Yes this was Saturday evening TV in the 70s. I was young but we liked the Dick Emery Show. Innuendo went over our heads, very much like pantomime humour. I always waited for the character who said 'you are awful, but I like you'
Haha. Thanks for reacting to Dick Emery. He's very funny. My favourite character is Mandy, the one at the end who said, "Ooh, you are awful, but I like you." Please do more Dick Emery reactions. When I took my test a few years ago I was so nervous the car kangarooed out of the test centre. Because I was so anxious I went deaf and couldn't hear what the examiner was saying to me. Thankfully my nerves did settle down after a few minutes. My hearing came back and I passed. Wouldn't like to do it again though 😀
I had forgotten how funny Dick Emery was. I failed my first test but made it through at the second attempt. Had 2 no fault accidents in 51 years, no speeding tickets (more by luck than anything) and now living and driving on “the wrong side of the road” in Spain. Keep on reacting. ❤
Oh man, haven’t watched Dick Emery since I was a kid. Great to see you two laugh out loud at his characters just like we did when it was first televised. More please.
He was a big part of my childhood in the 70s when there was only 3 TV channels to choose from lol. Loved all his characters. So funny. My favourite character though was Lampwick for those that remember 😂
Jess you have such a great sense of humour, I think if we went on a comedy night together I would spend more time laughing with you than I would laughing at the comedian, your are so much fun 🙂
Saturday evening family entertainment in the 1970s, Dick Emery, The Two Ronnies and the biggest of them all by a mile, Morecambe and Wise. All were on TV far longer but the 70s was the heyday.
I went to a boarding school and they arranged for us to learn to drive. We paid Ten shillings each (50 pence) a lesson shared between two. I think that about eight of us took part and we all passed our test first time bar one who passed second time. Probably the best thing I got out of that school.😂
That line 'Oh I do like you but you are awful' is what Dick Emery is well known for.. its so well known & remembers from the 70's that a lot of us actually say it..
The Dick Emery Show was usually on at roughly 7 to 8:30 pm on BBC1. If I remember correctly, without consulting the BBC Genome Radio Times pages which are online, it was on Saturday evenings. Good grief, these are nearly fifty years old. The character actors with Dick are quite familiar to those of my generation. The actor with the 'Nervous Instructor' was Royce Mills. Michael Knowles was the instructor who took off with the vicar - Michael Knowles was regular cast on It Ain't Half Hot Mum about an army concert party in India during WW2. Anthony Sharp, the owner of the driving school, was frequently cast as supercilious professional or aristocratic types, notably a few years earlier in Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange. He worked frequently with Benny Hill and also had a role in One Of Our Dinosaurs Is Missing.
I am just old enoughto remember Dick Emery, along with other great comedians like, two ronnies, morecombe & wise, tommy cooper. I have seen this clip many times and still laugh
It’s great that in these times of such political correctness people can still laugh at Dick Emery….none of Dick’s characters were politically correct but he was incredibly funny😂
As a young kid I loved his sketch shows some characters you loved, you only needed to look @ the vicor with his false teeth to start laughing, he did a father &son routine with roy kinear, dad I've done it wrong again.benny hill, just had the edge.check out benny hill wife swap 1986.
Wikipedia: Richard Gilbert Emery (19 February 1915 - 2 January 1983) was an English comedian and comic actor. His broadcasting career began on radio in the 1950s, and his self-titled television series ran from 1963 to 1981. During 1953 he briefly formed a double act with Charlie Drake.[4] His television debut came in 1950 on The Centre Show on the BBC. He appeared on TV programmes including Round the Bend (BBC, 1955-56) and Educating Archie (ITV, 1958-59) and appeared with his friend Tony Hancock in several episodes of The Tony Hancock Show (ITV, 1956) and Hancock's Half Hour (BBC, 1957).[1] Educating Archie was a BBC Light Programme comedy show which was broadcast for nearly ten years between June 1950 and February 1960, mostly at lunchtime on Sundays. The programme featured ventriloquist Peter Brough and his doll Archie Andrews. The ventriloquist act was unique at the time as it was on the radio.
As you were talking about late night Television Jess... You brought back a distant memory of my childhood... When we used to ask our parents permission to stay up late... And watch several British Horror series during the 1970's and early 1980's... The first one was a series called... Hammer House Of Horror... The second series was called... Armchair Thriller... And the third series was called... Tales Of The Unexpected... And they were all quite scary for us as children... But we enjoyed being scared... Similar to the way that people like to be scared by Funfair Rides... They're typically not that scary to us now... But there are some episodes that can still make me jump... Even after all these years... And even though i know what's coming... You can still find several episodes and clips here on TH-cam... One of my favourites was an episode of Armchair Thriller Called... Quiet As A Nun... 👻 All the very best guys. 👍

