Our Beautiful Planet: Yosemite in Spring - Waterfalls, Rainbows, Full Moon

- Yosemite Valley in spring is one of the most beautiful places on Earth. The waterfalls are gushing, flowers are bursting forth, and happy photographers scurry through the forest. In this pilot episode of Our Beautiful Planet, a new vlog-style adventure and travel show I'm developing, I explore Yosemite Valley during the April 2021 full moon, hoping to combine the moonlight with Yosemite's towering waterfalls for a series of unique and special photos. Will I succeed? Watch the episode to find out. :)

WOW! Best Yosemite video EVER!!
I’ll never forget the scene I was privileged to see as a 14 year old standing alone at the rail atop Glacier Point late at night in 1961. A full moon had risen behind Half Dome bathing the entire area in its brilliant light making all the granite gleam white. Been searching in vain for a similar photo.

I loved this vlog! I was in Yosemite that same weekend and hiked up that road (the day after you) to shoot the rainbow at Bridal Veil Falls. I was at the Lower Falls along with about 100 other people to photograph the moonbow. Your photos of that weekend are spectacular. Just jaw-dropping. Yosemite truly is a gorgeous park.

The only hope of not seeing a thousand tripod holes is for them to avoid social media. You do a great job of non-disclosure on the other side. The throngs of feet are overwhelming most times.

I went drinking rather then photograph the moon last night. Damn it.. Not always clouds
Absolutely stunning. Maybe you could discuss how you determined how long your exposure needed to be under those circumstances to achieve the colors of the bow, keep some detail in the water, and not have star trails. Regardless, I loved it.

Beautiful shots! We're planning to visit Yosemite in mid-April 2024, staying in Curry Village. Since the higher trails will probably be closed, I'm researching the ones in the valley. I'm having a hard time getting info on the "Old Road" you walked to see such spectacular views of Bridal Veil Falls. Any information you can supply on that "trail"?
Nice video and great photos! Just as a note, the terminal velocity of the average human body is around 120mph so that is the fastest you can hit the bottom of that fall😀

Great image! And what an experience that must have been! Stitching worked okay even at 14mm? Did you use Lightroom to stitch?
Thanks! It was a marvelous experience. Yes, stitched in LR. I made sure there was about 50% overlap between images and it did well.

Thanks! To answer your question, in some ways yes. Certainly it would be easier to navigate. But then I'd either have to pack up a sleeping bag and pad, or spend a very uncomfortable, cold and wet night up there. It all depends how you prefer your discomfort. :)
