I hope Larry is not feeling unappreciated by the fans, his legend is as big as GI joe itself. It’s Tough at conventions to convey to a legend (like Larry) in a few seconds of conversation how important their creations, art, and stories were to your life. I know it was for me.

Wow I didn't remember Undertow being part of the Iron Grenadiers. He was always my go to figure for the Cobra Hammerhead and I thought he was just an updated Eel lol.
I don't read the comics but that's great that Hama is still writing GI Joe. I appreciate your putting a spot light to what he's doing now. He won't be making GI Joe comics forever - best to appreciate what you have while you have it.

I know Larry Hama he is a legend most primarily known to write for G.I.Joe. He also wrote Wolverines and other Comics including the Nam comics not only that he was served his country as a veteran. I am shocked that there were some negative comments leveled against him I did not why and what reasons for these questionable comments but that is shameful Hama is not just a great writer who provided a great backstory to G.I.Joe but as I said he served in the Army and deserves respect. No matter what although I am not sure why please have some civility.
The filecard of the hiss tank driver stated they was a qualified expert of Fang. So I imagined a folded up FANG was inside the HISS. That could be unpacked, unfolded and locked in to place. While Destro's Dominator could be the second generation of that idea. By the time the Dominator was released I didn't have the capability to acquire Joe vehicles. But now I really want one. A few MASK vehicles sort of made it in the Joe's (cobra) garage. this Dominator... RHINO... Cobra Steel Crusher.
This was another toy that got reissued during the JvC days of my childhood. I wish my parents got me it, because I desperately needed both Cobra armor and air power, and this literally could do both, you could play with it either way.

Yes, Larry could use some more fans writing in. I have done this once until now, will be doing it more often from now on. The Dominator is odd and fun at the same time. Very fragile tabs that keep the tracks in place!

I think I remember one box saying it was Destro's personal vehicle, so I always thought of it as singular with him in one of the seats. The similarities of the side missile pods are one of the reasons I believe the RAGE vehicle was among a few "Cobra" toys originally designed for IRON GRENADIER before they unfortunately ended that great line. They kind of resurfaced in the M.A.R.S. Attacks line, but I don't think they were called Iron Grenadiers, or that there were any new Iron Grenadiers vehicles. Combo weapons traditionally don't work as well as singular designed to for one of those functions. The point of combo weapons is to be able to have some of the functions of different weaponry, not all of them. I always thought maybe the tank is weight might be offset by an anti gravity generator similar to the A.G.P.'s. Hasbro should n't have skimped and made the thrusters VTOL capable. To me the biggest flaw is how cheaply the toy is made. The treads are so clearly hollow, it's hard to imagine them working without axel cross bars attaching the two sides to a central gear shaft.
Great review, it almost reminds me of the vehicle in the movie The Three Stooges in Orbit, that was a helicopter, submarine and tank all in one. One thing I noticed that seemed to be on other vehicles was foot pegs for other figures to ride on. I'd love to write Larry Hama and give him an idea for a character that was a customized figure that my son and I came up with when he played with his G.I. Joes. The body was mainly from the Python Patrol Televiper, the head was from an Astroviper (I think) and the arms from a Python Parol viper. We came up with a codename and back story. I won't give it away here in case Mr. Hama uses it.
Don't forget, he played a North Korean soldier in the 1976 M*A*S*H episode, "The Korean Surgeon". I found that out in one of the Bullpen Bulletins profiles Marvel used to do in the 80s.

