I'm planning a North to South walk for in a few weeks but doing ot over 3 days 2 night's because I'm so unfit and it takes time to film too. So I've found this very interesting thanks mate 😁👍
Yeh, I know...supposed to watch this part first, then part 2 and then the packing video but I have to be different so watched the packing video first, then your sleeping bag review and then this part! Now going to watch part 2. Interesting video and looking forward to the next part. Stay safe and stay healthy. Cheers. Ken.
Its my fault, I don't set them in order in the playlists. You still get the same info no matter what order you watch them in though. Thanks for catching up!
Cheers, Trevor. I’m doing exactly the same at the moment! A 2 night trek across the moor trying to avoid the bogs of the north 😂 Look forward to finding your others videos on the route.
Looks fun. Watch that area on the approach to Ryders Hill, Holne Moor, in poor visability that can be very disorientating. If you remember our write up in TGO it is also tough going near Hangingstone Hill, those paths are on the map bit not on the ground. All part of the fun though. :) Take care.
Cheers, Martin. I will bare that in mind - hopefully, though, as I am travelling alone and can take off at the drop of a hat, I will be able to chose a weekend when the weather is on my side. Cheating, I know haha. Hope you are keeping well!
Can't wait to get out there now Trev.. My 1st two wild camps last year. One of which after a 15 mile hike was at Bellever tor on a beautiful sunset / sunrise, this video just wetting my appetite as new to the game and at 52 these kind of insightful videos help me fast track myself to get out there more confidently Thanks for sharing
Great to see you going through the planning process - and especially as it is for crossing Dartmoor. I grew up there many many years ago, and cross crossed it dozens of times as a youngster. Have wild camped around Bellever Forest loads of times, although nowadays it is probably a lot more restricted. Anyway am looking forward to following your planning and journey. 👍
This will be a great walk and TH-cam Series. Pupers Hill is a good summit too. When restrictions are lifted we might bump into each other as I'm doing the Two Moors Way in the other direction. Regards Phill
Thanks for your route.. Very similar to my planned route which gives me confidence. Its my first visit to dartmoor so the more info the better... Your advice on planning and noting down markers ect on the way is great. Saves keep looking at the map. 👍😎
Enjoyed that, takes me right back to when I was a D of E instructor and we took silver and Gold groups to Dartmoor and they did south to North while we lounged around in the minibus !!!!! Great times!! You'l have a cracking trip on that if the weather is with you..
Haha! Sounds like a holiday!! I'm certainly looking forward to it. Why don't you bring the minibus and lounge just in case I get fed up haha, Cheers for watching!
Brilliant Trev. Its great to see how you are planning this. I hope to do this in August but take 4 days. I will take a similar route but will camp near Brown heath (where the Two Moors Way meets the Abbot's Way. The next day i will go to Princetown, possibly camping at The Plume Of Feathers Inn. Then somewhere near Postbridge or Fernworthy reservoir. Then walk back to my car at Belstone car park. ATB. Josh
That's looks a good route trev, your psyching me up to get on the moors again 😂. All my walks have started from post bridge carpark which is good cause of the national trust toilets, post office with tea and bacon burgers, and a pub :). I've done the exact route u have marked from postbridge, sittaford tor as far as hang stone hill and back , it's a good route . Because of the army towers and farming I recall there being a landrover quadbike track from post bridge to hanger stone hill ,via the stones and sittaford , cant recall how the land rover gets round sittaford :). It's legal to camp on the west side of sittaford tor in the boundary wall constraints and down the river valley below which have done a few times :) lookin forward to your walk that's a big one ! :)
Yeah, its a long old walk, but surprisingly not as long as I would have expected. I forgot to mention the overall distance in this video, but it'll give you something to look forward to for the following episode. I'm looking forward to it. Hopefully not too long now.
Postbridge to fernworthy forest is a clear path and by fernworthy there is a old farm called teinghead farm. It’s a nice camp site(even if technically illegal 😂) with good water access and sheltered. From teignhead farm there is a path that runs north west up manga hill towards hangingstone and Whitehorse hill. From hangingstone it’s follow the yellow brick road home! I’ve planned to do north to south, hoping I can do it in a day!
I reckon you should be able to do it in a day - its about thirty odd miles so at a push its achievable. I tested the route from hangingstone hill this morning. Easy peasy. Cheers for the tips. Cheers!
Nice video Trev looking forward to it. What I can remember from my Ten Tors day of Hanginstone hill is that there is a clear path up to the top it has a hut there as well. Also the walk from Postbridge to Sittaford is a trek of about 45 minutes but the area is lovely just hope the weather shows when you are out. All the best
Ah, that sounds lovely, Harry. I look forward to seeing it. And as it's just me myself and I going, I can pretty much pick the weekend I go based on the forecast, so, yes, the weather should be in my favour (famous last words).