My test pass was 30th October 1973 two weeks after a failure, of course my older sister was cock a hoop to say that she passed 1st time in the convertible shown in the sketch. The Anglia that crashed was a Ford Anglia. Wikipedia: The Ford Anglia is a small family car that was designed and manufactured by Ford UK. It is related to the Ford Prefect and the later Ford Popular. The Anglia name was applied to various models between 1939 and 1967. In total, 1,594,486 Anglias were produced. It was replaced by the Ford Escort. Unique variants of the Anglia were produced by Ford Australia and by the Italian subsidiary of Ford.
He was also in a few films in the 60s and early 70s including one called 'Ooh...... you are awful' which was based on the characters in his TV show. The plot was that he was trying to get a bank account number, the digits of which were tattooed on various women's bottoms! Very British saucy postcard humour of that time. The driving examiner for the vicar was an actor called Michael Knowles who has been in several comedy programmes particularly 'It ain't half hot mum' which was a big sitcom in the 70s. Not shown much now because it is considered to be 'racist' in these PC times but was very funny. He also appeared and even wrote some episodes of 'Are you Being Served' which I believe is on PBS in the States. Other great comedies from the 70s and 80s are Dad's Army, Some Mothers do ave em, Porridge, Fawlty Towers, Allo Allo and a slightly later one is One Foot in the Grave from the 1990's. As has been mentioned Harry Enfield is very good and the South African chemist sketch is one to see and also the caricatures of the 1940s Public Information Films one of which is 'Women Know Your Limits'. Finally as has also been mentioned Morecambe and Wise were the go to entertainment on a Saturday evening in the 1970s and also on Christmas Day with the Two Ronnies. Their Christmas Day 1971 sketch with the famous conductor Andre Previn is a classic.
Dick Emery was a very popular TV comedian back in the day. Unfortunately, his shows don't get aired these days. I passed my driving test the first time but the route was blocked off by the town council shortly afterwards.
I agree honestly in England we are engaged to have a motorway experience of a driving lesson it's scary I think there should be more input regarding motorways but Dick Emery fantastic look to Norman Collier and Bernard Manning Russ Abbot
My Dad also learned during the war and never took a driving test as such, however he went on to drive a Bus for years and then became a Driving Instructor (went on to help found the Association of Driving Instructors)
Dick Emery was always prime time! Try Kenny Everett a zanier character-lead performer. It’s not right to just call him a comedian, he was so much more. You’ll fall off your chairs watching some of his characters and stunts.
Hi Mike & Jess, I used to look forward to watching Dick Emery`s show every week when it was on. He was a very talented & creative comedian deploying his characters into different comical situations. Suggestions :- Dick Emery - The Milkman, Dick Emery - Bank Holidays .
Dick emery was a huge star in his day, millions watched his shows for years. And you are right jess, he had some fantastic female characters. Rip dick, thx for the memories

It's a song a childhood friend of mine made. He posted it to his Facebook years ago and I asked to use it for the the intros. I've tried getting him to post it somewhere, but no luck.
My 1st test was on my motorbike at 17. Arrived at the test centre in my leather jacket/boots etc. I sat inside with a few other people and across from me was the hottest and most beautiful 17yr old long blonde haired girl immediately making eyes at me, big smiles, almost blowing kisses! She was nuts! I thought what on earth? She's supposed to be taking a driving test herself and she's doing that?? She got called just before me. I passed my bike test 1st time and waited for this girl to come back from her test (10 mins longer for a car), but after 20 minutes there was no sign of her. Sadly I never saw her again and I knew she was a 'keeper' from the moment I saw her! 2nd test was at 25 in a car. It was hammering down with rain and very foggy, but it didn't deter me. I had the toughest examiner at the test centre. I did a reverse around a corner and scraped the kerb with a tyre. The examiner said, no, you're handbrake was still on a little, so I passed that, but I knew it was the tyre! He sent me down a long road with cars parked either side, so I gave them the required berth, slightly adjusting my steering. The examiner accused me of weaving between those cars! I said I was giving them the required berth, but he repeated twice I was weaving! I retorted more verbally each time, the last time I momentarily looked at him and firmly said 'I'm not effing weaving'!! He shut up then and 5 minutes later he passed me 1st time!
I'm from the UK and grew up in the 1970s watching Dick Emery. He played so many funny characters.
Yes. Everyone in our house would watch it.
James Maynard Kitchener Lampwick.
The Dick Emery show was one of the best in its day
" Hello Honky Tonk " and " Oh You Are Awful, But I Like You " are two of Dick Emery's famous / favourite catchphrases.
I still say oh you are awful and dad, I think I got it wrong again - my children growing up thought i was nuts 😂😂
Deserves to be remembered 😊

Was it really 1983 that he passed? That had to be around the same time that we lost Eric Morecambe. Two greats of British comedy.

I suspected from the start that Dick might turn up to be the driving examiner.
The desperate old woman character is called Hetty. There's a hilarious skit with her trying to get into a man's prison.
