Unfortunately, so many patches have been made the guides have some suboptimal suggestions. In particular as Couronne and Von Calstiens I've tired to follow his guide and it keeps going off script.
Lengend has said many times that this is not a beginner channel, tbh in this video, the guy played this campaign very bad it's irrelevant what faction he is playing. I'm not trying to say that all player can do well as a beginner,but in this case, this guy should get more experience on the game before taking any advice, because in this game, you need to make judgement calls all the time, and that is hard to give a general advice.
@@TechbotALPHA A good number of the faction specific traits are straight up bad. There's the obvious ones like Norsca and non-influence High Elves ones that are strictly negative, but theres also ones like Sharp Teeth and Sharp Claws which are Skaven specific traits that are just worse versions of the generic Weapon Master and Aggressive traits iirc.

My blood knight lord and two more full skeleton spam stacks defeated Volkmar and franz today - hard battel but winds of death and proper envelopment won the day (along with some heals, some crypt horrors and the great danse macabre
@@henrymonroe4300 just take the ladies and have them take out whatever. Izzy and 4 vampires can take out 4 chaos armies at once with almost no casualties. Just drop them on the hell canon, everyone blobs, unleash spells. The end.
To save that someone two hours, here's a quick 6 point summary: -Keep your vampire guy alive. He literally is the thing holding your army together -Find the coolest looking things in your roster and build them -Throw them both at the enemy -Use heal/Invocation of Nehek -Rinse and repeat until they run away or die -Use their corpses to make new army (in campaign)
I'm just picturing Franz thinking that he's about to wipe out the vampire menace once and for all, spirits are high within the empire then suddenly Legend takes control and dashes the hopes of man
Grave Guard and knights stack works really well on Blood Dragon lord because their skill tree give huge upkeep discount. Other lords for VC is pretty much heroes and skelly spam.
2:12 frederick Vanhal is bad ass minor character in the book black plague. He was a priest of morr that becomes a master necromancer. I love the little easter eggs the devs add in this game.

