Missed you guys ! Would love to hear your (current) plans for the future. I know that plans often have to change (Life Happens !) but it’s nice to see you back doing your geodesic magic again 😉
Thank you! Yep plans have changed. Boat life is not happening for now. Lots of awesome projects in the works though! Dome sauna in Alaska almost completed!
I love your Domes!!! I can use a drop saw or I think you call it a table saw, (I live in Australia but I’m Canadian). The more I watch your videos, the more I’m convinced that I could build one with a little help from some friends at times. I’m very excited to give you plans a try and will be buying some plans from you shortly. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos. I know how much time it takes to make videos.
You are more than welcome to ask here, shoot me an email via trilliumdomes.com/contact . When you get a plan from us, you're welcome to join our Trillium Domes Builders Group on Facebook, lots of discussion there!
I would love to see a hempcrete dome! It supposedly needs 12” thickness for good insulation, but can be wider than the frame and encapsulate the frame. You need a way to secure it while it dries, that part might be tricky with dome shape 🤔
Amazing! Your videos are always a treat! After watching this video i have been inspires to build a wallapini / sunken greenhouse that connects to a dome on one end! I will keep you posted as i start this summer! Thanks for all the inspiration!!
Yes it can! It's a bit trickier than the zomes but it has been done by a few folks from our plans. You will want to orient each hexagon and pentagon in an "up / down" orientation, then flash the panels accordingly, so that the seams lap over each other. I will hopefully have something written up on it soon.
what an incredibly beautiful share, thanks. Just had to subscribe. Looking forward to build my second dome, most likely a 1v made with Precious Plastic beams
These videos are so helpful, thank you! Any advice on building these in the PNW? Thinking of additional considerations for insulating against the cold, rain, and general constant moisture. Thanks!
How do you waterproof all the seams? I know most people utilize these designs for green houses so a little leakage is less of a concern but in the event you want a dome that is water tight what do you usually do?
I’m trying to find a good source for the mathematical formulas to get the strut lengths to the long points and the angle/bevel degrees for this method… it is not proving to be an easy task but i MUST KNOW at this point lol
Great video! I've seen this or very similar designs for about 40 years. I think they are great for a warm climate. This design doesn't offer much space for insulation though and snow load must be a concern as well. Have you ever built domes in some place like Minnesota?
You are amazing beautiful people who give me hope. I have to believe that goodness is stronger than not. Or I would go crazy. I want to build a dome and I’m going to make that happen. Thank you so much.
Please, a suggestion for you to consider. I wish that all video makers would include the date the video was made in their descriptions. I know TH-cam will say "x-days ago," but really? Who really trusts these dates? I don’t. So, including the date in your description or title would be helpful. For example, in this video, you say it is your 1st in a series. But if the date, in my example, is 4 years ago, that would give me a clue to search for more following videos😅. But if you really only did produce it last week, then I will be patient and wait for the next installment. This is just a suggestion to consider. Fyi - I am seriously looking at getting plans from you soon to start my first build. Right now, I'm just educating myself on the whole process. I am looking forward to more detailed information on the cladding methods using different materials. Especially how they are connected to the framework. Thanks for putting these videos out for us to study.
Hi there, I have discovered geodesic domes last week researching how to cover a playhouse in my backyard (overkill, I know...). I have been binging your videos and others since that. Loving everything about it! I have lots of 2x6s laying around and would like to use them, but i am wondering what cut to achieve the strongest structure for a 2v 18ft diameter dome. Should I cut the 2x6s into 1x3s and do a deeper frame than the 1x4s you are using in the video? Or should i cut my 2x6s into ~2/3s (with an angle cut of course). It will be the same amount of wood by frame, but I am wondering wether the deep frame profile really adds strength or not. (considering that we snow sometimes in NJ and I would like to add a swing from the top... Let me know what you think. Thank you so much in advance.
At 9:15 you mention that you should measure it to a 30 second. What do you mean by that? If it's 30 arcseconds in degrees, that's around 0.0083 degrees. Is that really the precision required?
@@johnnybayles7412 how long ago did you finish it? Geodesic domes seems to me to require quite accurate measurements and I'm afraid the warping might be too much as time goes on. But green lumber is the only thing I can get my hands on that isn't prohibitively expensive where we are, specially considering how things might go wrong while trying it out.
@@Norbingel it's been up for over a year and is a residence so it's heated with a wood stove. The wood is definitely seeasonedd at this point. It's actually the dome with the green roof at the beginning of this video.
@@johnnybayles7412 That's encouraging to hear! Can finally try my hand at one of these things. Is there any warping of note at all? How green would you say your lumber was when you used it?
I'm new to your channel so sorry for random questions but do you have any plans you shared that have been approved by an engineer? Or do you not even need that for code? And have you ever done one with just glass ? I really dislike the plastic but I really want to build one. Anyways thank you a ton have a great day
Hey there, just like any other type of conventional structure, all these plans can be approved by an engineer, but they have to be stamped for the individual soil conditions and project details. Yes, you can use glass, but I prefer polycarbonAte for many reasons
Also I understand the benefits of using the plastic but do you think about the long term effects of micro plastics? Please don't take offense I just am asking for an opinion on the subject.
No, they actually used to be more expensive! Unfortunately they do take a ton of time and I support anyone who has questions along the way so I have to make some kind of money from it or I'd just have to stop completely.

Not really! for a dome this size, 3.5" of insulation is generally enough unless you're way up in the mountains.

Yep, domes can be used in all climates. There are many ways to create as big of an insulation cavity as you need!

The deep frame definitely adds strength. You could rip 2x6 in half and do the deep frame method on my 18' dome plans and it would work a treat
@@johnnybayles7412 OK thank you so much!

Accurate to 1/32 of an inch or around 0.8mm.
Green lumber usable here? Or will it warp too much when drying?

Do you think this dome could be made with 12" x 2" boards?
Yep!
How can we speak to someone about having a dome or domes built in AZ?
So this method, you don’t put a bevel on the timber. It just works off the bevels from the cuts to form the down.
Exactly
