decimate the local bird populations. If you can get close to the base of one, it's like a boneyard...

    Timing the release to as close to the sonic boom as possible would have a greater dramatic effect.

    Kinda wish you launched just the cockpit lol. You could have moved the cockpit higher and put a detach block under it, I think it would have been covered by a wedge, plus the cockpit is still fairly aerodynamic which may have provided less resistance than the 4 wedges. I just think the cockpit alone would have gone further, plus wouldn't have been self propelled. so really you made a trebuchet inspired rocket catapult with a rocket propelled payload.. though, that sounds pretty cool and effective lol