1:15:00 Skaven in Tabletop can flee at the speed of Cavalry: Non-Cavalry rolls 2D6 for moving when routing Cavalry rolls 3D6 Skaven Infantry rolls 3D6 as well They simulated it in TW:WH 2 by giving them those two Morale based abilities - one for above 50%, one for below 50%.
On the battle occurring around 25:00 : With Vlad specifically, you can avoid the ammo wasting timesink by just rushing in your flying units whilst vanguard deploying your whole army. I find that this works so well that the Empire can't get any shots off and frequently finish the battle with no kills on their missile units and artillery. Bats are great throwaway units that can stop missiles from firing whilst the rest of your army closes in and they work particularly well with Vargheists and Warhounds. Use the bats to pin missile units and artillery in place/prevent firing, then follow up with Vargheists or Warhounds. The hounds kill such things faster (except against Dwarfs), whilst the Vargheists have better manoeuvrability and can get into retreated skirmish mode missile units faster. Watch out for heavy cavalry and heavy infantry - they will ruin your grounded flyers. If possible, use zombie summons to stop those threats, or throw bats at the problem and try to get away once you've cleared all missile units out. And by the way, ammo wasting on this battle ends at 27:28
When you blob up your skeletons, I'm just imagining the necromancers in your army weaving them into a moving wall of grasping bones. It's already unnerving to fight a skeleton, but to see man's mortal form twisted even further by foul magic would cause nearly any soldier to rout.
this shit here is ones of the reasons i like the mod "Old-World Rites", it gives a rites for vampires called the "Lahmian-Rite" which basically gives you a diplomatic bonus with every empire factions, and raise vampiric-corruption in every faction's regions you have trading pacts it can completely change how you play the vampires, and let you actually play them as mannipulatives assholes who turns the empire against itself you know, like you're actually... corrupting them? it also a great-way to avoid being at war with 15 differents factions right from the beginning
Skeletons, Vargheists and The Wind of Death. The three tenants of the vampire counts. Extra points for running around with Vlad and Isabella together, a stack of skeletons for him and a stack of vargheists/vampire heroes for her.
BTW notice in this vid how war wagon mortars have much greater accuracy than standard ones, they do a lot more damage because of it. Hidden stats can vastly affect unit performance. A lot of people dismiss them without realising they are a massive improvement.
I find when the Skaven AI has a weak missile unit that you can't catch in melee, I just sit out their ammo with some fodder. You had skelechaff to spear, so send one unit as obvious missile bait to him and just wait it out. He'll come into melee when he's out of ammo.
"We don't wanna deal with Skaven Ambushes..." That made me get flashbacks from my last Von Carstein campain. No idea how many turns I was trying to exterminate Throt the Unclean..
Suggestion: A video on "pre-battle analysis". Maybe a couple of examples in a row, no need to see the battles. Having a good battle strategy starts with taking the enemy strength and weaknesses in consideration. Maybe some new players might struggle a bit with this part.
Just got me thinking about unique hero traits for Skaven, googled and found out that Skaven lords/heros have only one unique trait: * Brutally Honest ~ "That's abject nonsense and you knew it!" Of all the unique traits for Skaven, "honesty" would be the last one I'd have guessed. :D
I'm impressed when I seriously tried to get the vampire achievement in wh2 I usually barely reached triple digits getting to 130 is pretty nice Imo one thing you should do as vamps is send 2 or 3 armies straight for Altdorf in raid stance to destroy them before they start confederating like crazy and with the dwarfs... well, good luck, just hope they don't have enough resources to actually attack you with serious armies
Interesting, have tried Vampire Counts a couple of times but struggle a little at the start because of how weak skeletons are. Turns out Vampire's are all about that magic. Might have to give them another go.
If I see this kind of armies I wish CA would implement an upkeep reduction system for this units maybe based on the vampiric corruption where the local army is (then it could be more worth it to recruit this units on upper difficulties).After that the vampire counts are perfected as a faction.
That would be a great idea... using huge skeleton armies to overrun the enemies territory and then using the real and more powerful vampires to reinforce it would be a great way to play and also make sense lorewise...
That campaign looked like my legendary Isabella Von Carstain campaign. I got declared on by the Dwarfs really early on and managed to take out that faction, only to then have almost all the Empire factions declare, then the other Dwarf factions. I ended up in a postition where I could defend Sylvania (in one turn 4 Empire stacks attacked 2.5 stacks of mine, 3 of the Empire stacks were lead by legendary lords, and managed to kill all the lords and win the battle) but I couldn't manage to move out.
It is my campaign. I am not so bad at this game, but more of a TW Rome 2 player. It is completely different when you play a vamp faction. I can play Rome 2 on legendary... with one specific Rome fraction, but I CAN and without cheese... mostly. Why it took me 140 turns to get 2 provinces? Because I have looted and razed every settlement west with Reikland included. My plan is to keep 3-5 provinces and loot every human settlement around. I see my mistakes and will learn from them. Thanks for showing me how to play and what was wrong, much appreciated.
Just hearing a comment you made about Arcane conduit reminded me of when I was first learning the game. I honestly Didn't know how the spell and mana system worked at all. Like, I did full campaigns without ever really using any magic because even reading the tooltips and understanding what it was trying to communicate was difficult as someone new. Not sure if this kind of content is something you're interested in anymore, but a Magic 101, explaining how to understand the spell system, the strength of different schools, how conduits work and how/what increases/effects your regen rate or total capacity.
For people who don't like skeleton spam, but want a smooth campaign what you can do is, simply make a random lord, at each city you have. Like a Vampiric Guard regement. Then when you do goto war, or order tide trys to run in, you can rally all your guards to defend and overwhelm them. You'll easyily be able to aford 2 - 3 expensive army's along with this strat. and that's without even taking over all of the empire. I personally go for the dwarfs as fast as possible because I don't want to deal with dwarfs lategame. Magic resist, arty, and unbreakable high armored elite units are a real bain to the vampire counts. They can deal with it, but its not like the empire which you can run over. I swear if they give dwarves single large monsters in Warhammer 3 they'll completely fuck over the VC
Medium campaign turn 155 and I littery got help from the empire and golden order to defeat chaos that was fun to see them clapp chaos armies die but killing half of them and then just throw 1000ths of skeletons at them to slowly thin them out

I'm glad, a year later, that we don't need Legend to do our Auto Resolve calculations for us. I know they added it in... some patch for 2, but I can't believe it took them so long to add that feature.
You could have used the vanguard deployement trait from Vlad which affects the whole army in the second battle against Boris Todbringer and rush him with all your infantry (for those people who do not want to waste the ammunition of the AI), so the mortars and hellfire cannons would also deal minor damage.
Maybe if he wanted to lose. keep in mind this is legendary difficulty you cant do yolo shit. even if you did that and won you might have to fight another battle after.

