      not really. theres still massive compromise with any consumer headset. psvr is oled and has basically no sde, just low res, but came out in 2016. really incredible what sony did back then. i bought a g2. but im really waiting for a high res OLED with psvr like optics and base station tracking.

      You probably use lots of other sites that need your real name and you're probably fine with it... And to be honest everything on the internet tries to collect as much data about you as possible, so facebook isn't really that severe, take a look at tiktok, which is a data harvesting app in a coating of social media. Facebook isn't that bad and I'm more than willing to write my real name in yet another site so I could use a quest 2.

    Bought a Samsung Odyssey Plus last year for $450 new and have been thoroughly satisfied. OLED screens, sliding IPD adjustment, and Samsung won't brick it if you're found guilty of wrongthink!
    I think it's an excellent budget option, especially if you're mainly interested in games that won't make use of the controllers, like racing or flight sims, or Elite Dangerous (which the OLED screens are great for, perfect blacks for the blackness of space).

    Don't forget that you can use base stations and knuckles with the HP Reverb G2.

  • @asphere8
    @asphere8 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've owned an Index, Rift S, and Vive Cosmos Elite. I expect the Reverb G2 to fill the rift (ha) left by the discontinuation of the Rift S. The Rift S was the most comfortable and lightest-weight of the three headsets I've had and had decent build quality, though its display and tracking tech was the least advanced. It worked well even in the smallest room in my home. The Vive Cosmos Elite has the best build quality of the three and middle of the road display tech and comfortability on my small head. My main complaint with the Cosmos Elite is the lenses - the sweet spot is very small and is not in the the same place on both lenses, so I have to fit the headset at a slight angle. The Index comes in at the same price as the Cosmos Elite and has the best display and lens tech of the three, but suffers from serious build quality issues. In less than a year I've had to RMA two controllers, one trident cable, and the headset itself. The upside is that Valve knows there are issues with the design and makes the RMA process quick and easy.

    Unfortunately, back in 2018, the budget pre built pc was i5-7400, gtx 1050ti. While both are still fine in normal games, upgrading is kinda weird. If I choose to upgrade my gpu to rtx2060, my i5 would bottleneck it like crazy and wouldn't feel like a good upgrade. Upgrading my i5 also require a mobo change. I've owned the Lenovo Explorer WMR for about 1.5 years now. Barely use it, because its built-in headphone jack doesn't work properly; mobile earphones just hiss loudly, and my Sennheiser HD6xx cuts out after a few minutes. Tried a bunch of things, nothing worked. As a result, I've resorted to it with the HD6xx plugged into my computer, but with their 1.5m cable it is a shite experience, I've ruined the motherboard's headphone jack by repeatedly tugging on the wire too much, now the signal occasionally cuts out when just sitting still.
    As a VR headset it is fine though, but the sound situation is fucked up.
    Edit: for those with the same problem - Lenovo Explorer has a problem with USB not providing enough power for the audio (despite using the USB3 VR-Ready ports), hence the sound issues. Using a powered USB hub or a 2-to-1 USB cable join helps, if you have them.

    I really want to correct the idea that the Index(/HP Reverb) headphones are "the best audio for VR". They're not good compared to any headphones. If you're not comfortable with IEMs, the wide Index-style headband is an essentially impassable obstacle for anyone looking for good audio in VR.
    Also the 'hassle' of lighthouses is just plugging them into the wall, and setting them on something like a bookcase or a table or whatever. The images and videos showing the lighthouses high above the user's head and usually drilled into the walls is very misleading. They don't need to see each other anymore, and don't need to be plugged into the PC like the Rift's did. Also they *don't* need to be hard mounted.

    I spent £920 on a Valve Index.
    My opinions:
    I've enjoyed every experience with it but the image quality is still a little blurry, I have it running on lower graphics settings because I still need to update my PCs graphics card, so I wonder if that's it? As I'm short sighted, so I wouldn't have thought needing glasses to see things far away would be an issue here.
    Overall I'm happy with the headset, I'm sure there are better ways I could have spent the money but I couldn't justify getting a WMR headset for the price they cost in the UK and didn't want to go 2nd hand with the fact I work in a care home and am a little germophobic atm
    I wanted the best possible experience. But was shocked to find the novelty didn't wow me anywhere near as much as the hype made me think they would.
    That said, I was also surprised to find out that the base stations were no where near as much of a hassle as I thought they would be, and the controllers were really nice (if a little hard to get used to from a typical controller like xbox or playstation)
    My room is only slightly not large enough to support room scale which is disappointing, as I thought it would just allow me to have a smaller room scaled option as my room is so close to the minimum.
    I haven't used it as much as I thought I would, but I know that I will in the future. The previous guide helped inform my decision, and the free HLAlyx you get certainly didn't hurt either.
    7/10
    For now....

      @MintRobin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      About short-sighted-ness, I think that IS an important factor. The lenses within the headset bend the light to have the same input as something being genuinely far away, so maybe worth trying with glasses on, though I know that can be tough in index.

    Honestly I thought vr was going to be just a fad that was cool for a while then just a bit naff. I got a skin from the csgo operation and sold it on the steam market so I was like why not I'll get it if it's a fad I'll just resell it. Man I was wrong I've only been playing h3vr because I'm yet to upgrade my rx 480 but it's honestly amazing it's sad putting my Christmas stuff up because I've put my index away.

    Quest 2 would be totally the one and only option for people on budget. However, the fact that you have to have a Facebook makes me instantly not wanna get it.

    • @MatchTerm

      It's one year old, but it's still the best option overall: that just shows how much valve futureproofed this HMD IMO.

      @@dtre417 That's the vive, not the index: valve did work with HTC on the vive, but it's still from HTC, and that was from 2016.

    • @littlenickjr
      @littlenickjr 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      As someone who used to own a Rift CV1 and moved to the Quest 1, the original Rift is better than nothing, but lacking in many areas. You'll still get that full VR experience, but with much more hassle in the setup, and lower resolution than the headsets out nowadays. If you don't think you'll be able to afford the Quest 2 in the next year or so, I'd say go for it, as long as you don't let it put a bad taste of VR in your mouth as you keep in mind purchasing gen1 4+ year old tech in a quickly advancing industry. For example the pixel resolution is usable, but blurry, and to contrast current headsets have practically removed screen door effect. I bet if you buy it, you'll enjoy it, and then be wanting to upgrade when you can. Or maybe you won't enjoy VR, and then you will of only spent what you did :)

    • @freepok
      @freepok 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@littlenickjr well, it's not that I can't afford better, it's that beside Alyx, I don't see many worthwhile games, so it's a luxury already. The quest 2 isn't available a lot and is 350€ for the base model. Here second hand the first rift is 150€ and the rift s is around 280€.
      The hassle to setup isn't a problem with me, résolution, yeah, that could be a setback but 90hz is a plus compared to the quest or rift S.
      Do you believe the screen door effect is worth that 200€ premium?

    • @littlenickjr
      @littlenickjr 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@freepok That makes sense. If you already have a PC capable, and genuinely only want to play Alyx to check off that experience, I'd say it would be worth it. The resolution is not low enough to detract from the overall experience. And if you don't find any other VR games you enjoy, you could resell it yourself and make back most of your money.
