It's really such a shame that a creator with the level of talent that David Milch has cannot gain the level of appreciation that he so richly deserves. He truly is at the head of his contemporaries. I await any project of his with great anticipation.

I totally agree, blueskies. John From Cincinatti always left me with a feeling of hope and artistic freedom. I'm saddened by TV viewers inability to be patient and thoughtful sometimes. And HBO needs to give Milch another season.
But instead, Entourage (a show about media capitalism, corruption, and excess) stays on succesfully. Nothing against it, I just think we need something different as well.

John From Cincinnati is the show that caused Deadwood to be cancelled before its time. HBO was supposed to create two 2 hour special episodes to wrap up Deadwood story lines since they couldn't afford to produce it for its final 4th season - but no word yet. After HBO's failure to support Carnivale to its conclusion, it's hard to continue to respect them as they once deserved.

Was thrilled when I saw the rerun of this recently......Milch is a sweet and sensitive man who has struggled himself and has great empathy......my only problem with JFC is that he forgets that addiction can be pretty boring to the rest of us who put up with it, too......Butchie wasting his talent as a surfer is a big yawn....a one-note samba. Surfing is a closed system---no air gets in.

This is far and away the best show on teevee right now. Sadly, our unreflective and anti-intellectual nation of viewers will kill it ... and that's a goddamned shame.

I love this show and Milch is brilliant--compelling story, depth of characters, the way it's shot--it is worth multiple viewings from the start.

The fact is, it costs money to make shows. Bottom line.
Entourage attracts a lot of viewers. You have to understand, the average viewer is not someone who would contemplate the metaphysical. They are people who like to see simple plots. John From Cincinnati was probably the most creative writing I've ever seen put on screen. I knew it would not last long because it simply wouldn't attract the bulk of audience Time Warner deems necessary.

He is talking about AA. He is talking about God/Higher power whatever and that he works slower that folks like myself and those two would like him to.

Do you know the background of Deadwood? It would only have like 1 more season in it since in real times, Deadwood burned to the ground. However, HBO did release all the actors from their contracts making it near impossible for them all to be put on the same page again, but don't think that Deadwood could have gone on for 8 seasons. It was nearing the end regardless of what HBO did.

Does anyone know who the 'mutual acquaintance' between Milch and Ferguson is? Meaning who is he referring to that said 'there is a slow unfolding' taking place right now?

I don't care about the politics of show business. I want to be entertained. John From Cincinnati is a great show from where I'm sitting with lots of potential to become one of the best. Shows come and go ala Deadwood for whatever reasons, but the fact is is that I was entertained with Deadwood and have been so far with JFC. That's all I ask.

  • @3goodtimes

I agree. JFC is a somewhat Lynchian endeavor. It takes time, patience, and close attention to detail to enjoy it. I like to think about an episode and watch it again. It's really getting more climatic as the show moves on. I think the payoff will be rewarding. And it's certainly stimulating.
I hope close-minded people who don't like to think while they watch television don't destroy this show.

Yeah, I can't devote that many hours to shows that just get cancelled with no warning. Sorry HBO, you don't get my money any more.

And before people "neg me", I loved John from Cincinnati and wish it was renewed for a 2nd season. My point is, don't be surprised when good shows are cancelled. Thought-provoking shows tend to attract less of an audience because the average HBO subscriber is simpleminded. That's why the Sopranos went on for 8 seasons, and near the end it was just so boring it was painful. Tony's day-to-day life, him waking up, going to the Bing, etc.. yawn.