I never get Manny & co. tbh. It's too bothersome a confederation compared to taking Drakenhof on turn 3 or 4 and just wiping him out. The Bloodline lords are more than fine substitutes.
It's not completely necessary, but manfred is an absolute beast of a lord, at times he can pretty much destroy entire armies by himself, you can still take drakenhof early, you just need to then subjugate manfred to a minor province.
for Vampires the best option Start with Isabel, in the second turn you recruit Vlad And then in the third turn you take Drakenhof after that you just recruit Vampires by the 17th turn you have Doomstack Vlad + 11 Flying Vampires +1 Banche + 7 Skeletons (free) in turn 73 all Vampires must have fly mount and Hunger trait i usually take "Dread Incarnate" and "Disciplined" as the main trait They literally destroy everything in front of them
why would you put the vampires on Vlad? Izzy buffs them. Start with Vlad (faster campaign movement), get Izzy turn 1, give her the ladies, get vlad skellies and zombies and a necromancer and or wight king. Take out all templehofs, leave nothing for mannfred. Research free skellies, raise another army (or two), take out Drycha. By that time you can confederate Mannfred. By turn 70 you should have 5-6 armies anyway even on legendary, especially after getting free skellies and zombies and cutting hero upkeep by half. "Doomstacks" are pointless since they are expensive and you need to cover a lot of ground. Better to have 9 ok armies with strong lords and heroes than 2 uber imba doomstacks. + you want to have as high income as possible since VC buildings are really expensive. And just add elite units over time as economy allows and specialise (flying units for Izzy, cavalry/grave guard for blood knight VL etc. (Ghorst is super effective and fun with all zombie stack supported by something else). Get Lahmia lord and farm blood kisses. :) Lots of fun. Long live the Eternal Emperor.
@@Finwaell Vlad is tank and it is almost impossible to kill him and he is on the ground, not flying, so he has no problem with leadership basically let enemy circle Vlad use magic and then vampire charge from sky in 2 min all enemy units are dead or rooted
@@tihomirrasperic Isabella has better defense than Vlad, especially in the early game, and as Finwaell says, it would be a massive waste not to utilize Isabella´s +10 +10 buff to vampires. You can use her if you wanna use the strategy described, although I am skeptical as to how effective that is now that the AI actually dicks around with their troops instead of blobbing up around any target they can see. With Isabella, you can just send her thot squad into melee with mostly anything and they will win anyway.
@@Riwillion I understand your point I use Vlad as a tank, he holds the middle with a few skeletons of spearmen, and the Vampires are on top from all sides with magic and traits. In addition, the Vlad can attack fortified cities, this build showed me the best results and I am satisfied with how it works
I take out the hellfire by putting the Varghiest in the corner since they can vanguard deploy Only really works when ur attacking tho, the ai will take the bait and turn the artillery around and u can just flap them around to waste ammo as your infantry moves in
Ah, the Normal dfficulty where on turn 130 empire fields shieldless spears and archers, unlike Legendary where they go on you with hellstorms and stemtanks by turn 35-50 xD Luckily Vlad can take out a stem tank 1v1 by lvl 12 or so. :)
Hey Legend, so in this video you mention that you favor Skeleton spam + Lord magic / Wind of Death, but you say "you don't have to do that if you don't want". I have a couple questions that I think would relate to this "guide" video and they are: 1) What do you do to "get there" in the first place? Like before you have enough of the necromancer recruit building and the free skelly research for insta Wind of Death heroes and free army units - what kind of army should I be running up until that point? 2) If "skelly spam" is your #1 best Vampire army composition, what would you say are #2 and #3? This could be at any point in the game - anything goes (except maybe a full army of heroes). Do you see Grave Guard as being viable? Is it Terrorgheist spam? or like what are some alternatives to skelly spam that you think would be viable even if they're not "optimal"
You can get free skelly spam by turn 18 or so, until then (and honestly, even well after I would recommend) just run any infantry you get your hands on, using them as meatshield, and take out vulnerable/dangerous units with preferably 4 units of vargheists per army. As Von Carstein, you can recruit them right off the bat (haha), and they are SUPER good, even on L/VH, unlike most of the VC roster. They are very fragile, especially to missiles, but they dish out loads of damage and stagger enemies on charge, so if you use them well, you can get hundreds of kills per unit in most battles. Also I would beeline for WoD on any lord, even skipping Route Marcher probably. You really need that magic DPS as the VC.
Also, yes, terrorgheists are very good as support units for taking out strategic targets, or even as a doomstack if you can afford it. They don´t dish out anywhere near as much damage as the vargheists, but also are way more resilient and better for taking out large units. I can then also recommend the mortis engine, extremely powerful units if you use them properly, and even blood knights are ok, though not amazing on L/VH. Their stats are top-notch though, so even then they will perform alright.

