I was there, it was even better live.
Early 70's Fairport Convention was absolutely fantastic. The drumming is just super and the telecaster just kills it.
Peggy's no slouch on the bass, either!
is right
lukeG503 Studios! ye he's some player!
And a lovely sound from the Fender Dual Showman Reverb amplifiers!
this clip always makes me smile - swarb's energy is infectious! fantastic as always from the best band
Dave Swarbrick’s vocals were quality.
Fairport Convention is an impressive band, especially between 1971 and 1976. Excellent musicians, great songs, the environment and the peace that flowed there. Feeling, taste, joy, peace, everything related to the natural ....... that is Fairport Convention expressed with music.
Brilliant many memories of my time at Liverpool Uni and visits to Toad Hall.
Was there when this happened....!
Word went round the college and by lunchtime there was no-one there.
The colours on this video are wonderful.
We were sitting in the Students Union bar at Edge Hill when news filtered through [no mobiles in those days, possibly 3 eyed raven?!] that Fairport and Steeleye were strangely playing in the dunes 10 miles away! No idea how we managed to get there, but it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
R.I.P. Dave Swarbrick who died 2/6/2016. Aged 75.
I saw this version of Fairport Convention at Winterland. They opened for King Crimson. I never stayed to see the headliner. They were that good!
This totally rocks.Imagine being there! Can't understand why most of the people sitting near the stage aren't DANCING!! If I were there, I'd be getting my groove on!
Fairport .... such a great and under appreciated band.
They all look so young!!
Great relic, thanks!
RIP swarb keep fiddlin where ever you maybe
Wonderful stuff. DM and Peggy are a superb rhythm section. I love Swarb's vocals on some songs, he sounds (and looks!) like a singing cockney spiv. Simon's verse shows how reticent and tentative a singer he was in those days, you wouldn't believe it is the same person who sings today, if you hear him singing "Who knows where the time goes" for example, his voice has matured and mellowed like a fine wine.
Everyone knows Swarb were Brum mate. Cockney!?
Thank you sirpatrickspens for these videos.
Saw them only yesterday in new brighton floral hall and during the show peggy made reference to this video popping up on youtube .
two of my favourite bands on the same stage, on the same day and jamming together afterwards? i have watched these clips lots of times and will watch them many more.thank you so much sirpatrickspens.
This is so good; I haven't heard this one.
Great band / great music. By the way, my beautiful niece Anathea was born on this day in Colorado.
swarb has some mighty side burns in this... excellent
fantastic band and music cant get over how well behave every one is no drunks and dins falling about good days
+patrick lennon And no feckin' mosh pit.
+Michael Igoe mosh pits ????????
***** Jesus , Patrick , how old are you :)
now that, is live entertainment... God im jealous... i was much too young to have seen this...
Love everything about the drumming especially from 5:25
Simon Nicol’s solos are really excellent. I think RT leaving FC gave him a chance to shine.
Dave Swarbrick rules
Am loving everything about this perfromance. The waggy dog at 1:03 is a nice bonus...
richard thompson, cheers cheers
Richard Thompson isn't in this lineup. This is the Angel Delight album lineup, the first after Thompson left the band.
i know, i'm simply quoting simon nicol when he's telling the crowd who wrote the song.
the album before angel delight, full house, is my fav. thanks again for this post ,two of folk rock's finest bands at or around their best,
cheers- cheers
Oops, yes of course you were; sorry.
Oh for a time machine. Please! Let me out of these times!
You and me both.
I was there first time round, although not at this particular gig. Theye were fantastic live, could have you dancing like a dervish one minute then feeling tearful at one of their beautiful ballads, or going on a trip when they stretched out and jammed.
Of course Richard Thompson and the incomparable Sandy had already moved on, but there was so much spontaneous talent in the band and they were having such a good time they just rolled with it. Dave Mattacks on drums and the irrepressible Dave Swarbrick leading from the front made everyone look good. With Dave Pegg on bass and mandolin, cuing the solo spots must have been tricky. Take it away, Dave!
Great tune. The video is about 1/4 second behind the audio but just a quibble.
Pretty good Simon considering you passed out behind the amps after the last song lol
Haveing seen Fairport only last week, it's doubly sad as both Simon and Peggy are still in the band and playing well with the current lineup of Ric and Chris, if not quite with Swarb's level of attack.
Does swarbrick ever give that Skyrim character vibe
Harold Steptoe?
Peggy what is that outfit??
Is this Fairport/Span footage available on DVD anywhere?
Not that I know of.
how dare they put rock into folk! if not for people like fairport and eliza i would never have bothered listening to folk.
Braw!
Ngiyax: this was all filmed by aliens! As soon as they got back to Alpha Centauri they posted the videos on youtube - space travel is a slow business...
What exactly are these "Ainsdale Beach Tapes"? You've posted several videos of Fairport in one of their best lineups, all obviously recorded at the same venue, but I'd like to know more about them, please? Where are they coming from? Who recorded them?
All I know is that it was recorded (and I assume broadcast) by Granada TV.
