This reminds me when I was in the sixth grade. Back then the school had mimeograph machines. The teacher showed us how it operated (there was a handle to crank on it). It was my turn to make about 35 copies to give to the class for our homework. I went to the room with the machine with the stencil and started cranking. Instead of making 35 copies for the class, I must have made 1,000 copies (more than enough for every student in the school). I came back to class an hour later with the 1,000 copies. That was the last time the teacher asked me to run the mimeograph machine. :)
Pulling the plug is the first thing I would think of regarding a run-away machine. My husband owned a copier company and some people would call to say the machine wouldn't run at all. The first question the service dept. would ask is if the machine was plugged in. You'd be surprise how many times it was not...lol! This usually happened when the machine had multiple users.

We got a lot of messages and I had to make multiple copies to be distributed to different departments. Standing at the copier for 8 hours with one meal break was a bear. USN 1970-73
Mimeograph machines were fun -- but Spirit Duplicators that used an alcohol-based solution were way more fun -- the smell of the printed papers was great. Every school kid in America sniffed their ditto papers when they were handed to them. Photocopiers ruined all that. By the end of the 1980's, you couldn't give away spirit duplicators or mimeograph machines and all the stenciling equipment that went with them. The same happened to typewriters after desktop computers took over offices everywhere. Now, in 2023 you would be hard-pressed to find carbon paper to purchase if you needed some.
Somebody out of sight was watching and turning it on and off. The feeder seemed to be near the bottom and their attention was on the output. With both of those in mind, I bet the risk was minuscule.

My husband sold and serviced (INK) Roneo duplicators when they came out. Unlike other duplicators at the time, the machine could produce full color copies and the registration was right on.

remember watching the teacher run off copies on one of those hand crank machines. I loved the way he ink smelled.