One question I still have is about filler in the meantime - I understand that you can get free skeletons early, but you can't exactly get the Vampires at the level you need early on. Do you really just spam full skeleton armies without the spellcasters then? Recruit spellcaster lords and try to keep them alive? Or is skeleton spam just good enough without Wind of Death. Also, what else would you combine with the Mortis Engine? or do you just put that in with Skeletons? I don't really play on L/VH, and I don't necessarily like only using one or two single compositions my entire game, so I'm trying to get an idea of what else is supposed to work well besides just skeletons + wind of death. Like i asked originally, what would a second- and third-best composition look like for the Vampire Counts? Or do you only ever use skeletons + WoD and ignore the rest
@@itsmehawkeyeg Well, that´s complicated. The Vampire Counts have it kinda hard early on, until they get one or two proficient spellcasters that can cast some good AoE damage spells (mostly WoD). For that reason, I recommend leaning rather heavily into levelling up multiple lords as soon as you reasonably can, having them fight battles in unison - the supporting one will not get as much XP, but it still helps a lot. Also the "better" the victory, the more XP you get. Also, get necromancers ASAP. From rank 4 on, they are extremely valuable if you blob up your melee infantry, since they will provide potentially the entire army with regen, which almost increases your army´s power by 75%. They also give vigour mortis buff, which helps a lot, once they get a corpse cart. And since they can level up faster and safer than lords, you can also get them to cast WoD instead of your lords at the start. Grave guard is only situationally better than skeleton spearmen (spearmen specifically, due to charge defense and anti-large, both of which you need more than anti-infantry that GG comes with) and at the cost of a huge amount of magic compared to none. But sure, they can work, if you are really into them, or into masochism xP Isabella is great with vampire spam (the best and really only good use I find for vampire heroes tbh), Ghorst can, especially at the beginning, do with just normal units he will buff with Danse Macabre (same as other lords, it is an incredible effective buff for VC units) and his innate ability to give his army poison, the other lords I would definitely recommend using vargheists with as soon as you reasonably can, since their value is immense. Honestly, all of your armies should ideally have flyers since you have no ranged units. But at the beginning, it is fine to just have a few armies with skeletons to bulk up your main armies with meatshield, although I find putting 4 vargheists in makes the army vastly stronger, and you never know when you might need to use the army by itself.
Basically, until you have WoD, your main DPS source are probably going to be vargheists. And once you have WoD, you should still probably have them, since they are just that good and WoD won´t clutch everything. Vargheists are extremely strong to storm walls while sieging settlements, since they can´t get easily surrounded, and will obliterate any non anti-large units on the walls, especially ranged units you need to worry about the most. Same goes for the mortis engine; it is great in field battles, but bullshit OP in sieges. You just clog a gate with skeletons or any other troops which will deal roughly zero damage, but just place one mortis engine in there engaged in melee, and watch as it gets hundreds of kills by doing DoT to everything around it. The enemy are dwarfs and have ironbreakers and hammerers holding the gate? Who cares, they just die like anything else to the mortis engine´s aura. Terrorgheists have been buffed apparently, and their screams will do a huge amount of damage to any single entities. Almost one-shot a dwarfen ancestral ghost with a terrorgheist screech just a few days ago. With this knowledge, you should be able to put together your armies based on what units you like, what your situation is, who you are at war with an so on. But feel free to ask if you have any more questions ;)
first thing i do every time with vampire counts is spam necromancers and assassinate spam enemy heroes and grab the third level of blood dragon bloodline super early in the game, trust me its worth it
It is turn 120, I'm playing Kemmler. I am at war with The Vanaheimlings Chaos Reikland Torgovann Argwylon Karak Norn Cothique Yvresse The Order of Loremasters and Defenders of the Great Plan I started no wars with anybody except Marienberg around turn 5. Once I defeated them the Vanaheimlings saw me and immediately declared war. Paravon went to war with me and when I defeated them the wood elves declared war. I couldn't defeat Durthu with level 5 Necromancers and skeleton spam armies so I had to give up attacking the elves. Yvresse saw me as I was defending myself against Leon Leoncoeur and declared war on me then invited Cothique and the Order of Loremasters who sent Teclis all the way from the opposite end of the map to sack 2 of my cities before I got him under control. They send 2-4 armies at me constantly throughout my campaign. Karak Norn declared war on me around turn 20 and convinced Reikland to declare war on me, there was a time I was at war with 4 empire factions at once but Franz confederated them all once the Chaos invasion started. What did I do wrong? Other than Marienberg all I've done is defend myself but nobody would leave me alone. If it weren't for the fact that skeleton armies are cheap I would have lost a long time ago. I have 11 armies right now, 4 of which just constantly patrol Bretonnia for all the damned elves that come across the water and 2 more that are down south for Teclis who comes every few turns from across the map to start more shit. I confederated the Red Duke by paying him all the money around turn 80 or I would have no allies. Sylvania ignores me, won't even trade with me and the Von Carstein's are dead. If 5 factions is 'war with everyone' what does 12 factions at once count as? Ludicrous.
Ouch. The Wood Elves will usually ask for a peace treaty, after spending dozens of turns not bothering to attack anyone they've declared war on, and you want to avoid being on the High Elf radar at all cost, for as long as possible. That can be difficult, depending on how aggressive Cothique decides to be and how quickly the Red Duke attracts their attention. You probably should have pushed north, first, to take out Leoncoeur before he got crazy strong. It's safer to get attention from Norsca, than the doughnut. Reikland should be at green for a non-aggression treaty in the first few turns. He'll probably break it soon enough, but it'll lower his relations with your other neighbors enough to keep him from immediately joining wars. If you beat on your Dwarf neighbors enough, some of Brettonia will like you long enough for treaties until they decide to betray you. At this point, I'd suggest keeping the patrols going on the west coast, and making friends with Chaos, Norsca, Skavenblight, and Sartosa. Push east until you can get Chaos, Sylvania, Orcs, and Tomb Kings to take care of those borders. No defensive or military pacts, of course, since they won't be getting along with each other. That'll free you up to focus everything on taking out the High Elves.
@@futonrevolution7671 So, I haven't started over but things have gotten better. Because the Empire spent all their time attacking me they had absolutely no defense against Chaos and they got rolled over. The World Walkers confederated the Vanaheimlings who aren't at war with me so I don't have constant attacks from them anymore. The high elves are halfway gone from dark elves because again, they spent all their armies attacking me and not defending themselves. The wood elves just do nothing. Despite being at war with me since turn 20. They never attacked. The Dwarves have been all but defeated by the Greenskins. This is the dumbest way to run AI I could imagine. Because they only care about going to war with the player they get eaten by their neighbors. Who thought of this?
@Kevin Slater That's hilarious! With so many variablles that an improved AI would need to consider, CA's solution is to just crank a few numbers up to 11. Warhammer 3 will be the same way, except that they'll turn those numbers up to 15. The game's insanely aggressive "anti-player bias" (as Legend calls it) didn't expect you to play defensive for that long, and that well, so the Ordertide broke itself on your "staunch line of spears". I'm thinking that your Great Power penalty was low enough that the evil factions went after their ancestral enemies, instead of you. I want to try to see if I can replicate it in a less stressful way. I'm a bit of a scrub, so if I can do it and then become military allies with everyone who has my victory conditions, anyone can do it easily enough to become a reliable cheese, on par with using High Elf Influence. The lactose intolerant folks would have a difficult time, arguing that it's a bug or unloreful.