Michael Bell (voice actor for Duke) played a chopper pilot in one episode(He did quite a bit of television work in the 1970's and 1980's in addition to his voice over work). Jerry Houser (Voice Actor for Sci Fi) also appeared in one episode.
I've heard it theorized that Battleforce 2000 was originally meant to be "GI Joe the Next Generation", set a few decades into the future, and the Iron Grenadiers their nemesis also in the 21st century. It would have been cool if they had stuck to that, and then maybe brought in future Cobra too
Great video! Great review. I just had a thought: second year of the line, Killer Whale, 1990, this monstrosity. It even appears as though the hollow plastic syndrome is already in effect; looking at the toy, it looks like a chimera of sorts. There is also a spot, underneath the rear deck, where it looks like some piece should slide in. The treads look cheap as they are only molded on one side. The engines being exposed, no covers, the red color remains only in the cockpit area. I feel sorry for the kids that only knew 1990s GI Joe toys. Love your channel!
I own it, I believe it was one of the final vehicles I bought as a kid before I was “too old for Joe”. Sad. With that being said, the engine thrusters pull back and extend to make the tail end longer. My side machine guns never stayed in place like yours do. Weird. I’m with you, I liked it, but didn’t love it. And it always felt a little cheap on the design, but it was near the tail end of the line, so I guess I don’t blame them for cutting corners.
Is maybe the weirdest design and concept for a vehicle I've ever seen. Honestly it would make more sense if it an half separate from the tank to form an helicopter: after all it already got two distinct cockpits.
Probably this vehicle would've worked better as a toy and concept had the tank chassis be detachable to the flight section to explain why it had duel cockpits.
I love this channel HC and I'm a huge fan of Larry Hama's early work on G.I.JOE. Its hard to talk about because its a 'touchy subject'. But when the character Snakes-Eyes essentially became a girl, I had an issue with it. I don't want to offend any one who likes the change. If you do thats fine. I honestly hated it and bowed out when they did it. I've been with 80's Joe brand since its beginning. I'm aware of the entire IDW backstory to it so don't bother. I have a daughter and am cool with many of the female heroines of our times. I simply tuned out when they decided to kill off G.I. JOE's most iconic character.

