Three issues to consider with the Geekie hit. Schindler was in a slightly crouched position when contact was made. Geekie's initial contact was with Schindler's head. Geekie was moving at a pace that was close to charging. In Europe this is a no doubt 5 minute plus game penalty despite Schindler's body position. There have been calls that Canada could moan about in this tournament including the boarding incident in this game and the boarding in the Sweden game, but the Geekie call is not one they could complain about.
Being tall does not give you the right for a headshot. The player has to have control of his body regardless of size.

not sure what you were watching considering even the commentators say he didn’t jump and had his hands down… he couldn’t have been more in control, just got penalized for being tall
Hands down means nothing if you make zero attempt to get low, head was principle point of contact all day long, just because the nhl lets guys blow up heads when guys are vulnerable doesn’t mean it’s right or a good thing

Both the tackels in the sweden game and germany game the canadians turned there back to the hit when they see it comming. They cant just turn away from an already charging oponent and expect them to have time to stop. The Canadians put themself in an dangerous position.
yeah its literally one of the first things you learn in Peewee hockey, or used to. Now that canada is having hitting start later, and now that the game is going faster with less body checking: you are seeing lots of young players stupidly putting themselves in bad positions.
The hits I think should be 2 minutes boarding, even if they turned, at best. No way are they HFB.

The only call in that German/Canada game I disagreed with was the non call on a very obvious high stick that led to them scoring. I’m Canadian so I’m happy that they got the w but that was still an egregious miss call

Read the rules Zippy, initial point of contact the head is a major penalty and suspension in the NHL, and the rules in the juniors is much more stringent.

@@thereeldrummerboyA clean hit with no call is the Noesen hit on Slafkofsky recently. This hit was so much worse than that and is a perfect example of what should be a major penalty for a headshot. This is a 5 minute major by the book in the NHL, no contact with the chest at all. Primary point of contact (and only point of contact) is the head. If this isn't a headshot then there is no such thing and hits to the head are clean.

ok... but the player's visor caught most of the high stick... yes, it's still a penalty - agree with you on that... BUT, the player wasn't hurt and he went down like he was shot and was still trying to draw the penalty when the goal went it. Pathetic. If he gets up and not pull the "pussy soccer play" perhaps Canada doesn't score. Serves him right.

The world juniors actually tolerates “headshots” quite more than people think. But only if the player’s head was up & contact was unavoidable. He straightens up on this check & head contact could definitely have been avoided had he stayed low. Good call imo
yeah if he had stayed down it would have been a clean hit but he just stands up and aims high and hits the head.
there was a guy who said that there was like 53 hits to the head throughout the tournament that was very similar to that hit from all of the teams and it did seem very picky that they called that one and not any of the others when 2 of the them left the player on the receiving end down the tunnel for quite a bit

I agree. I was six feet at 14 so I bent my knees and drove my shoulder into the chest. Kids aren't taught to hit nor take a hit properly anymore. PS, we never turned our back to someone about to hit us. Especially a couple feet from the boards.

As a Canadian this was clearly a headshot. The hit from behind was the Canadian turning at the last second. The refs made both calls correctly.
They got both calls right. In fact you could probably argue they even got the Hauf call wrong because there was really no way to avoid that. He has to pinch Poitras against the boards or he gets by freely, but Poitras turns last second.

Rules are very clear outside of North America about contact with the head. Make ANY contact with the head it’s a five and game penalty. No ifs, no buts, just Boom, done. Players all know this and need to play accordingly. I have no problem with that rule and this particular call. Frankly, I wish that North American hockey leagues would adopt the same rule. It would be much healthier for players and avoid the almost automatic scrums and fights after hits like this one.
Yeah let's just have them play tag hockey so nobody gets hurt, and it becomes completely unwatchable. Turning it into a game for the weak. They want to take out all the fighting too, which has policed the game for decades.
Head contact is gonna happen literally every hit. That’s why the nhl implements the principle point of contact rule
very deferent when its big ice vs small ice.. the speed doesn't change but the quickness of actions do!! there should be a change in the na and world leagues to make the rules equal. chl vs eu leagues..

@@jeffhaggarty9879 Fighting is alive and well, they just don't talk about it and imo needs to be in the NHL when the refs lose control of the match and start missing calls. I think it was Domi who told an old story where he was protecting his star player and told the star player of the other team to "Tell your guys to keep their hands off him or I will be after you the whole game" and the other dude told his team to settle down. But that major? I think it's a pretty fair assessment point of contact/responsibility for the hitter to avoid going that high, to set a precedent for games to come so teams don't go too wild. People watch the international for the skill and the compete, to root for their countries and see new prospects, rather than the roughnose hockey. The NHL season / and more so playoff grind is for that.

i have watched hockey a long time.. and whenever you have biased commentators making biased analysis during the live broadcast, it always does something with the people watching and creates a mob. if you are objective and watch the plays canada is complaining about, there is nothing there. if you have the puck and about to receive a hit, dont turn and crunch down. Geekies hit is unfortunate because the primary point of contact was the head, so the call is automatic.
I think IIHF has done a okay job with these 5 min majors, i have more problem with all the smaller infractions that doesn't affect the game. destroys the flow. and changes the outcome.

