Satin Doll and Smile - Live Performance by Sabrina the Songstress and her Jazz Trio

I truly loved performing these songs with the most wonderful musicians at the annual Gala of the Melanin Day School Academy in Sacramento, California. It was the first time that we brought this show, "Music from the Harlem Renaissance Era" to a live audience and they seemed to love it as you can likely tell via this video. And, I loved this very lively audience too! This has since become one of our most requested shows which we have now performed several times throughout this year of 2024--a true indication that this music is indeed timeless.
A bit of history:
The Harlem Renaissance Era of the 1920's and 30's was a most significant time in American history. It was a time that presented numerous opportunities to African American artists of all types (writers, singers, dancers, painters, and more) in cities like New York, Chicago and Philadelphia. Many artists fled the Southern States and came to these Northern States seeking opportunity and often fame and fortune. Nat King Cole and Duke Ellington were 2 of many.
The song, Smile, was written by comedian, movie producer/director & songwriter, Charlie Chaplin during the HR Era, and eventually given to Nat King Cole who made it hugely popular. It is a timeless song, even documented as the legendary Micheal Jackson's favorite song, and a song that is so relevant and needed today to uplift people all around the world! This song has a lot of history.
Satin Doll is a Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn composition, both of whom were a major part of the HR Era. This was the hit song that saved the Duke Ellington Band when the big bands were fading away during and after the Depression of the 1930's, as many of the popular venues were unable to afford to pay the expensive big bands that were previously a major part of the entertainment world.
