Galamian once told me that no student of his ever worked harder than Michael. It always gives joy to a teacher who sees his students make the most of their talent.
This is the violinist about whom Ivan Galamian said "He has no weaknesses." Indeed, one can hear near-perfection in his studio recordings. Here, he struggles quite a bit - especially between 4:00 and 4:30. He was a phenomenal fiddler and a great musician, though with personal problems which were not successfully sorted out. Thanks for the post.
Do you feel better about yourself that you pointed out Rabin's weakness at 4:00.The struggle you hear, is in your mind buddy....Every violinist is not perfect all the time, even Heifetz.
The other great Michael (Michael Jordan) struggled when he was sick on the basketball court too, you forgot to point out. We are all humans, not machines. In case you forgot that, but then if you are a machine, you wouldn't forget... :)
He played a couple of notes flat on the 3rd and 4th page and dropped a couple of notes on the opening arpeggio of the third movement. It didn’t bother me and I’m usually very critical. This is nearly as accurate as his studio recordings and the overall performance is unbelievably great. I actually probably prefer this performance musically to some of his studio recordings. I’ve heard Hilary Hahn, Leonidas Kavakos, Henryk Szeryng and Jascha Heifetz (who are probably the closest thing to perfection) in live performances drop a few notes here and there, but it was still great playing.
NO. He is just not at all at the level of his reputation. You wont find a Heifetz recording THAT far away from his peak. Does someone has to always write something positive or he should not write at all? Is that LIKE fascism or what? Rabin plays very much out of tune in too many passages on this recording. Still, you can hear he is something special. But, again, very out of tune.
@@leonardoiglesias2394 completely agree. Why is pointing out a objectively subpar performance a problem to some people. I like an positive audience and people who rather concentrate on music, but this is far from the Rabin I expected. Sounds sloppy... and that doesn't mean that I can play it even close to half as good as him, or anywhere near that. Just that it is not the out of the world Rabin I know. He must have had already been on drugs at that time.
It's very petty for anyone who tries to find fault in this recording, you're talking out of pure jealousy and envy, you should be ashamed of yourself. Heifetz was right when he said 90 percent of the people who come to my concert, come to hear me make a mistake. I am an intermediate violin player, so I can't hear any imperfections. However, what I hear is a beautiful vibrant violin tone. Even if this is not Rabin at his best, this is still solid violin playing...I like to add, his playing here is more emotional than some other recordings he recorded, when he was so called in perfect form.
Thing is, regarding Heifetz, I've heard computers play with more emotion than he does. Sure he doesn't make mistakes, but that doesn't mean I actually would want to go to one of his concerts...
@@gunfumaster1024 I would qualify that statement. Heifetz could play with tremendous emotion, but he was very inconsistent in that regard. If you don't believe me, just listen to his Decca recordings, especially the ones with Bing Crosby. It's his most emotional and inspired playing, but is rarely heard nowadays.
i don't agree with the criticisms here of pointing out some subpar playing. i'm a Rabin fan, but i wasn't too crazy about this performance, either. besides the technical bobbles, i don't like the way he plays it, artistically. Galamian considered him his best student ever, even above Perlman, Zukerman, etc., so his bar was set very high. however, i'm the first to acknowledge he's human, he had unique psychological issues, including fears of falling off the stage. so who knows what his physical and mental state was during this performance.
i was just reading the Rabin biography. 1962 was when he hit major issues with overdoing prescription drugs, which severely affected his playing. that would explain the sloppy playing here, at least relative to his stature as one of the world's greatest technicians.
Chuck Cornelius I think people are upset he missed like 3 notes instead of 0. I would like to see these critics post a video playing 1 page of this piece..
I agree that the playing is surprisingly messy for Rabin, who is usually flawless. Also, they made some strange cuts in the third movement, like at 19:11.
Can be obtained on CD-R from www.podium-wendel.de/cds.html Has to be said, though, this was not Rabin's finest hour, which is probably why it has never been issued commercially
