On the topic of cheap instruments..... Back in the early 90s I was a poor college student and I ended up selling my old clarinet to a music store for $100. I later noticed pawn shops were selling the same clarinets for $70 to $80. I bought a few from pawn shops, sold them to music stores and made a few dollars. The next year I noticed, in early summer, right after school let out, the pawn shops had various instruments for really cheap. The students that were giving up were pawning their instruments so the pawn shops had a bunch and were selling those instruments for cheap. I bought as many as I could afford. I then waited until fall, when all the students were starting to go back to school. Buy when demand was low, sell when demand was high. I then made the rounds to the music stores and sold said instruments. lol I wasn't making a fortune but I was buying 8 or 10 instruments for $60 +/- then waiting 3 months and selling them for $120 +/-. lol Back in the 90s, an extra $500 or $600 was a big deal to a poor college student. Anyways, that was one of my hustles to keep my rent paid and food in my belly while I was in school.
I got my violin for about $25 at a garage sale. Came with case, bow, 2 shoulder rests, rosin, and I love it. I did replace the bow, as the adjustment peg was gone, but I’ve had the violin for a couple years, dropped it a couple times, and it’s still looking and sounding beautiful. I think it’s sad that you spent twice what I spent and you got a piece of trash.

I bought a $35 one off of eBay, and it not sounding so great has not put me off of learning to play, at all, because I know it is because of the violin. As I learn and improve, the violin's sound changes and improves enough that I can easily tell I'm making progress.

Yea sorry to say, but Amazon violins are usually not that great, because first off you’ll have to put the strings in yourself, and most of the time the material is very cheap and the varnish is fake but hopefully it’s an ok violin.
This is crazy to see, since I got my violin from Shar Music in Michigan where they set these up! Some years back I lived in Michigan and used to drive by them regularly. I had always wanted one, so I finally stopped in and got one on impulse. Literally on my lunch break. Rob breaking the violins makes me realize that when I was freshman in college, I used to put two thick books in side of my Bam hard case with no pocket.,, it was Bach and Carl Flesch scale books.. I just wanted to carry only my violin with books inside of the case. As time goes by,,, those books pressed the my violin's bridge , finally my violin got a crack under the bridge. I was stupid.... my mom helped me to pay for repair... (it was about $3000)......

In 1969 I was 13 and started taking guitar lessons. I had a 3/4th size acoustic guitar. My first electric was a Supro. I thought it was awful but looking back it was just not set up correctly and the strings were too high making it very hard on my fingers. Fortunately I stayed with it and eventually traded it for a used 1973 Gibson Les Paul Custom. That felt like going from the white violin to probably a $3000 violin.

Guitar Player here...Those inexpensive violins are probably finished with a polyurethane clear coat, similar to what is used on 100% of inexpensive guitars. Not sure what it would normally be on a Violin, but on the more expensive guitars they use Nitrocellulose as a clear coat. It is more expensive, harder to work with and terrible for your health! The film used on early projector reels was Nitrocellulose, and it's highly flammable. That scene from Inglorious Bastards is pretty accurate! That aside it is said to be a considerably thinner clear coat lending to less coloration of the tone, if you are a big subscriber to that. I've taken the pickups out of my Gibson Les Paul and put them in a buddies Epiphone Les Paul and the difference was so minimal. Mileage will probably vary with acoustic instruments as the body actually as to reverberate and amplify the sound. /longwindedrantoff
Best use I've found for a cheap violin. Put a cigar box guitar neck in it and have a 3 string git-fiddle. At least then you do have a better sound than a cigar box.
I previously has a $450 violin that I brought 8 years ago, save up for 3 years to buy it and loved it so much. but I don't practice much because I am too scare to hurt the peg the string the bridge while I tune the sound, i only use the violin when I meet my teacher, then 4 years ago I stopped, now can't even play ode of joy. Last month when I looked at the $450 loved dusted violin, knowing the love change to fear, and now it just remains with guilt, burden, and shame (I know , it sounds how you would see your ex) so I decide to give it away and start over. The pinky violin is the exact violin I ordered yesterday, it costs $50 USD. I think it will be a good start as a beginner again because I don't have to have the stress of "have best tool but suck at skill" 12:02-12:37 is inspired to me because, if you practice enough and your skill is good, even cheaper violin sound so good to basic audience. So the human who practice or not is a bigger factor than the quality of the violin. Side note: - I am from asian family with expectations stress - $450 in US = $2000 for my perspective because of country currency conversion. - now am an adult instead of a teenager, so saving up to buy something like this doesn't take 3 years anymore. Wish me luck on my new journey of learning-to-play-violin-again adventure!

Could you do a quick vid on how to set up a bridge? My bridge on my cello fell down and I'm not confident in exactly where to put it...? Thanks!
Next you should have a VSO with a professional set up.
A question on bridge height? Couldnt you shorten the one that's too tall?
And I feel like the white one is intended to be painted and hung on the wall
Pink one could be for Kirby music!
hello rob landes I am your fan, is perfect your music
I am going to buy a violin and learned it
Best use I've found for a cheap violin. Put a cigar box guitar neck in it and have a 3 string git-fiddle. At least then you do have a better sound than a cigar box.
what song was he playing during the blind test?
Can't beat the 99¢ violin I got off eBay back in 6th grade. 😂
Wow! 😂🤣 violin-shaped object 😆
I can't wait to show this to my students and parents! Thank yoooou! 👏👏👏👏
The durability test was just an excuse to destroy the useless violins 😂
Good job ROB LANDES 👍
I am officially offended, being the owner of a violin store and all.
Rob: at least you get it with the whole package
Me: that’s what he said
LMFAO the drop test 😂😂😂
11:58👈: this cracked me up😂👌
I saw you in one of Buttered side down's video of "Learning to Violin" and damn you are so cool, here is a sub
Anyone else not able to hear the difference in some of the violins through their headphones during the blind test? Lmao
“Smooth or warm or creamy “ I felt that
12:14 I did not know that a violin could sound tinny

I think it will be a good start as a beginner again because I don't have to have the stress of "have best tool but suck at skill"
12:02-12:37 is inspired to me because, if you practice enough and your skill is good, even cheaper violin sound so good to basic audience. So the human who practice or not is a bigger factor than the quality of the violin.
Side note:
- I am from asian family with expectations stress
- $450 in US = $2000 for my perspective because of country currency conversion.
- now am an adult instead of a teenager, so saving up to buy something like this doesn't take 3 years anymore.
Wish me luck on my new journey of learning-to-play-violin-again adventure!
I read *"I tasted EVERY violin on WiSH! (Yikes)"*
And I was like...huh..ok and I still clicked anyway XDDDDD
