We can all agree that is is actually really economically and environmentally friendly to take advantage of this.

Except most stores lock up the bins or the area where the bins are and to deter even further they even "throw away" corrosive chemicals to top off the daily haul when closing shop. Never mind the fact that most developed countries don't get power outages even remotely frequently enough to make this a reasonable way to spend time.

i live in canada and work in a small family owned grocery store. we had a 3 day blackout a few months ago. as soon as we knew we had to throw food away we made a post on Facebook announcing that we would be rolling out shopping carts full of free, still edible, food. it was actually quite emotional because we knew that the pl who showed up really needed the food. new of this reached Canada s prime minister and he decided to pay us a visit a few days later. it was a real honor to know that what we had done got noticed on such a level. we had turned a crisis situation into something positive and I am so glad we did what we did. Ty for reading have a nice day everyone :-)

Little tip for dumpster diving, leave sealed margarine alone unless its winter, if the package gets too warm it separates and you basically get D grade vegetable oil with corn syrup and milk solids floating in it. Just go ahead and spend the $2 on it inside the store. And if the dumpster is locked or behind a gate, be sure and sneaky about it, because if caught its a for sure trespassing charge and your boss will ask why you, a security guard just got a trespassing charge at the place you're supposed to be guarding on the weekends

elv8 up he talks about this problem in the video, lawsuits, even poor people are willing to get a lawyer to really milk the situation and make a lot of money to get out of poverty, and lawyers are willing to do it because they know the poor person has now power if it doesn’t work out. But if you go dumpster diving for it, what are you gonna do, sue the store because *you* went dumpster diving for possibly unsanitary food.

Hadn't realized it then, but seeing your video, I guess they were about to trash some food.
I started binging your channel a couple of days ago, but I'm really impressed by this video; the waste supermarkets and companies are doing is ridiculous and awful for the planet, not even counting for people in need.
I was mad seeing so many products, especially those already coming from animal slavery and torture, such as this ton of meat and dairies, in the trash. Again, great video and action! Sincerely inspiring

Probably different in Australia, but when I worked in a grocery store, we had backup diesel generators and enough fuel that could refrigerate everything for up to 48 hours.
All of the damaged / slightly out of date foods were taken to a homeless shelter every twice a week. Volunteers would be the ones to sort out anything potentially dangerous.
Only thing that was ever thrown out was customer returns.

Here in France you can go in jail for that, up to 7 years and a 100000€ fine if you've done it at night "breaking in".
And if you're not caught, you have the possibility that supermarkets thrown bleach or laundry detergent on those food dumpsters to prevent poor or homeless people eating it.
But their official version is to prevent food poisoning cases.

This is a great idea. However, some stores have an official policy (which may or may not be enforced by all locations) of slicing/puncturing chucked-out items to discourage this kind of behavior. Costco even compacts all of their perishable garbage, so there's no finding ANYTHING in mint condition out behind the store. I used to work at Costco, and although they did make token efforts at donating food they did not believe they would be able to sell (that was still within its best-by date), we threw out tonnes of food every week that was perfectly fine...not just edible, but of high quality (less than 1% of unsold food was donated). I once chucked more than 100 bunches of bananas, 70 plastic containers of blackberries, and 30 5 kg bags of apples into the compactor in less than an hour, and that was fairly unremarkable (I remember this day because of the large quantities of a few specific items, but in aggregate, this was an everyday occurance, just with more variety). They do this because while there is certainly liability for keeping it on the shelf with no refrigeration, there is also liability for leaving it in a place where people can just...grab it and take it home.
The worst part was that it was still stealing if a certain staff member might have indulged in some of this perfectly good food. Some of their agreements with vendors contain clauses that leave them open for reimbursement if they aren't able to move all of the product, so they keep track of exactly how much of everything they're chucking, and because lying to the vendors about how much of it was unsold and destroyed (vs. unsold and not destroyed...stolen or given away) could get them in trouble, we weren't allowed to partake.
So basically, I'm not sure exactly how many stores you will find who won't deliberately destroy this food. And it's a damned shame because if there was a mechanism to distribute food like that, the overall resources needed to support humanity would be lower. Wasting food is unethical, but companies don't really give much of a crap about that now, do they?

    • @VoIcanoman
      @VoIcanoman ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@joavelli Hate to break it to you but legal systems differ...depending on where you live (I know, wild concept!). And where I live, doing something with the knowledge that someone could get hurt is just opening yourself up to accusations that some person's food poisoning was due to the food that you left out, unrefrigerated, for people to take home. It may or may not be provable in a court, *but because even winning a lawsuit will set you back tens of thousands of dollars,* companies will not take the chance.
Heck, even food banks here (which distribute free food to people who can't afford it) have extremely strict standards for what can be given away. I have volunteered at one such local organization for several years now, and *I know for a fact that if an item's "best before" date is past, they will chuck it out.* They have no profit motive, and certainly aren't evil. But they are very worried about getting sued if one time, something they've given away, leads to an illness...or if their practise of giving away expired food could lead to accusations that they caused someone's illness (the difference here is meaningless...either way they're getting sued, and win or lose, they're losing a lot of money).

Local food closet here _can't_ get donations from Costco because you *must* have an insured truck / dedicated driver _and_ you *must* take ALL or nothing...meaning if you get a truckload (big store, after all) a nonprofit volunteer organization now has a timely distribution / limited freezers / storage / expensive truck / composting-isn't-free problem.
