    I like how they simplified everything from the router jig to just leveling where the legs go. Shame that they didn't use the rest of the slab they cut off though. Goes to show you don't need to entirely spend hours flattening or filling all the voids to get good results.

    I like to leave the bark and pour epoxy over it to seal it, especially into the gap between the bark and the wood to glue it on. Comes out beautifully. Without the bark, it’s kinda not really a live edge anymore. Though I probably wouldn’t do it for something like a dining table.

    With such new pieces of wood, I'd be concerned of after leveling the leg holes with the router, that the tabletop would warp, and wobble in just a few months. Is 2 slabs the way they have it (one flipped) enough to combat the warping issue?

    • @adamchristophergrigg
      @adamchristophergrigg 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My dad has made a few tables like this. He likes to put some steel in a dado in the bottom of the slab. It seems to do a really good job of keeping the wood from warping.

      Nick G perhaps it did not cost more, however, he did purposely by consecutive cuts on purpose. It just seems odd, not bad, that he did not take advantage of that match. Otherwise, the episode was very good and useful.

    Routing only where the legs are is a smart move.
    I would have routed flat the whole thing top and bottom wasting lots of hours.

    • @dtom1145
      @dtom1145 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its a question of craftsmanship. And if the wood is not dry it will still warp and then not sit flat. I would be the time it took to fiddle with the recesses would be the same to flatten the bottom, which would also look more professional.

    • @KewlCrayon
      @KewlCrayon 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would've just sent it through the thickness planer a couple of times. The routed slots for the legs might make it sit level, but now you got a cupped table that will shed spills and cause things to roll/slide down.

    • @johnsmith-wc8gs
      @johnsmith-wc8gs 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KewlCrayon a thickness planer will not take the curse out of it. Assuming the planer is wide enough (most are 12") it will only flatten the surface. It won't take the warp out

    Question: Isn't the flat glue joint in the center liable to split and fail? Why not use dowels or biscuit joints in addition to the glue?

    • @RoastBeefSandwich
      @RoastBeefSandwich 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Not as long as the wood is dry to start out with. If it's wet, yes the wood will twist as it dries and might cause splitting - just not likely at the glue joint. Wood glue is stronger than the wood around it.

    • @Justin-C
      @Justin-C 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Barring outdoor exposure, wood glue's bond is generally stronger than the wood itself unless you're gluing endgrain which they're not.

    • @stevebengel1346
      @stevebengel1346 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Biscuits aren't really good for providing strength but they're decent at aligning the tops of the boards so you don't have to sand as much

    I am a fan of the show but this segment was a total disappointment. I design and build furniture including designs with live edge lumber and this piece might as well have come from Ikea. No thought as to the function or design of the base - just buy some common metal bits so it looks like every other piece out there. You lost the beauty of the book matched faces by joining the slabs together then not even showing the most interesting face. Take the time to make sure the moisture content of the wood is low otherwise your trick to recess the leg flanges will not hold as the slab will still warp as it dries. Take the time to flatten both sides of the slab, show some craftsmanship! The finish did not look close to anything natural.
    Guys, you could have done a whole lot better.

      D Tom, not everyone has the same taste. I think Tom S./TOH was keeping it simple because it's meant to be a DIY project where the hobby builder can customize it to their liking. Anyone who's that worried about warping can either 1) buy dried lumber and/or 2) select a species and cut with less warping, and/or 3) reset the legs after however many years it takes the slab to completely dry all the way through.
