This is literally one of the best photo editing tutorials out there!!! I love it!
you are an amazing teacher FYI ! been watching a lot of people but you know exactly what you are doing!
Borze szumiący, zawsze jestem TAKA DUMNA, gdy znajduje tak zajebiste kanały i okazuje się, że należą one do Polaków!💕
haha how you feel about frequency separation is how I felt about Dodge & Burn! too complicated! But your video actually made it seem way easier, even actually easier than frequency separation.....and I was actually already doing a lot of the same things in a more roundabout way. So thank you very much for this! :)
yaaay! thats so good to hear! and yeah I'm still making attempts at using frequency separation, i mean I'm really trying to like it hahahaha maybe one day :D
Had to watch this twice great tutorial. Thank you for explaining why you are doing what you are doing.
You're so down to earth - pleasure to watch you and listen to you. And thanks for a very informative and good tutorial!
That was a great video tutorial, Anita! Thanks for sharing. I love the pace of your video and how clearly you explain everything. You are a natural teacher. :-)
ahhh so glad you think so, thank you!!
Hello Anita you have helped me a much more than you think you did! I've learnt your techniques and become better and better at skin retouching! Thank you so much that you shared your photoshop techniques to us!!! Also I love the way you explain everything as easy as you can like a teacher! I love your videos you are the best female photographer retoucher! 😍
wow. best Dodge and burn tutorial I've ever seen!
yaaaay!
Thank you much! You are the n'est teacher!!!
The best channel on youtube.
wow thank you :D
Thank you! I always found the tutorials too complicated and used FS. But my goal for the coming year is to be able to use D&B too and now your video makes it so clear!
Love love love this video! Very easy to follow. Thanks for the tutorial!
Liv E really glad you like it, thanks for watching!
Very very nice. I knew dodge and burn were powerful but I never used it for the skin. Only shadows and highlights. I have to try this now! Thanks for sharing.
oh great, hope it works nicely for you!
So glad I came across your channel, your videos are awesome!
thank you!!
Wow!!! This is th best dodge and burn video I've watched so far. Thanks. Am a wedding photographer, most times I come back home after a successful wedding with tons of pictures. Pls can show me how to create a dodge and burn action to help fasten my workflow . Thanks in advance
LEONARD OBIORA it's a tricky one, there isn't really a shortcut for dodging and burning I'm afraid! You can create actions so you don't have to create layers each times but there isn't really a quick solution (that I know of anyway) :( using highlight/shadows curves could be a good substitute though!
wow! thanks for your response. I will really appreciate if you cab make a tutorial on Shadow and highlight curve. thanks so much
outsource your editing to a retoucher ;)
You can save yourself so much time and can just shoot!
That's why we exist as a Retoucher
Thank you so much you make it easy by explaining exactly what to do.
Mark Harbin you're very welcome, thanks for watching!
This is the best tutorial!!!! Learned so much :)
Thank you so much for this! Your makeup is sooooo good btw!!

Please continue creating great content
thank you! so glad you like it.
I could never get this to click, as to when to do it and where. I've watched countless videos from Lynda to facebook groups...and this is the only video that I understood what and more importantly where I am supposed to use this tool. Thank you so much! My work is already on the next level just from this simple video.
Excellent... simple & subtle approach :)
thank you :)
Amazing (as usual)........thanks!
thank you!! and you're welcome :)

I love these tutorials!! Seeing your work flow is such a huge help when editing and practicing with my own photos.
Thank you for sharing this tutorial! It really helped me understand the procedure.
I got one question.. When I was brushing the whites over the dark eye bags ( and because they are very dark I have to go over again a few times ) it looks very yellowish / glowy? How do I prevent this ?
Do you use a healing brush before or after sorting the colours for this technique of retouching?
LOVELY ! Very informative, thank you !
thanks, glad you like it!
Thanks for the tips very informative
Great work , very helpful for beginners , one's again thanks alot 😉

Awesome! Thank you so much.
