A rabbi asked his pupils, “How can you tell when night has ended and the day has begun?” Many answers came forth. One student replied, “It is when you can see an animal in the distance and tell whether it’s a sheep or a dog.” Another declared, “It is when you can look at a tree in the distance and tell whether it’s a fig or a peach tree.” More answers like this followed, until the rabbi held up his hand for silence and said to his beloved pupils: “None of you are correct. It is when you can look upon the face of anyone and see that they are your brother or sister. If you cannot see this, it is still night.”
