  • This Video was captured at Kumbakonam Railway station which lies on the Main line between Villupuram and Thanjavur, Trichy. Came early to the station specifically to do a Rail Fanning session and I was rewarded with some unique captures. I hope you guys also enjoy the same. All the trains in this compilation arehauled by the Iconic ALCO locomotives ( WDM2, WDM3A, WDG3G ) and you also see the DMU service. Trains : Chozhan Express, Coimbatore Mayiladuthurai Janshatabdi, DEMU.
    Kumbakonam is a very important town on the Thanjavur - Mailaduthurai main line. All trains stop at Kumbakonam . This town is famous for the Maha Magam festival which comes once in 12 years.
    The Kumbakonam station opened to passenger service on February 15, 1877, when the then South Indian Railway commenced rail traffic between Thanjavur and Mayavaram (now Mayiladuthurai) for a distance of 70.42 km.
    Swami Vivekananda on a yatra from Rameswaram alighted at Kumbakonam station on January 26, 1897, and it was on that day in Kumbakonam that he gave his clarion call ‘Arise, awake and stop not till the goal is reached’ to spur the people of the nation. A grand plaque installed by the Railways in the station proclaims the importance of the event.
    Kumbakonam railway station is a railway station serving the town of Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu, India. The station is a part of the Tiruchirappalli railway division of the Southern Railway Zone and connects the city to various parts of the state as well as the rest of the country. The station was declared as cleanest railway station in Tamil Nadu and ranked fifth best in the national level in 2016.
    The class WDM-2 is Indian Railways' workhorse diesel-electric locomotive. The first units were imported fully built from the American Locomotive Company (Alco) in 1962. Since 1964, it has been manufactured in India by the Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW), Varanasi. The model name stands for broad gauge (W), diesel (D), mixed traffic (M) engine. The WDM-2 is the most common diesel locomotive of Indian Railways.
    The WDM-2A is a variant of the original WDM-2. These units have been retro-fitted with air brakes, in addition to the original vacuum brakes. The WDM-2B is a more recent locomotive, built with air brakes as original equipment. The WDM-2 locos have a maximum speed of 120 km/h (75 mph),[1] restricted to 100 km/h (62 mph) when run long hood forward - the gear ratio is 65:18.
