  • In this video I take you behind the scenes in my WORST manuscript rejection, from a top 5 publisher. I reveal what commercial publishers are looking for in a memoir manuscript (and author) and how you can ensure a travel memoir or literary memoir manuscript hits the right notes for a book deal in the traditional book publishing industry.

You are so right about feedback. You have to be very careful who you share your work with,.

I wish I'd seen this video sooner. I stupidly thought paying an editor to help with my drafting process would be a grand idea. I wanted professional feedback, I wanted constructive criticism that would ensure my manuscript was headed in the right direction... I found an editor and sent him a scene I knew really needed some work. His sample edit of the scene crushed me. I got plenty of criticism - hardly any of it was constructive, and most of it had a mocking tone. I immediately sunk into such a deep depression. This was two months ago, I am only now beginning to pick myself back up and keep going. Beyond the obvious fact that this editor and I were not a good fit. It is very clear I am not ready for critique. I want to know that I'm on the right track, but I'm just not ready.

This is so common, Alexia, and everyone thinks a critique is the best way to improve then with memoir, gets completely devastated because it's personal, not just a piece of 'content'. But it's like having a go at driving and then having someone tell you what needs fixing in your approach (!) rather than learning the basics and being taught how to do it properly from the get go. Try to let go of the feelings that came up, and come back to the story YOU want to write and why YOU want to write it. Don't let it stifle your creative growth!

Dean Kootz says exactly the same thing about all writing. f we take into considderation all of the aspects of the 'experts' on You Tube, we will end up with the same book
