This is exactly what I needed. I need to know the science and how to do it, rather than just a pattern. Thank you so much!
Instead of just give us the pattern to make the rainbow ball you make this video to teach us how to do our own pattern, I love the video
Isn't it better?
Thank you for watching!! :)
Excellent instructions. The best I have ever found and I have been sewing for 60 years (since I was 12) Thank you.
This is one of the greatest tutorials I have watched. Very informative. I appreciate you actually teaching how to do it and not just giving a pattern. I can now use your technique for a 24 inch ball I need to make. Great Job.
That was so clean and easy to follow. Thank you so much!!! I love that I can design my own spheres now with any number of sides.
I very appreciate your feedback 😊
sewing is just applied geometry thank you for the class.. i had forgotten all of this, i am grateful for your class again!
You're so right about geometry!!!
Thank you for watching!!!

This is so helpful! Thank you,for not gatekeeping this knowledge and for presenting everything in such a clear and simple way. I am grateful for your work. Thank you.
Thank you for breaking this down in an easy way.
I'm glad it's understandable
OMG An amazing simple explanation that works for any size.
If I knew geometry would be this useful I would have paid more attention in school!
Many Thanks
I'm happy to help!!
I loved geometry at school but I think only because of my teacher, she was the best!!
Thank you for your feedback!!
I'm very hard of hearing and was concerned when I saw that there was no closed captioning. But you are so easy to understand, that I had no issues at all! I am pattern dyslexic which wasn't a thing when I was in school so I never understood geometry or algebra. If you had been my teacher, I might have at least had some understanding. Thank you for a great tutorial.
I'm glad it was helpful and understandable (algebra and geometry were in my list of favourite subjects by the way).
Thank you for watching!!
Agree! Ditto.
I watched this without sound and still understood. This video is great!
Pattern dyslexia explains a lot about my geometry experience! I didn’t know that was a thing!
This was VERY helpful. Thank you. I'd much rather understand HOW to make the pattern and you explained it very clearly.
Absolutely learned everything I need to draft my own ball. Very clear instructions. Most other sites I looked at gave patterns or sold templates for various sizes but not how to make your own. Thank you!
Thank you for your feedback 😊
Thank you, finally a simple explanation!
This is brilliant - concise and to the point. Thank you!
Thank you for showing us how to make this pattern. This is saving me so much time trying to figure this out
Amazing tutorial, very clear, no nonesense and also relaxing.
PERFECT tutorial for making a steel pizza oven dome. THANK YOU!
Great!!!
Thank you for the feedback!!! :)
This is exactly what I needed. Your instructions are very clear, and I look forward to using this to make a decorative fabric covered ball this afternoon.
Wow this is exactly what I needed , I'm making half a sphere for a pizza oven dome , I needed a cardboard mold to place concrete mix on. this will help me make the pattern to cut the cardboard sheets, thank you so much.
And thank you for watching and your feedback 😊
Thank you so kindly for such thorough instructions, blessings and success.
Thanks! I am making a large sphere out of fiberglass needed to lay out my fiberglass sheets. This is perfect!
I'm glad it was helpful
Thank you. I love the way you explained how to make the pattern.
Most welcome!!
Very simple ! Thanks a lot ! That what I need !
Wonderfully demonstrated
This is exactly what i was searching for! A comprehensive tutorial on how to make your own pattern! Thaaaaanks! 💛💛💛💛

Great video and explanation!! The geometric construction of the petals of the solid was awesome! Thank you!
And thank you for watching!!!
This method works well, thank you for taking the time to create this video so we may learn too.
I'm happy to help!
This video is super helpful, thank you! I was nervous while watching it the first time because I cant understand maths but in the end its so straightforward that i had no trouble following along!
I'm happy to help!!
Thank you for the feedback
this was extremely easy to follow! I modified the pattern a bit so that the leaflet shapes were connected in the middle. I plan to add a face to my ball and didnt want seam lines going down his face (its also just hard to embroider on a round surface). So far its worked perfectly! Its not a perfect sphere, but its not far from it.
Thank you so much!!
And thank you for your feedback!!! Much appreciated!
@@IrinaSorokinaMyCraft You’re welcome! This was the first time I’ve made my own pattern, let alone modified one. Thank you for making it so easy :D