@@KJpro12 he is right though..the greatest example of this, is when ray ferraro went to town to patrik stefan.. the puck hits something on the ice, unless patrik stefan was responsible for laying that ice that morning, its just one of those things that happened.. "patrik stefan you should be ashamed of yourself!!", and because he was a 1st overall pick, and had a bust career, that is what people remember.

You know, as a Canadian fan, I actually can accept that Geekie deserved a penalty - maybe even 5 minutes - there. The international rules specifically bar any contact with the head, and there was head contact. In the NHL, that's a clean hit - just yesterday, Juraj Slafkovský of the Montréal Canadiens got hit by Stefan Noesen in a very similar way, but no penalty was assessed. Rules are different, I'm okay with it. But what I'm not okay with is the referees being inconsistent in how they apply the rulebook. The lack of a boarding call in the Sweden-Canada game was a perfect example of this - the IIHF rules specifically state that the duty is on the player applying the check to ensure that their opponent is not in a defenseless position, and if so they must avoid or minimize contact. Owen Beck was in a defenseless position, and Forsfjall could've let up (as the rule requires), but he didn't. I'm not saying it should've been a major, but it's a minor for sure. That might've been called in the NHL...it definitely met the IIHF standard.
That said, I do think the IIHF does apply their rules more consistently than the NHL, leading to a greater degree of predictability. In the NHL, if you did such a hit like Forsfjall did on Beck to a guy like Auston Matthews or Leon Draisaitl, it would be called every time, and maybe even be a 5 minute penalty. Also, the NHL cares a lot more about the result of a play - if a player is injured, the call is more likely to get made, and a suspension is more likely to be assessed. But they should care only about the legality of the play, nothing more - players can only control their actions. They can't control the severity of the outcome - a dangerous play that doesn't cause an injury is still a dangerous play, and a player getting away with it is more likely to do it again. This is less of a problem in the IIHF.
What was Geekie supposed to do? Jump out of the way to dodge the player? This isn't women's hockey. There is contact. And if the standard of the IIHF is to "duty is on the player applying the check to ensure that their opponent is not in a defenseless position", then how come the hit on Poitras didn't get called a major? Sure Poitras turned last minute, but remember, the refs established the standard that it does not matter if the player is at fault. As shown by Geekie's example, the German player was totally at fault for not keeping his head up. So the same should apply for Poitras. The same goes for the high stick penalty against Canada for the follow through shot. It's not a penalty when its a shot attempt and a high stick. It's the inconsistency that makes it unfair. You can't just make up rules on the spot, But yet, the IIHF does this all the time.

It's because they feel like they're entitled to win, because for years hockey was "Canada's sport".
The problem is they don't realize that's not the case anymore. in the last 10 to 15 years the rest of the world has caught up. That's why they lost and got eliminated today, and lost a couple days ago to Sweden. Some will bitch and cry about not having Bedard and Fantilli, and I've heard some people say exactly that. But come on. Chicago and Columbus aren't sending down their top line centers to go back to playing against kids when they need to be focusing on rebuilding their teams.
It's someone else's turn this year. They just need to understand that the talent gap isn't the same as it was a decade or two ago.

German here, it’s two 5+game penalties both the headshot on the German and the check from behind against the Canadian. That’s simply the rules of the IIHF and I think it’s good to protect players.
I don’t get the “he turned” arguments from Canadians. It doesn’t make any sense. A high sticking penalty is not dependent on where the head is turning, but all about if the stick hits you in the face. The player is responsible for where their stick is, just like they’re responsible for how they drive their opposition into the boards.
Terrible referees, but Canadian fans are completely delusional if they honestly think they get the short end of the stick. They had so many unpenalized hits from behind in previous games and now that clear high stick, even scoring off of it.

@michaeloconnor229 Onus is on the player delivering the hit to ensure the safety on the hit (meaning no head contact). It reads in the frigging rules. So the fact that Geekie lays the guy down with an illegal check is all on him. The german player did nothing wrong. Skilled players figure out ways to get the puck from the opposing side without having to resort to illegal plays. Why is it that we have guys like Bergeron, Barkov, O'Reilly etc winnin Selke's for their defensive play? These players dont need to resort to illegal plays or checks to get the puck back. My point is that clearly the best defensive players in the league aren't necessarily overly physical or physical at all. Even the best defensemen in the league arent really physical. They are just smarter, they have better positional awareness, control of their body and stick control.
Rarely does delivering a major hit actually help your team. There is a huge chance you lay yourself out of the play aswell along with a risk of getting a penalty. Puck is usually gone a split second before you make contact with the player so you wont even force a turn over. All you did was watch as the other player passed the puck right in front of you and now their team has an attack going while you are behind the play. It would be smarter to just try to stick check/block while controlling your stride so you can go back to defend/get back to your position fast. And if you manage to hit the puck and get possession maybe even make a play. You can't do any of that if you are focused on checking the guy. You are literally useless.
Sure the massive check looks cool and gets you fired up, but there is always a time and place for such a hit and what Geekie did here wasn't a smart hit. And I also understand that some players dont have the skills to do anything else than hit, but unfortunately the NHL is becoming more and more skilled and hitting is getting less and less popular among the best players in the league because of how ineffective it actually is. And it has nothing to do with the rules, but more about your position on the ice and the effect you have in offense/defense.