I like the way the cockpits are spaced one slightly to the front of the other. An OK Vehicle and nice to see the IG were hanging on at the time! I wished they had done better and longer as a faction and in the classic IG traditional colors this is a winner!!!
As an X-Men fan, I absolutely love Larry Hama. I never really knew about his history with the GI Joe comics up until a few years ago, which I checked out recently and were an absolute blast to read, to me he'll always be best remembered for his underrated run on Wolverine (i'd argue the best writer of Logan's solo series of all time) since I'm mostly a comic book fan at heart and X-Men are my absolute jam. From his early issues with Marc Silvestri and Mark Texiera to his unfairly maligned bone-claw issues with Adam Kubert right before the Dog-Face era of Wolvie (seriously, there are so many damn good issues Hama and Kubert did together before issue 100), all the way through the forgotten Leinel F. Yu issues at the end when Yu was first breaking into comics, no one understood or wrote that character better than Hama except maybe Chris Claremont, but Hama has him beat in the department of "always show Wolverine doing/in the middle of cool, fun shit." You're absolutely right, the dude deserves way more attention than he gets, anyone that enjoys his Joe work would probably love his Wolverine issues and should check that run out, I highly recommend it. Some highlights - the first arc he wrote, which were also Silvestri's first issues on art, where Logan goes to war with the Madripoor branch of the Yakuza and even - GASP - dies?! His later two parter with Silvestri featuring a rematch of his Mutant Massacre battle with Sabertooth that becomes a triple threat involving Cable. Issues 48-50, which make up an overlooked/underrated unofficial sequel to BWS's Weapon X story, with some gorgeous art by Silvestri. The Silver Fox saga, revealing more snippets of Logan's mysterious past and art from the also underrated Texiera. The first post-adamantium issue, issue 75, as well as the following two that feature a classic throw down with Lady Deathstrike and stunning visuals from a young Adam Kubert. Issue 90, which features maybe the best Wolverine and Sabertooth fight of all time and Kubert in his prime on art chores. The four issue Age of Apocalypse revamp series, Weapon X (another fine Hama/Kubert jam), which gives us a glimpse of what an off-hinted at Jean Grey/Logan romance would look like as well as a surprisngly fun action/adventure romp in the midst of a fairly bleak larger dystopic story. And finally, Hama's last few issues with Yu (channeling equal parts Whilce Portacio and mid90sTravis Charest), where he attempts to set up a pretty interesting new status quo/setting for the character and gives us another showdown with Logan's former master and enemy, Lord Shingen. The less said about Hama's Generation X run, the better. But to be fair, every writer has to call a mulligan every once in a while, right?
I imagine a combo vehicle to be like a futon. A futon is an uncomfortable couch that turns into a lousy bed. However a weird way, I like this vehicle. I think of the helicopter is used to get the tank into position more then aerial combat. And under Cobra Commander, the helicopter could be used to retreat faster.
Nice review. Kinda wished that you mentioned that the Dominator got re-released somewhere in the 2000s in different colors. Also I spotted 2 typos in the video. And even if I don't really read Hama's work much, he deserves more respect than what he's given at times lately. Even if he doesn't write newer stuff, calling him things like a "has been" is rather disrespectful. And yeah, that's a weird looking vehicle, but it makes sense since its from Destro and its a fun looking toy.
He didn't forget the Razorback. He mentions it around the 6:16 mark, when he's going over the 1989 Iron Grenadier figures. Annihilator, Darklon & the Evader, and T.A.R.G.A.T. are shown, while Wild Boar & The Razorback are not. But Wild Boar and The Razorback are mentioned. HCC788 probably just doesn't have Wild Boar & The Razorback, and that's why it was only spoken about and not shown.
I mean the design of the A-10 was meant to carry a big cannon (the GAU-8 Avenger) like a tank. The A-10 is armored to take damage like a tank @@p.mc.4449
@@jamesclark2052 I agree. It's my most favorite plane. I was just talking about the G. I. Joe universe. Since Destro took the A-10 and retooled it. Hence, the Cobra Rattler. There really wasn't a need for Destro's Dominator.
@@jamesclark2052 So maybe not the Cobra Rattler, then perhaps the A10 Warthog Powerglide from G1? He was always a favorite of mine, as is the good old A10. They have retired it many times but it just keeps coming back.
In 2002 Hasbro reissued a repainted version of the Destro's Dominator. Yojoe.com only has the box, blueprints and decals (or at least it only appeared that to me) but Toyhax.com has pictures of the vehicle, although is a repro and alternative decal selling site.
Great review! I think the Destro's Dominator is terrible ! It has no creativity whatsoever. Hasbro got lazy with this one in my opinion. The concept was poorly executed of being a tank and helicopter in one. There was lots of room for improvement on this toy. Instead of two uneven cockpits, they should've made into one cockpit. I can go on and on, but those tracks made the helicopter feature look hideous!
I going to to have to disagree with you on this one. It's a poor toy. I have a love for helicopters and I am willing to forgive. Some reality. I still believe in air wolf but this helicopter just sucks amd makes no sense.
Big ups of course, to Larry Hama! That said, a flying tank? Flying. Tank. Oh no! GRRRR! Must...sma-JUST KIDDING! Seriously? There was a good reason it was probably only released in 1990, and it was a total insult a vehicle that size cane without a driver.
Such a dumb design. I dig the IG colors, but the only flying tank that exists is the A-10, as it's a tank killer, but kills from above, and doesn't need to compete on ground level. I also dislike the asymmetrical cockpits, they look stupid.
To be honest if you were to call it something it seems more like an armored recon vehicle than a tank. I like the idea but the way they designed it... meh.
I think you are being too nice about this vehicle. It is absolute junk. It falls apart if you pick it up. It looks good on display but I can't imagine being a little kid and trying to actually play with this thing.

Was just rewatching this, and realized it would be an awesome toy, if the treads were replaced with pontoons, similar to the dreadnok vehicle...

You are really going to enjoy the IDW run...mr. hama is doing some of his best writing & the art is exceptional! (particularly Netho Diaz's work)

Yu issues at the end when Yu was first breaking into comics, no one understood or wrote that character better than Hama except maybe Chris Claremont, but Hama has him beat in the department of "always show Wolverine doing/in the middle of cool, fun shit." You're absolutely right, the dude deserves way more attention than he gets, anyone that enjoys his Joe work would probably love his Wolverine issues and should check that run out, I highly recommend it.
Some highlights - the first arc he wrote, which were also Silvestri's first issues on art, where Logan goes to war with the Madripoor branch of the Yakuza and even - GASP - dies?! His later two parter with Silvestri featuring a rematch of his Mutant Massacre battle with Sabertooth that becomes a triple threat involving Cable. Issues 48-50, which make up an overlooked/underrated unofficial sequel to BWS's Weapon X story, with some gorgeous art by Silvestri. The Silver Fox saga, revealing more snippets of Logan's mysterious past and art from the also underrated Texiera. The first post-adamantium issue, issue 75, as well as the following two that feature a classic throw down with Lady Deathstrike and stunning visuals from a young Adam Kubert. Issue 90, which features maybe the best Wolverine and Sabertooth fight of all time and Kubert in his prime on art chores. The four issue Age of Apocalypse revamp series, Weapon X (another fine Hama/Kubert jam), which gives us a glimpse of what an off-hinted at Jean Grey/Logan romance would look like as well as a surprisngly fun action/adventure romp in the midst of a fairly bleak larger dystopic story. And finally, Hama's last few issues with Yu (channeling equal parts Whilce Portacio and mid90sTravis Charest), where he attempts to set up a pretty interesting new status quo/setting for the character and gives us another showdown with Logan's former master and enemy, Lord Shingen.
The less said about Hama's Generation X run, the better. But to be fair, every writer has to call a mulligan every once in a while, right?
I imagine a combo vehicle to be like a futon. A futon is an uncomfortable couch that turns into a lousy bed.
However a weird way, I like this vehicle. I think of the helicopter is used to get the tank into position more then aerial combat. And under Cobra Commander, the helicopter could be used to retreat faster.

