Is it Disney? I mean, it could be but I only see GM mentioned. I doubt GM had an animation department so they probably contracted out to a studio like Disney but I don’t see anything saying who it was contracted with.
High schoolers have to much going on to be into the trades that are so heavily looked down upon. What you need to do is be showing this to kids in grades 4-8 and introducing them to it earlier. They ditched shop class up here in Canada in high school years ago. I’d like to see it in public school with the basics and hand tools in mind. Now. With the obvious danger involved with even such simple tools as a chisel. Or even a screwdriver really… there would have to be quite a bit of supervision for the kids to ever get their hands on and try a lot of tools. But I’m sure a boat load of parents would volunteer with some time. Anyways just a thought.
I learned so much from this 75 year old program! Even in late 1980s shop class I didn't learn these things still relevant in today's world. Life may revolve around apps, but people still have homes that need maintenance, and unless you want to be at the mercy of today's contractors it's critical to know these things.
The credits are missing, but this was in fact produced in 1945 for General Motors, who held the copyright. Production was in fact done by Walt Disney, believe it or not, who created some industrial films like these back in the 40s.
sha 1om, well done to give credit where credit is due. Your note aptly points out the inter-relationships fostered by manufacturing. I was one of the last of a line when I started my pipefitting apprenticeship in 1982, completely in-house, at Eastman Kodak. Classes had been continuous from '37 to '82 then were interrupted for a few years, then irregularly until the '00s. Tragic loss.
I wish they taught this stuff in schools still. Cuz so many kids r growing up who can't change their car tires or drive a nail in, so I think every child when they hit high school should be taught these basics.. thxs for uploading this vid, it is wonderful to see these old videos
omg, so you must be the Elia that graduated last year. Apparently we have the same name but it's pronounced differently. Both Mr Street, and Mr Schafer have said that it's weird because they both want to pronounce it like you do.
I’ll give him credit, that *goofy looking guy in the intro could survive better than modern humans who would literally die of starvation getting lost on the way to the store without their phone gps*
kids these days have no idea how to use hand tools anymore. if it's not a "smartphone App" glad this is still around dates from 1945 actually but it holds up quite well reminds me of "first day of shop class" back in Jr High school --Rick
Love those old cartoons and their funnies, for example Primitive Pete is made at first to look like some hulking caveman and then revealed to be a little guy :DHowever, the video is incorrect to claim that humans live in caves. Some did, but human is a plains ape evolved to run distance.
I swear some of that artwork looks so realistic ........ those old Disney artists were really something. Thank you for posting this
It might be rotoscoped. Basically animators would draw over the footage frame by frame.
Is it Disney? I mean, it could be but I only see GM mentioned. I doubt GM had an animation department so they probably contracted out to a studio like Disney but I don’t see anything saying who it was contracted with.
We spend so much time trying to keep up with the new technology it's good to be reminded the basics once in awhile thanks cool video.
For someone like myself who wants to start taking woodworking seriously this is invaluable, thank you.
I was shown this film in my Jr high shop class in the 70's. I've been looking for it for years. Thanks for posting!
If they would have shown this video in shop class back in high school i would have learned something back then. love the old educational videos!

This is awesome. So many basic tools that we misuse and don’t understand. This is clear, precise, and gets the point across every time.

One of the best videos i've ever seen
First day of the semester - shop class: we all had to watch this.
It never gets dated.
My parents spoke fondly of Primitive Pete last night. I looked him up and found this. Thanks for uploading!
a video everyone should watch.
What a blast from the past. This was shown first beginning in shop class in late 70's.
Useful to learn English for technical use. Good old narration combined with good visuals.
The best educational cartoon 👍🏻
I enjoyed this throughly, thanks for posting!
I love this animation. It's awesome to see & and hear it after so many years! Watching this in high school woodshop or autoshop; classic! 👍
can watch this all day
Welcome to Primitive Pete guys, you're gonna have a quiz on it :))

Primative Pete was the best TOOL in the video,,, thats my Ol'Man lol
yup
There’s a kid in my class who slept to this in our class. He got yelled at but was still asleep, hope he’s doing good.

Used to watch this in shop class back in Jr high, on an old school projector.
Thanks for uploading this. I had to retake a test based on this video for some reason so thx!!
an amusing video but contains a lot of good advice
We watched these films in our shop classes back in Jr. High back in the early 70s
Who else is here after clicking on the link for the woodshop lesson?

I just found this while procrastinating sleeping 👍10/10 would watch to sleep again
All of this is tried and true and will forever remain the same. KNOWLEDGE IS POWER.

From my 7th-grade shop class. This and my Father's patient hand from even earlier have severed me well for 50 years.
severed you? Sounds like there was some misuse of a saw.
I was always told to never EVER grind on the SIDE of a wheel. 7:08 made me very nervous. I have a print version of this. It's pretty cool.
Primitive pete has the most fun.

As a Shop teacher, I showed this movie from 1981-2015. Search “ It Didn’t Have To Happen” for the other gem!
At 11:20, when explaining wrenches. Lefty loosey, rightey tightey.
I learned a lot, thanks for posting! :)

I was laughing to the video at the beginning, but I've actually learnt some things I didn't know at all about some tools!
It took twenty minutes in to the video. But Disney didn't disappoint on the 'Women, Know your place' front.
+StarDustSid heh
is she depicted to be worse at it than pete the man? no
get your head out of your ass, gynocentric white knight
6:03 65 years later, still nobody gets this concept.
Quite helpful info, actually 🙂

Are you a Street student?
I'm from street, are you?
I recently had to watch this video in an English class (I'm studying in Germany).
I like primitive Pete's style
This video is shown to US military members in some career fields to this day.
This is great lesson to make a man from fatherless me!
Found this interesting.... Even though im not interested in tools...
paul who? Top Quality Video (tm)
"Whats up Eliah" is definitely spam, I musta seen that 30 times in the past day!
1945 is about, or around 1950 so to say a film produced in 1945 is circa 1950 is correct.
I'm 40 and this is an old cartoon but the tools are manly the same all those years ago and everyone has been a primativ peat lol
shout out Mr. Street
Problem is…… when Good Ol’ Pete attached that first rock to a wooden handle, it wasn’t for busting rocks! It was for survival by cracking skulls!
