    Best feeling is, if you really flick it, that a medium heavy boilie (not additionally put water on to avoid the boilies getting destroyed in the air) has a nice down-and-then-up-curve in the air due to the backspin.

    Hi Matt I have seen most if not all of your youtube videos and on a very few occasions i don't agree with some things you say but if we were all the same life would be boring. I can't fault you on your delivery and presentation, you explain things so well and its good to see someone putting useful basic information out there on carp fishing, keep up the good work mate.

      Hi Mark, thanks again for commenting and your support. We experience carp fishing individually and even if we all fished the same water we’d experience it differently and have different takes on what we experience. What’s interesting about my job is that I get to see in real time how anglers from all walks of life experience the same lake. It gives me the opportunity to learn more which is always fun. All the best, Matt.

    Throwing sticks are not easy to use but I’m so glad that I put the effort into mastering them many years ago. No more sore knuckles, no more broken catapult elastics. I use them a lot when I’m baiting and they’re much more discreet than spodding.

      You covered this subject very well Matt, your explanation on backspin and friction with the stick was spot on. Just a couple of additions; after extended use the inner wall of the stick will build up a residue of boilie mix which will at first and for quite a long time thereafter allow the angler to increase backspin over normal operation and gain extra distance however eventually the build up becomes a hindrance and the stick has to be cleaned. Experienced users can learn to skim baits at a lower trajectory making it more difficult for the seagulls after throwing a diversionary one or two up in the air for them of course.
      When fishing Aquatels in the 70’s I needed to get the new fan-dangled hush hush boilies to an island margin at 100yds, first option was to “borrow” the rowing boats from the boating lake (which tactic worked superbly ;D ) but once they were chained up I had a problem! Thankfully my brother then qualified as an electrician and he suggested I use 22mm electrical conduit and by using a bending spring and a wine cork rammed in the end I managed to make a throwing stick, which worked really well with the heavy boilies we were using which were only boiled for a minute to form a hard skin on what were predominantly paste baits!

    • @matthewcollinsangler
      @matthewcollinsangler  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mark, thanks as always for your support. Interesting to hear about your experience. I must admit I’ve not noticed any boilie mix build up on any of my sticks (some of which I’ve had for a very long time) maybe it’s the types of bait I use and the fact that I air dry them well before I use them? I forgot to mention the low trajectory skimming method but it’s something I’m familiar with. You can sometimes throw the birds off by actually skipping a bait off the surface and they go for the first ripple rather than where the bait actually lands. TBH there are normally too many fairly quickly so this edge disappears fast!
      Fair play that you actually made your own throwing stick! Respect sir. I’m surprised they didn't explode at that range with such thin skin. When I rolled my own I used to boil 24mm baits for up to 4 minutes to make them super tough and easy to stick out at range. I was cooking up 2kg at a time so the water temperature dropped considerably which added to the cooking time.

      @@matthewcollinsangler We used low grade mixes in the seventies with quite a bit of semolina and calcium carbonate in them which made the bait skins quite rubbery yet leaked flavour very quickly, it probably went a long way to stop the boilies splitting. I certainly never air dried my baits back then, just defrosted them the night before in a bag made from an old pub bar mat folded in half to soak up the moisture. The build up in the sticks is mostly caused by using defrosted bird food based base mixes for high leakage mixes without air drying. Old dog old tricks I guess ;). Ps. Yes the Mrs certainly used to get rather testy with me monopolising the kitchen for several hours rolling baits in the old days (sadly consigned to the garage these days after a nasty spillage with some Nutrabaits Squid and Octopus flavouring in the mid 80’s).

      @matthewcollinsangler  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dafarsher9738 Right! That would explain the build-up problem then. I’m not surprised you got kicked out the kitchen lol. I can’t think of anything worse than squid and octopus flavour in the kitchen! Our bait kitchen is in our basement garage and my wife helps me roll our home rolled bait. We roll less nowadays as we are buying in the Nash Scopex Squid for customers, but I still enjoy making my own.