I love you. For showing us the true method with grey layer without FS. Thanks a ton. Give us more tutorial on textures, global dodge n burn and local adjustments. Thanks thanks thanks
I prefer your method over frequency separation thank you so much for this video.
thanks again for a great video. maybe you could explain what happens exactly with the contrast, curves and color layer. like how do you know wich color to adjust to get the skin more yellow and know the differences between the neutral colors and other colors. hopefully I explained right. thanks again. thumbs up!
sure, could do that! thanks for suggestions :)
YOUR SO AWESOME!!!!
ahhh thanks so much
Amazing,Darling! I Want to see more like that about 7minutes...Thank you for sharing!
Nice one. I have to try your dodge&burn lesion on my images. I use FS for fixing skin but I like result what you done on your images. Great Anita.
thank you! definitely, let me know how it went!
It real working very well. I have not try it on close headshoot but I done portrait with a natural light and it was great technique real works very well. Thank you Anita for sharing your technique with us. I hope meet you one day and push your hand. Cheers

thats absolutely helpful but what about skin final rotouch or filter ?? i went with all the steps and i did right but my skin still not soften or filtered
Dziekuję. Próbuję kombinować z różnymi technikami retuszu skóry. Twój mi się podoba. Czy masz jakiś sposób na stonowanie świecącej skóry na czole i nosie?
Thank you ! Very Amazing video and your channel is very fashion!! Hallo from Germany
thanks so much!
thank you so much..♥
thanks ani
Hi Anita can you upload any unretouched pictures so we can try this out? thank you for your work
Is it overkill to use Frequency Separation on the skin as well or is it just a preference to use either or?
Nice tutorial, is not better using a layer for dodging and another for burning ?
Oh and for the FS is not complicated at all. It's more easier with Affinity Photo ;)
Oh and you are the first person I see making that with a trackpad :D
świetny tutorial!!! czy można sie z Panią skontaktować jakos ?
mozna :) na przyklad przez moja strone anitasadowska.com
Thank you so much Anita! This is def going in my saved files. I love how clearly you explained it and I love the black and white layer to guide you as a beginner. I've been a big Lightroom only users for a long
Time and only using dodge and burn tools in photoshop. This creating a layer thing helps a lot more in not making it so intense!
Just curious, why did you makes a dodge and burn layer then you did a highlights and shadow one instead of combining them all together?
Also I found when I did it, it made it too soft looking as well. Do you end up doing s sharpen tool after sometimes?
Thanks again!
hey! thanks so much that means a lot :)
i usually do separate layers when i know there is loads to dodge and burn so i can have more control over each part of the process. usually though i combine the two in one layer :)
and yes, i always sharpen my images at the very end :)
Nice :)
I have been using Frequency separation for 2 years now, and i never really understood how Dodge and burn worked.. well now i do! :)
One question, at 11:40, could you just use a 50% brush to remove the burn from the D&B layer erectly? instead of using a Layer mask?
Thanks!
Hi Billy! i just tried it there and yes, you can. you just have to try and find a grey that's exactly in the middle between black and white :)
Thank you :)
Waoouu !!! Really Nice , thank u !!
thanks, glad you like it!
Whoa, your hair was blonde..... nice!
Thank you.
Loved this shoot. Colors were amazing!! What is your process of exporting through photoshop. I know its very basic question but sometime my photos look duller when I export them! xx
Edelle Kenny thank you darling! I always export through lightroom actually so not sure i know how to help :(
Oh thats what I usually do so glad to hear that is a way other people are doing too! Thanks! x
Edelle Kenny what Johnny said :D I think the only downside to Lightroom is that you can never get this same sharpness as when exporting straight from PS, that's how I feel anyway.
Edelle Kenny How do you have colour management set up? You need to set up colour management in Photoshop and for a consistent look across your computer in different applications it's generally best to work in sRGB. You can set up Photoshop to automatically convert images to your working colour model (sRGB) as they open up if they are embedded with a different colour profile to begin with. For example, your images may have a camera colour profile embedded or another colour model such as Adobe RGB. If you work in the Adobe RGB colour space and then view the image in an sRGB environment the image will look odd and colours all wrong.
