Really good interview! The interviewer was caring but not condescending and actually made Harimoto to open up. Such a good kid. Best luck with both college life and pingpong!

Why does Harimoto sound like an adult when he talks but sounds like a kid when he screams?

honestly , as much as i love chinese players, their lack of reaction makes it a bit underwhelming for me in important matches. harimoto's screams just gets me everytime. it makes me feel the eagerness and the comptetiveness of his and i feel motivated by it. i feel the fighting spirit and that might be one of the reasons he is the player i cherish the most. and i know as long as he keeps this spirit , he will always come back and play better no matter how many times he falls.

The interviewer had a typical Beijing accent for some particular words and mumbled the words out sometimes, which is usually a hurdle for people from Southern China to keep up with in a conversation. But Harimoto understands and responds well, which really surprises me. I'm sorry that Harimoto did not get into the finals in Olympics, but I'm sure he'll play well in men's team.

Beijing dialect is the closest accent to standard mandarin. No legit mandarin speakers should have difficulty understanding it… unless they’re not legit mandarin speakers

He seems so sincere and humble when being interviewed. But on the court his screams are really OTT. 😅
Japan still values mainstream edn while in China they provide a more “streamlined” approach with guarantee graduations from top colleges for top athletes it seems.

Harimoto is an incredible player, his backhand is one of the finest ever. But honestly, he needs to improve his capacity to manage stress and confidence. His screams are so loud on each winning points, so annoying and even stressing for his opponents.

    • @chimyshark

@@pappaflammyboi5799 you guys are both wrong, learning Chinese at home is much more difficult than learning Japanese at school where he uses is everyday. I grew up the same way, and know a lot of Chinese Americans who also did, yet all of our Mandarin pales in comparison to Harimoto's. Our English is good, we use it all the time at school, with friends and teachers, and our only exposure to Chinese, much like Harimoto, is at home, and most of the time, we reply to our parents in English. Harimoto's Chinese is incredibly good for having only Chinese spoken at home. It takes a lot of effort, but most of all discipline. It's very hard to learn a language from parents due to limited sample size (only 2 parents, only talk about parent-child affairs and used vocab is limited), limited utility and reason for learning, and rebellious nature of being a kid. My Chinese only improved after I became an adult and started hanging out with people from China, not just Americans, and even then I would constantly be asking what certain words are and I'd practice later by myself to memorize them. I commend Harimoto's Chinese listening and speaking, it's really impressive.