This was so helpful and easy to follow along!!! Thank you so much
Perfectly explained mate, great work.
Thank you! this is perfect for the project I want to do: decorating a globe light to look like a moroccan lamp.
Thank you for the tutorial. I'm pretty sure I learned how to do this back in primary school but that was decades ago and I kinda need it now. Fantastic video
You're the most welcome!!
When I learned this at school I had no idea I would use that knowledge somewhen :)
@@IrinaSorokinaMyCraft haha yeah I started sewing 3 years ago and all of a sudden a lot of my old school supplies came in handy, like French curves or compass 🤣
Now I know how to make sphere template, thank you!
what a clever method! i think, arithmetically, you can calculate the point E to point G distance: (length of hypotenuse CE)^2 / (width of your pattern). so in this example, it would be 49cm + 16cm (7cm-squared plus 4cm-squared), divided by 4cm. roughly 16cm. you'll still need to use a compass to trace the semicircles centered on point G and point H, but you should be able to skip drawing those first two semicircles and tracing the intersection to find the location of G. honestly, typing this out... the compass method seems easier 😅 but i never thought a sewing tutorial would get me to dust off my rusty geometry knowledge.
You went too far into your geometry knowledge :)
Thank you for the comment!! You've made my day!!
I tried doing the geometry myself bc I didn't really understand your equation. My solution was extremely complicated but for this example I calculated EG to be 13.25, which seems fairly accurate comparing with the roughly measured length @5:12 lmao
The equation I got is:
(w^2 +h^2)*tan(90-arctan(w/h))/(4h)
With "w" as the width and "h" as the height (w=4, h=14 in this example)
Brilliant, thank you! I need to make a half sphere costume, and was ettin desperate about how i would do that. Your explanation is very clear and easy to follow.

Thank you very much for this tutorial. I have just spent the last 5 hours trying to work out how to do this, and now that I have finally looked it up - I can.
Can anyone point me in the direction of a tutorial on how to make a pattern for something that is more 'pineapple' or 'tear drop' shaped please? Are there any free programs that can help out with this sort of thing?

Well done! However I was holding my breath about "what about the Seam Allowance" and there you are towards the very end adding it in. WHEW. I like to use faux fur and velvet fabrics to make large ball pillows. I mean BALL SHAPED not just circular as many people think of a round not ball pillow. So I prefer a larger seam allowance and add in zipper. Usually add the zipper on the very first two pieces sewn together. I have never gone beyond 6 to 7 pieces on a round but perhaps when I'm making 16-20 inch balls I should see if it makes any difference in the outcome say using the thick plus silky rabbit fur fabrics I love so much. HMMMM? Your quick easy to follow steps is quite helpful. Of course in my case I wouldn't just measure around a ball I would need to figure out that ahead of time. And there are a few ways to to that. But the easiest is old fashion math like you are applying today. There can be a wee bit of wiggle room when it comes to sewing especially with faux furs because they could hide a few flaws in sewing or pattern oops as they are pretty forgiving as long as it's not too big a boo boo. For my larger balls I like to use #5 coil zippers and leave up to 2 inches on each end of the seam of two pieces together back stitched and firmly sewn. Then baste the seam in between leaving no back stitches and about 2-3 inches of threads hanging not cut off on each end. Start the zippers half an inch into the firmly sewn ends and end the same on the other end. Of course put the zipper face down onto the wrong side of the finger pressed open seam wrong side towards you or up. So when you remove the basted stitches the zipper pull and teeth will be to the outside to use properly. I may or may not top stitch the zipper along the sides of the teeth. A lot depends on fabric and how close to the teeth I originally sewed and the slide moves freely. (On rare occasions I've added a 2" folded in half piece of fabric to hide the zipper entirely behind a pocket or if it were a jacket a wind proof piece. Anyway a lot of my choices are based on fabrics used for any given project and size. The more you make the more you'll grasp what you like and what you prefer to other options. Happy ball making...ps make a few white large snow balls lightly filled for snow ball friendly fights in your home with kids and teens. OK adults can join in the fun too. Years ago I got my start when I bought two adorable white ball cute toys about 10" all white fur with kinda an added face and head phones also all white fur and adorable. I was so in love with them I bought all but 2 int he store which only had 3. More than one person begged me to give her the pillows. NO WAY. Most times I would have but she could go to the store and get the last two and she finally did. I've been making bigger and bigger balls ever since. And not just white winter fun ones. I recommend making fill forms the same way but a bit larger to keep the form well. And I buy poly filled and foam filled etc. bed pillows on sale for great deals for my stuffing. Some balls take close to a full size bed pillow and even a queen because you may end up packing them firm but that all depends on what your final project goal is. For lighter ones I would never make super firm of course. Have fun and think outside the box but follow these simple rules Iryna shared here and you will succeed. I love this one.