And even if I don't really read Hama's work much, he deserves more respect than what he's given at times lately. Even if he doesn't write newer stuff, calling him things like a "has been" is rather disrespectful.
And yeah, that's a weird looking vehicle, but it makes sense since its from Destro and its a fun looking toy.

One of my favourite over looked Lara Hama runs was the short lived Storm Shadow series from Devil's Due.
I always tucked the blades under the spoiler when you slide the tail back in, thus locking them in place.
I had this toy, and I did the same thing with it.

He didn't forget the Razorback. He mentions it around the 6:16 mark, when he's going over the 1989 Iron Grenadier figures. Annihilator, Darklon & the Evader, and T.A.R.G.A.T. are shown, while Wild Boar & The Razorback are not. But Wild Boar and The Razorback are mentioned. HCC788 probably just doesn't have Wild Boar & The Razorback, and that's why it was only spoken about and not shown.

@@jamesclark2052 I agree. It's my most favorite plane. I was just talking about the G. I. Joe universe. Since Destro took the A-10 and retooled it. Hence, the Cobra Rattler. There really wasn't a need for Destro's Dominator.

In 2002 Hasbro reissued a repainted version of the Destro's Dominator. Yojoe.com only has the box, blueprints and decals (or at least it only appeared that to me) but Toyhax.com has pictures of the vehicle, although is a repro and alternative decal selling site.

Great review! I think the Destro's Dominator is terrible ! It has no creativity whatsoever. Hasbro got lazy with this one in my opinion. The concept was poorly executed of being a tank and helicopter in one. There was lots of room for improvement on this toy. Instead of two uneven cockpits, they should've made into one cockpit. I can go on and on, but those tracks made the helicopter feature look hideous!
I imagine the designers just randomly cobbling together some leftover parts from other vehicle prototypes.

Head cannon, it doesn't have a tank mode it has a mobile ground mode so it doesn't need a flat area to land and take off.
I had this toy as a kid. Even as a 9 year old it seemed like it was cheap and poorly made.

I going to to have to disagree with you on this one. It's a poor toy. I have a love for helicopters and I am willing to forgive. Some reality. I still believe in air wolf but this helicopter just sucks amd makes no sense.
Big ups of course, to Larry Hama! That said, a flying tank? Flying. Tank. Oh no! GRRRR! Must...sma-JUST KIDDING! Seriously? There was a good reason it was probably only released in 1990, and it was a total insult a vehicle that size cane without a driver.
Such a dumb design. I dig the IG colors, but the only flying tank that exists is the A-10, as it's a tank killer, but kills from above, and doesn't need to compete on ground level. I also dislike the asymmetrical cockpits, they look stupid.

Wildly impractical to say the least. Makes me miss the real-to-life vehicles of the early 80s.
I think it´s a nice toy and like it very much but don´t care for the tank mode, I only use it as a heavy assault helicopter.
Worst part about the Dominator is it doesn't shoot shirenkens .
The Iron Grenadier was a really cool figure...other than that I was never a fan of the series/faction.

To be honest if you were to call it something it seems more like an armored recon vehicle than a tank. I like the idea but the way they designed it... meh.
I think you are being too nice about this vehicle. It is absolute junk. It falls apart if you pick it up. It looks good on display but I can't imagine being a little kid and trying to actually play with this thing.