Making calls for bad checks is going to be a difficult situation for such a fast game with so many players moving all the time. Players learn when they do too rough a move it costs them a goal so that is the life lesson. Keep the violence down.

Players are responsible for understanding and following the rules of the game in which they are playing. It does not matter if a hit may or may not be legal in the NHL. This is not an NHL game. This game is not being played under NHL rules. This game is being played under international rules. It only matters if the hit is legal/illegal under the international rules in which this game is being played.
I agree Sweden shoudve got the 2 but these are the rules, it’s a clear 5 minute penalty on geekie. You just don’t do something so risky the first thing you do.
I think in a contact sport any hit to the head should be at least a 2 minute penalty just to make the players try to avoid hurting the other person. Rugby have done similar always giving a penalty for head contact to make players more aware. Obviously you can call otherwise if the receiving end put their body in a way making it impossible to prevent a hit to the head but otherwise it should be 2

I disagree, the Canadian player clearly threw his entire body and shoulder and full momentum into the head of the German player... which is seriously dangerous for a concussion. The rules are intended to protect players, and this is a serious, potentially life-altering type of hit. The full energy of the check is directed toward the player's head, not his body.

I mean i could see the argument on both sides of it in the league Geekie plays in that would just be a big hit but the international stuff really doesn't do that its completely different playing style in international compared to like the North American game.

The hit from the Canadian is absolutely a 5 minute major, the boarding against Sweden was however a good hit it was from the side and no massive stride length was done before the hit. It was a good hit. Stop whining and learn the rules.

The fact there is so much talk about the geekie hit is somewhat odd to me. Just my opnion, but to me it looks like his initial point of contact was to the head and he also left his feet. Sure he kept his elbows down but the infraction didn’t occur with what he led with. It’s that it was a headshot. I do agree that it’s unfortunate. the angle he took was perfect and leading with the shoulder was good as well but just because it wasn’t intentional doesn’t mean it isn’t a penalty. Lastly it’s the IIHF and everyone knows what that means and if you don’t, rest assured that these players do.

Why don't they make calls on cross checks which has been a ongoing through out the tournament after the whistle Sweden is one example for cross checking a player and not being called I mean it was frequent.

The issue was that there was no penalty called when the German player hammered a Canadian player into the boards from behind.
Pretty braindead turn from Poitras though? The german player literally has no time to course correct at that point, and I can't really see how Poitras could have missed him coming.
The Canadian coaches should have ripped into Poitras for putting himself in a dangerous position. He had clear entry into the zone and for some reason turned his back to a guy he knew was right on his tail. If he doesn't play smarter he's going to get hurt bad.

Looking at his reaction, odds are he was going for a big hit to start the game and was amped up. He knew where he made contact, and it was high.

You seem a little too biased especially since that missed high stick is likely the most insane reffing moment of the tournament so far. And it kinda takes away something from the victory. Definitely the game I'm least proud of for Canada, more even than when Sweden handled us.

USA and Sweden look like the top teams every game, Canada a tad behind them. I don't get why Finland is so mid. Only things Ive disliked was the inconsistency in officiating and I really do wish Russia was in the tournament

The officiating in this tournament is the ice conditions. To me, the officials may not be biased, but just plain old bad. The later games in the day basically means they're playing on slush, with no cycling along the boards thanks to the soft ice and water. Disappointing to say the least.
Since when has officiating NOT been a problem in hockey. I've listened to the complaints for 60 years and it'll be the same 60 years from now.

Definitely not, the nhl celebrates these types of hits on vulnerable players all the time and allows tall guys to make zero effort to get low, it’s a joke if you ask me because they say if the head is the principle point of contact then it’s a penalty but you see the head being targeted all the time with zero repercussions in the nhl. Tell me how a guy can be out cold before he even hits the ice if the principle point of contact isn’t the head
agree on the geekie penalty (for this being in the iihf at least) but the high stick should have definitely been called and hauf was clearly trying to take his anger out with a very dangerous play against potrais and imo was intent to injure so i think that he should have also been ejected based on that. coming from an american dont hate either team was cheering for germany in this one but behind the usa i usually cheer for canada

He could have avoided hit on the head. This has nothing to do with size difference. Intention was to hurt opponent. Clearly. Better players can tackle without taking penalties.
They see guys in the nhl making zero effort to get low with no repercussions because hitting vulnerable players is celebrated rather than shunned in the nhl, can’t count how many times I e seen the head be the only point of contact but it gets let go because the guy is vulnerable and can’t defend himself
