  • Sid Caesar spoofs the classic Italian film, "The Bicycle Thief". What other variety show would satirize Italian neorealist cinema? With Imogene Coca and Carl Reiner.

I'm italian and I can say that Sid was the best one here, his pronunciation of the words is really accurate, it's nonsense but they really sounds like italian words. The thing I love the most is that he doesn't seems a classic italian caricature, no hand gesture, no "mamma mia" or "pizza", he really look like an authentic italian man. One trick he used was to put real italian words here and there like "bambino" or "mi scusi" or "arrivederci". He was great!

Probably the best ever at dialect comedy with incredible skill at mimicking the sounds of foreign languages without being fluent in any of them. You picked up on one of the things he could do so well--putting in occasional real words in the languages along with imitating their sounds and rhythms. His "French" and "German" are great as well. I've seen one sketch where, as a German conductor, he gives passionate, detailed instructions to the orchestra--and even though it sounds authentically German, it's all gibberish! An amazing talent. ---kjh

Imogene Coca was one of the greats. Interesting how many great performers started as dancers.

My favorite 'Immy' moment is in the take off of From Here to Eternity' she plays the red hot dance hall mama. All the G.I.'s crowd around her in her low cut dress, "Take it easy boys, there's enough for everybody!" and she looks so FLAT chested and skinny! Love her.

I remember seeing this when it was first broadcast. They used to do all those "foreign" movies: German, french, etc. and you'd swear they were actually speaking the language!

Really fun last couple twists! And it's always amazing they could sustain the double-talk for so long.

Loved practically everything Sid ever did -- but this sketch w/ "Immy" (as he always called her) & the recently departed Carl Reiner is a particular favourite. Sid got so skinny in his later years that it's weird to see him rather portly here (adorably so, I might add)) -- and to see Carl looking so svelte! This is a really masterful send-up of "The Bicycle Thief" -- intelligent, but not in the least pretentious. (Sid excelled at playing working-class guys of various nationalities -- "little schleppers," as he called them -- were struggling to get ahead in life or, failing that, trying to at least maintain their dignity under challenging circumstances. It's a struggle to which most us can relate -- which explains why his material (much like "The Honeymooners") still holds up today. Thanks so much for posting!!