      Hi Phillip, thanks again for your support. Actually that’s a miss on my part. I should have covered multiple baits. At short to medium range it’s totally possible to put three or four baits into the stick. I always start with one to get my range then double up to see how that goes, and go to three if range allows. I draw the line at four baits. Beyond that you’re spraying boilies all over the lake. Cheers, Matt.

    Great video Matt. I have the small Nash stick which is brilliant, I also have the Korda stick. I recently bought the Ridge Monkey Carbon Fibre model and can not throw with it! Have had many of my friends try this stick also, it is extremely difficult to generate any distance with it. Wish I had the option to try before I buy, this was an expensive stick and its a good point that you raise that if you can get a hold of a stick first it would really help.

    • @matthewcollinsangler
      @matthewcollinsangler  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mick, yeah it's a classic the old Nash Cobra stick. Wow, sorry to hear that you have buyer’s regret with the Ridgemonkey stick. I came very close to buying one myself but I found that weight wise they were nearly as heavy as traditional plastic sticks so I changed my plans. Sounds like I had a lucky escape! My large diameter carbon stick is made by Daiwa. It’s OK but not as long as I’d hoped. The finish is poor which was disappointing for an expensive stick and the cap on the handle is rubbish. It kept falling out so I had to duct tape it in place!

    • @matthewcollinsangler

      Hi mate, the smallest stick I own is a 20mm, I’m not aware of any brand doing a smaller stick. I’ve used mine for 15s and 18s, and it works fine. I’ve never tried 12s but I suspect the problem you’re going to have is with multiple baits jamming and poor accuracy. 12mm baits just aren’t designed for use with a throwing stick, instead I’d spod them.

      @@matthewcollinsangler Enjoying your videos mate keep them up.
      Im currently fishing a 4ft crystal clear lake where most people catapult/spomb boolies into holes in the weed. I noticed that this style would only produce one bite a night 90% of the time. I came to the conclusion that it was the way people were baiting up after the first bite, and that was spooking other fish in the area. Just simply skipping my baits along the surface to these areas I have quadrupled the catch rate through the night period.
      I don't mean to trumpet blow it is just the best way to explain how I came to that conclusion.

      Hi, it's not a good idea really. It won't be very accurate and you'll be limited to putting out one bait at a time otherwise smaller baits will jam up if you try and do 3 at a time. I use a 20mm stick for 15 to 18mm and a 26mm stick for 24mm. Matt.

    Hi matt, I've been trying to incorporate a throwing stick in my fishing but I'm finding my baits just seem to skim across the surface. Is this because I'm letting it go too close to the water?

    • @matthewcollinsangler
      @matthewcollinsangler  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi mate, yes, they do take some mastering. Basically yes you are stopping the stick too late. For max distance I actually aim low but I hit the stick so hard that the baits skim the surface and then rise up before finally dropping but this technique is quite advanced. Try aiming higher and stopping the stick earlier. This will change the launch angle of the bait and get them out to where you need them. Focus on mastering short range with little flicks of the stick at first and then build your distance. Consistent practice is key so stick (excuse the pun) with it!

      Hi Rob, yes gulls can be a nightmare on some waters. As I mentioned towards the end of the video, if you’re doing a big session, the only way I’ve found to beat the gulls is to bait up at night. Not easy I know but it’s a great way of discreetly getting some bait out in the zone without losing most of it to the gulls. Hope that helps, cheers, Matt.

      Hi Lee, thanks for your question. I would advise you to get a short stick like the Nash 20mm midi throwing stick (T0703). I started off with the Korda eazi stick and I hated it and wrote throwing sticks off completely until I tried a shorter stick. A short stick is always useful and great for 40 yard range. Once you've mastered that you can get a longer version (T0702) of the same stick which will make the transition easier. Sorry, but I would never advise starting off with a long throwing stick. Cheers, Matt.