But yes, the AI is very dumb in some ways, and being overly aggressive towards one enemy while ignoring the others is one of such examples. Just had Reikland do the same in my Von Carstein campaign, and they weren´t even at war with me lol. They would just send literally ALL of their armies to raid my Nuln, to the extend where they let the Skullsmashers raze 2 of their cities right next to them xP I then finished the job.

Wind of Death _is_ good for Vampires Counts, it's one of the best spells in the game.

Looking at the diplomacy screen, you were unable to open diplomacy with Anghol. As such, it looks like they came in as a vassal of Chaos.
To save that someone two hours, here's a quick 6 point summary:
-Keep your vampire guy alive. He literally is the thing holding your army together
-Find the coolest looking things in your roster and build them
-Throw them both at the enemy
-Use heal/Invocation of Nehek
-Rinse and repeat until they run away or die
-Use their corpses to make new army (in campaign)
and RECRUIT NECROMANCERS. they are literally worth it if all they do is stand around.

On the battle occurring around 25:00 : With Vlad specifically, you can avoid the ammo wasting timesink by just rushing in your flying units whilst vanguard deploying your whole army. I find that this works so well that the Empire can't get any shots off and frequently finish the battle with no kills on their missile units and artillery. Bats are great throwaway units that can stop missiles from firing whilst the rest of your army closes in and they work particularly well with Vargheists and Warhounds. Use the bats to pin missile units and artillery in place/prevent firing, then follow up with Vargheists or Warhounds. The hounds kill such things faster (except against Dwarfs), whilst the Vargheists have better manoeuvrability and can get into retreated skirmish mode missile units faster. Watch out for heavy cavalry and heavy infantry - they will ruin your grounded flyers. If possible, use zombie summons to stop those threats, or throw bats at the problem and try to get away once you've cleared all missile units out.
And by the way, ammo wasting on this battle ends at 27:28

When you blob up your skeletons, I'm just imagining the necromancers in your army weaving them into a moving wall of grasping bones. It's already unnerving to fight a skeleton, but to see man's mortal form twisted even further by foul magic would cause nearly any soldier to rout.
this shit here is ones of the reasons i like the mod "Old-World Rites",
it gives a rites for vampires called the "Lahmian-Rite" which basically gives you a diplomatic bonus with every empire factions, and raise vampiric-corruption in every faction's regions you have trading pacts
it can completely change how you play the vampires, and let you actually play them as mannipulatives assholes who turns the empire against itself
you know, like you're actually... corrupting them?
it also a great-way to avoid being at war with 15 differents factions right from the beginning
Skeletons, Vargheists and The Wind of Death. The three tenants of the vampire counts. Extra points for running around with Vlad and Isabella together, a stack of skeletons for him and a stack of vargheists/vampire heroes for her.
BTW notice in this vid how war wagon mortars have much greater accuracy than standard ones, they do a lot more damage because of it. Hidden stats can vastly affect unit performance. A lot of people dismiss them without realising they are a massive improvement.
I find when the Skaven AI has a weak missile unit that you can't catch in melee, I just sit out their ammo with some fodder. You had skelechaff to spear, so send one unit as obvious missile bait to him and just wait it out. He'll come into melee when he's out of ammo.

Interesting, have tried Vampire Counts a couple of times but struggle a little at the start because of how weak skeletons are. Turns out Vampire's are all about that magic. Might have to give them another go.

If I see this kind of armies I wish CA would implement an upkeep reduction system for this units maybe based on the vampiric corruption where the local army is (then it could be more worth it to recruit this units on upper difficulties).After that the vampire counts are perfected as a faction.
That would be a great idea... using huge skeleton armies to overrun the enemies territory and then using the real and more powerful vampires to reinforce it would be a great way to play and also make sense lorewise...