Perhaps the group you were talking about that went north to south did this to avoid any camping issues. As a lone walker you should find a spot easily for the evening without upsetting anyone.
No, the group I was going with was going to hike the whole length in one day - I thought I'd just stroll it, take in some views and camp somewhere en route.
I have enjoyed looking at maps .. the only snag is EVERY walk looks easy when you are sitting on the table studying the map .. a ,12 inch walk is easy .. in the hills, it feels much harder and certainly longer.
There's a piece of private land just south of bellever Bridge where lots of campers flock in the summer trev it can get a bit busy but you can camp there, I'd take your hammock and camp in the forest 😜
Ah, great tip, cheers. Maybe I will keep an eye for that! I will getthe hammock out again, but dont fancy carrying all that goes with it for a hike across Dartmoor! Thanks for watching.
Brilliant, I'm so looking forward to getting back out there when restrictions lift but a bit apprehensive about how busy it'll all be. I've got a 3/4 day trip planned to do a loop around all of Dartmoor, can't wait, though that might be too much time! Really enjoyed the video, was hoping you'd stop past red lake on your route, such a beautiful spot there
Yea, I have been thinking exactly the same thing. I reckon it will be busy, hopefully not so busy the deeper into the moor we go. I will probably wait for a week or two for the crowds to get thin. Thanks for watching
@@SummitOrNothing I was thinking of waiting too, to let things die down a bit first. I feel like tensions could get quite high if local areas near Dartmoor, Snowdonia etc get inundated by visitors (less relevant for you since you're a Dartmoor local!) and I don't want to contribute to that. I mean, solo wild camping is pretty much zero risk right but it contributes to the mass of people unless you can park away from the local towns. Things just feel a bit awkward I guess but these trips are so important for my mental health and I'm sure that's the case with many others
Looks a descent route trev.. Be it I really don't know dartmoor at all.. But does look like you'll miss any deep valleys with overgrown ferns..😜 Logistically I'd carry my "TINNIES"..!! Couldn't take chance of not making /finding a pub.!! Look forward to see how you will deal with the issue in the next episode 👍🍻
Haha... I certainly hope not to come across any ferns, George. As for drink, I usually have a run hip flask and that's about it. Never been too fussed for drinking, tbh. A nice bitter shandy hits the spot after a coast walk, sometimes.
Love the videos, inspired me to do my first wild camp in dartmoor. We started at Combestone tor, went up to Ryder's Hill, past snowdon, down to Holne then back to Combestone tor. We ended up camping in a little valley to the east of Ryder's hill, with lovely views out to the sea and it was nice and sheltered from the wind. Thought you could consider this as a place to camp although pretty sure it's on the edge of the wild camping map so might be hard to stay inside it. Keep up the good work.
Trev, going that route take a detour from the two moors way and take a look at the settlements at Erme pound, maybe catch you along the way depending on when you go
Hi Steve - well, we will have to wait and see what Dartmoor.gov have to say, waiting for them to release a statement... may not be able to camp yet but yeah... soon.. we are getting ever closer.
I can do it in two, I reckon, its not actually as many miles as it seems. If I can get a good push on the first day, the second day will be an early start and a leisurely stroll.... (famous last words? haha)
On my last walk up on the Moor (many weeks ago now😔), I found myself up on Great Mis...the weather was perfect as I looked toward the north Moor and I thought that, I could just keep walking until I got to Fur Tor and beyond and I promised myself that I was going to do a South to North with an ‘over-nighter’....weather permitting of course (it is meant to be fun😄), so I’ll be interested to see how your route pans out. I did laugh at “Poopers Hill”....😂...great vid, keep them coming👍🏻
Yea, I know what you mean. I love looking out across the moor and thinking about conquering it lol. It's amazing how much of it I have got to see in the past three years or so, such a shame this has happened and scuppered my plans. I was going to get loads done this year too
Is there a specific map that one can carry ie or similar to an OS map that shows the permissible areas one is allowed to camp, or is it simply a case of learning from experience where the various designated wild camp areas begin and end. This is a great video thanks as I’m intending to travel from London to Dartmoor to have a couple of wild camps. Driven round much of it and done a few short walks but this will be my first time really hiking and camping

I can see Cosdon Hill and Yes Tor from my front door, but it's too far to walk from here to the moor. Tantalising, it's so cruel. I wouldn't fancy doing your walk in two days, not at my age anyway.
Summit Or Nothing true, although my tarp and hammock is less than a tent. Only gets worse if I need to use under blanket which I guess being U.K. you probably will. 😂