blackjohnny0 It's all about colour management settings in your photo editing software. If you set up sRGB as your colour working space and make sure images are automatically converted to your colour working space upon opening/importing/pasting (if originally different to your colour working space) then images should look the same in all applications, including FB, browsers and photo viewers. PNG has nothing to do with this. Jpegs on my PC look identical in Photoshop, Corel Photo-PAINT, Canon Digital Professional, Lightroom, Instagram, FB etc. All non-colour-managed applications assume sRGB. If you worked in an Adobe RGB working space in Photoshop the rgb colour values will have a different appearance in a non-colour managed environment. Browsers and other non-colour managed applications will ignore any embedded Adobe RGB profile.
thank you ♥
you're welcome :)
Good job
thank you :)
Hi Anita, your work is amazing. May I ask what strobe lights you use for your photography? And any brand you may recommend? Also what watts you would recommend for fashion photography. Thanks so much, I'm so inspired by your work!
hey! I've used the cheapest strobes for ages. now I'm using bowens and they are nice, faster sync and so on but if you're on a budget you could totally make it work with less expensive stuff like Quantuum. id recommend the 600w lights as the 300 are quite weak.
Do you also fix the hair fly aways? thanks for the tutorial : ) and i noticed you dont use a mouse? some people really recommend the Wacom Tablet.
sometimes, depends on the shot. yes, loads of people do, i just can't get used to it for some reason
Hi Anita, I saw the dodging but not the burning. You coloured over the highlights but never brought out the shadows, or am I missing something. Thanks in advance very good video
Very nice
thanks :)
i followed your steps, and the dark areas around the eyes/skin that i brushed over became more white and did not match the rest of the face color. what am i doing wrong? the photo was taken outdoors on a sunny day if that makes a difference... Thank you for your time
was the skin light and shadows very dark? if you try and lighten shadows that are very deep its going to happen.
Thank you!
colovada colovada you're very welcome :)
thanks for a detailed video, but i think you should have mentioned clearly when you switch from white brush to black brush to ease understanding newbies like me. You can still do this i think in youtube annotations perhaps.
thanks for pointing that out! will keep that in mind for my future videos :)
How To Get Film Poster Skin Retouch Effect Upload Some Tutorial ??? Please
You're fantastic in retouching. Though I would love to see a retouch video of some really really bad skin. Like 16 year old skin full of puberty. Would it be possible to get that to this level?
Mahym I was thinking of that. Just need to find a willing subject!
You are beautiful and amazing thank you. x
lol thank you :)
'pin eck!… excellent work!
jetblakink thank you! Glad you like it!
Hello, congrats... Very efficient post... Thank you for sharing this :o)
Ok there is something i am not getting, you created a layer and called it D and B, then used a white brush, then you created another layer , same options, used a white brush but called it Highlights and shadows....so when you paint on both you are adding dodging /highlighting basically?? the two layers are the exact same. what am i missing here?I do not see you burning/darkening, only dodging/brightening....so why 2 layers same options.? thanks
Thank u!
you're very welcome :)
and how to go from highlighting to shadowing?
🤩👍
I love your videos! Where do you live?
thank you :) I'm based in Ireland :)
how long did it take you to become an professional, you are still very young?
quatie it's hard to say exactly. I Mage a video on it, check it out. In general tho I started in 2008 ( 16 at the time) and my first proper client was 2012. It was very slow then and it really only kicked off properly in the last year or two (where I can actually support myself of what i do)
Hope that helps!
how did you do the shadow thing?? T_T
Elina Abdrakhmanova what do you mean? :D
Hi dear! I love your videos and this is really the best one regarding dodge and burn. Thanks a lot for sharing! Could you do a tutorial please how to achieve this dark and glossy skin tone like on Vivaluxury blog? Somehow it ends up to look not very clean when I try. Thanks so much!
thank you so much! i think she starts with being very tanned and has nice, shimmery makeup to be honest! it would be very hard to achieve on somebody who's very pale!
Rozjasnienia bialym a przyciemnienia (burn) ciemnym?
tak, zgadza sie :)
I feel like I’m doing something wrong. Every time I try to paint over in white to fix blemishes it just turns out with white all over her face 🙄
Thx very much for sharing this method, by far the easiest way to retouch skin naturally !! (I don't like the look of the split frequency...)
Your explanation and tips are very useful, keep up the good work :)
Do you have an instagram account ?
@++:)
Julien
Wow! Thanks! Looks like a Christian Dior photo .