That campaign looked like my legendary Isabella Von Carstain campaign. I got declared on by the Dwarfs really early on and managed to take out that faction, only to then have almost all the Empire factions declare, then the other Dwarf factions. I ended up in a postition where I could defend Sylvania (in one turn 4 Empire stacks attacked 2.5 stacks of mine, 3 of the Empire stacks were lead by legendary lords, and managed to kill all the lords and win the battle) but I couldn't manage to move out.

It is my campaign. I am not so bad at this game, but more of a TW Rome 2 player. It is completely different when you play a vamp faction. I can play Rome 2 on legendary... with one specific Rome fraction, but I CAN and without cheese... mostly. Why it took me 140 turns to get 2 provinces? Because I have looted and razed every settlement west with Reikland included. My plan is to keep 3-5 provinces and loot every human settlement around. I see my mistakes and will learn from them. Thanks for showing me how to play and what was wrong, much appreciated.
With the game constantly shoving the vampire corruption mechanic in your face, it's easy to get trapped in a turtling state of mind.
Just hearing a comment you made about Arcane conduit reminded me of when I was first learning the game.
I honestly Didn't know how the spell and mana system worked at all. Like, I did full campaigns without ever really using any magic because even reading the tooltips and understanding what it was trying to communicate was difficult as someone new.
Not sure if this kind of content is something you're interested in anymore, but a Magic 101, explaining how to understand the spell system, the strength of different schools, how conduits work and how/what increases/effects your regen rate or total capacity.
He's got some Top Five lists that go into the strengths of different schools.

For people who don't like skeleton spam, but want a smooth campaign what you can do is, simply make a random lord, at each city you have. Like a Vampiric Guard regement. Then when you do goto war, or order tide trys to run in, you can rally all your guards to defend and overwhelm them. You'll easyily be able to aford 2 - 3 expensive army's along with this strat. and that's without even taking over all of the empire. I personally go for the dwarfs as fast as possible because I don't want to deal with dwarfs lategame. Magic resist, arty, and unbreakable high armored elite units are a real bain to the vampire counts. They can deal with it, but its not like the empire which you can run over. I swear if they give dwarves single large monsters in Warhammer 3 they'll completely fuck over the VC
Medium campaign turn 155 and I littery got help from the empire and golden order to defeat chaos that was fun to see them clapp chaos armies die but killing half of them and then just throw 1000ths of skeletons at them to slowly thin them out

I'm glad, a year later, that we don't need Legend to do our Auto Resolve calculations for us. I know they added it in... some patch for 2, but I can't believe it took them so long to add that feature.
You could have used the vanguard deployement trait from Vlad which affects the whole army in the second battle against Boris Todbringer and rush him with all your infantry (for those people who do not want to waste the ammunition of the AI), so the mortars and hellfire cannons would also deal minor damage.
Maybe if he wanted to lose. keep in mind this is legendary difficulty you cant do yolo shit. even if you did that and won you might have to fight another battle after.

I never get Manny & co. tbh. It's too bothersome a confederation compared to taking Drakenhof on turn 3 or 4 and just wiping him out. The Bloodline lords are more than fine substitutes.
It's not completely necessary, but manfred is an absolute beast of a lord, at times he can pretty much destroy entire armies by himself, you can still take drakenhof early, you just need to then subjugate manfred to a minor province.

for Vampires the best option
Start with Isabel, in the second turn you recruit Vlad
And then in the third turn you take Drakenhof
after that you just recruit Vampires
by the 17th turn you have Doomstack
Vlad + 11 Flying Vampires +1 Banche + 7 Skeletons (free) in turn 73
all Vampires must have fly mount and Hunger trait
i usually take "Dread Incarnate" and "Disciplined" as the main trait

why would you put the vampires on Vlad? Izzy buffs them.
Start with Vlad (faster campaign movement),
get Izzy turn 1,
give her the ladies,
get vlad skellies and zombies and a necromancer and or wight king.
Take out all templehofs, leave nothing for mannfred.
Research free skellies, raise another army (or two), take out Drycha.
By that time you can confederate Mannfred.
By turn 70 you should have 5-6 armies anyway even on legendary, especially after getting free skellies and zombies and cutting hero upkeep by half.
"Doomstacks" are pointless since they are expensive and you need to cover a lot of ground. Better to have 9 ok armies with strong lords and heroes than 2 uber imba doomstacks. + you want to have as high income as possible since VC buildings are really expensive.
And just add elite units over time as economy allows and specialise (flying units for Izzy, cavalry/grave guard for blood knight VL etc. (Ghorst is super effective and fun with all zombie stack supported by something else).
Get Lahmia lord and farm blood kisses. :)

@@tihomirrasperic Isabella has better defense than Vlad, especially in the early game, and as Finwaell says, it would be a massive waste not to utilize Isabella´s +10 +10 buff to vampires. You can use her if you wanna use the strategy described, although I am skeptical as to how effective that is now that the AI actually dicks around with their troops instead of blobbing up around any target they can see. With Isabella, you can just send her thot squad into melee with mostly anything and they will win anyway.

I use Vlad as a tank, he holds the middle with a few skeletons of spearmen, and the Vampires are on top from all sides with magic and traits.
In addition, the Vlad can attack fortified cities,
this build showed me the best results and I am satisfied with how it works
I take out the hellfire by putting the Varghiest in the corner since they can vanguard deploy
Only really works when ur attacking tho, the ai will take the bait and turn the artillery around and u can just flap them around to waste ammo as your infantry moves in
Ah, the Normal dfficulty where on turn 130 empire fields shieldless spears and archers, unlike Legendary where they go on you with hellstorms and stemtanks by turn 35-50 xD Luckily Vlad can take out a stem tank 1v1 by lvl 12 or so. :)

Hey Legend, so in this video you mention that you favor Skeleton spam + Lord magic / Wind of Death, but you say "you don't have to do that if you don't want". I have a couple questions that I think would relate to this "guide" video and they are:
1) What do you do to "get there" in the first place? Like before you have enough of the necromancer recruit building and the free skelly research for insta Wind of Death heroes and free army units - what kind of army should I be running up until that point?
2) If "skelly spam" is your #1 best Vampire army composition, what would you say are #2 and #3? This could be at any point in the game - anything goes (except maybe a full army of heroes). Do you see Grave Guard as being viable? Is it Terrorgheist spam? or like what are some alternatives to skelly spam that you think would be viable even if they're not "optimal"
You can get free skelly spam by turn 18 or so, until then (and honestly, even well after I would recommend) just run any infantry you get your hands on, using them as meatshield, and take out vulnerable/dangerous units with preferably 4 units of vargheists per army. As Von Carstein, you can recruit them right off the bat (haha), and they are SUPER good, even on L/VH, unlike most of the VC roster. They are very fragile, especially to missiles, but they dish out loads of damage and stagger enemies on charge, so if you use them well, you can get hundreds of kills per unit in most battles. Also I would beeline for WoD on any lord, even skipping Route Marcher probably. You really need that magic DPS as the VC.
Also, yes, terrorgheists are very good as support units for taking out strategic targets, or even as a doomstack if you can afford it. They don´t dish out anywhere near as much damage as the vargheists, but also are way more resilient and better for taking out large units. I can then also recommend the mortis engine, extremely powerful units if you use them properly, and even blood knights are ok, though not amazing on L/VH. Their stats are top-notch though, so even then they will perform alright.

One question I still have is about filler in the meantime - I understand that you can get free skeletons early, but you can't exactly get the Vampires at the level you need early on. Do you really just spam full skeleton armies without the spellcasters then? Recruit spellcaster lords and try to keep them alive? Or is skeleton spam just good enough without Wind of Death.
Also, what else would you combine with the Mortis Engine? or do you just put that in with Skeletons? I don't really play on L/VH, and I don't necessarily like only using one or two single compositions my entire game, so I'm trying to get an idea of what else is supposed to work well besides just skeletons + wind of death.
Like i asked originally, what would a second- and third-best composition look like for the Vampire Counts? Or do you only ever use skeletons + WoD and ignore the rest
@@itsmehawkeyeg Well, that´s complicated. The Vampire Counts have it kinda hard early on, until they get one or two proficient spellcasters that can cast some good AoE damage spells (mostly WoD). For that reason, I recommend leaning rather heavily into levelling up multiple lords as soon as you reasonably can, having them fight battles in unison - the supporting one will not get as much XP, but it still helps a lot. Also the "better" the victory, the more XP you get.
Also, get necromancers ASAP. From rank 4 on, they are extremely valuable if you blob up your melee infantry, since they will provide potentially the entire army with regen, which almost increases your army´s power by 75%. They also give vigour mortis buff, which helps a lot, once they get a corpse cart. And since they can level up faster and safer than lords, you can also get them to cast WoD instead of your lords at the start.
Grave guard is only situationally better than skeleton spearmen (spearmen specifically, due to charge defense and anti-large, both of which you need more than anti-infantry that GG comes with) and at the cost of a huge amount of magic compared to none. But sure, they can work, if you are really into them, or into masochism xP
Isabella is great with vampire spam (the best and really only good use I find for vampire heroes tbh), Ghorst can, especially at the beginning, do with just normal units he will buff with Danse Macabre (same as other lords, it is an incredible effective buff for VC units) and his innate ability to give his army poison, the other lords I would definitely recommend using vargheists with as soon as you reasonably can, since their value is immense. Honestly, all of your armies should ideally have flyers since you have no ranged units. But at the beginning, it is fine to just have a few armies with skeletons to bulk up your main armies with meatshield, although I find putting 4 vargheists in makes the army vastly stronger, and you never know when you might need to use the army by itself.
Basically, until you have WoD, your main DPS source are probably going to be vargheists. And once you have WoD, you should still probably have them, since they are just that good and WoD won´t clutch everything. Vargheists are extremely strong to storm walls while sieging settlements, since they can´t get easily surrounded, and will obliterate any non anti-large units on the walls, especially ranged units you need to worry about the most. Same goes for the mortis engine; it is great in field battles, but bullshit OP in sieges. You just clog a gate with skeletons or any other troops which will deal roughly zero damage, but just place one mortis engine in there engaged in melee, and watch as it gets hundreds of kills by doing DoT to everything around it. The enemy are dwarfs and have ironbreakers and hammerers holding the gate? Who cares, they just die like anything else to the mortis engine´s aura. Terrorgheists have been buffed apparently, and their screams will do a huge amount of damage to any single entities. Almost one-shot a dwarfen ancestral ghost with a terrorgheist screech just a few days ago.
With this knowledge, you should be able to put together your armies based on what units you like, what your situation is, who you are at war with an so on. But feel free to ask if you have any more questions ;)

I started no wars with anybody except Marienberg around turn 5. Once I defeated them the Vanaheimlings saw me and immediately declared war. Paravon went to war with me and when I defeated them the wood elves declared war. I couldn't defeat Durthu with level 5 Necromancers and skeleton spam armies so I had to give up attacking the elves. Yvresse saw me as I was defending myself against Leon Leoncoeur and declared war on me then invited Cothique and the Order of Loremasters who sent Teclis all the way from the opposite end of the map to sack 2 of my cities before I got him under control. They send 2-4 armies at me constantly throughout my campaign. Karak Norn declared war on me around turn 20 and convinced Reikland to declare war on me, there was a time I was at war with 4 empire factions at once but Franz confederated them all once the Chaos invasion started.
What did I do wrong? Other than Marienberg all I've done is defend myself but nobody would leave me alone. If it weren't for the fact that skeleton armies are cheap I would have lost a long time ago. I have 11 armies right now, 4 of which just constantly patrol Bretonnia for all the damned elves that come across the water and 2 more that are down south for Teclis who comes every few turns from across the map to start more shit. I confederated the Red Duke by paying him all the money around turn 80 or I would have no allies. Sylvania ignores me, won't even trade with me and the Von Carstein's are dead. If 5 factions is 'war with everyone' what does 12 factions at once count as? Ludicrous.
Ouch. The Wood Elves will usually ask for a peace treaty, after spending dozens of turns not bothering to attack anyone they've declared war on, and you want to avoid being on the High Elf radar at all cost, for as long as possible. That can be difficult, depending on how aggressive Cothique decides to be and how quickly the Red Duke attracts their attention. You probably should have pushed north, first, to take out Leoncoeur before he got crazy strong. It's safer to get attention from Norsca, than the doughnut. Reikland should be at green for a non-aggression treaty in the first few turns. He'll probably break it soon enough, but it'll lower his relations with your other neighbors enough to keep him from immediately joining wars. If you beat on your Dwarf neighbors enough, some of Brettonia will like you long enough for treaties until they decide to betray you.
At this point, I'd suggest keeping the patrols going on the west coast, and making friends with Chaos, Norsca, Skavenblight, and Sartosa. Push east until you can get Chaos, Sylvania, Orcs, and Tomb Kings to take care of those borders. No defensive or military pacts, of course, since they won't be getting along with each other. That'll free you up to focus everything on taking out the High Elves.
@@futonrevolution7671 So, I haven't started over but things have gotten better. Because the Empire spent all their time attacking me they had absolutely no defense against Chaos and they got rolled over. The World Walkers confederated the Vanaheimlings who aren't at war with me so I don't have constant attacks from them anymore. The high elves are halfway gone from dark elves because again, they spent all their armies attacking me and not defending themselves. The wood elves just do nothing. Despite being at war with me since turn 20. They never attacked. The Dwarves have been all but defeated by the Greenskins.
This is the dumbest way to run AI I could imagine. Because they only care about going to war with the player they get eaten by their neighbors. Who thought of this?
@Kevin Slater That's hilarious! With so many variablles that an improved AI would need to consider, CA's solution is to just crank a few numbers up to 11. Warhammer 3 will be the same way, except that they'll turn those numbers up to 15.
The game's insanely aggressive "anti-player bias" (as Legend calls it) didn't expect you to play defensive for that long, and that well, so the Ordertide broke itself on your "staunch line of spears". I'm thinking that your Great Power penalty was low enough that the evil factions went after their ancestral enemies, instead of you. I want to try to see if I can replicate it in a less stressful way. I'm a bit of a scrub, so if I can do it and then become military allies with everyone who has my victory conditions, anyone can do it easily enough to become a reliable cheese, on par with using High Elf Influence. The lactose intolerant folks would have a difficult time, arguing that it's a bug or unloreful.
@@kevinslater4126 Honestly, you just got really unlucky there I think. But yes, the AI is very dumb in some ways, and being overly aggressive towards one enemy while ignoring the others is one of such examples. Just had Reikland do the same in my Von Carstein campaign, and they weren´t even at war with me lol. They would just send literally ALL of their armies to raid my Nuln, to the extend where they let the Skullsmashers raze 2 of their cities right next to them xP I then finished the job.
