    I’m just getting started with railroading. I’m just a green rookie. I’ve been just window shopping at this point. Still trying to decide which scale would be a great starter. I like the simplicity of this Kato starter set and the price range is in the ball park. Thanks for sharing

    Welcome to the world of N scale and good choice with the Kato set. I have been using Kato since 2009 and in my opinion, they are the Volvo and Rolls Royce of model trains for reliability and durability. They are friendly enough to entice newcomers into the hobby and are good value for money.

    I didn't know N scale can be so detailed and actually lights up pretty sweet. Nice NS 40th anniversary box car there. Might try an N scale set like this in the future to add to my HO layout I already have. Thanks for showing us this starter set. Have a good Christmas and Happy New Year.

    My man! I probably live about 5 miles from you. Have been watching the videos on closed stores (same age, but grew up central pa - went to hills, ames, jamesway, kmart plenty).
    Kato was the bees knees when I was a kid - the first low noise engines on HO layouts. Have none of it now, but still have a small LGB layout.
    (didn't find any kato at hills, ames, jamesway, or kmart in the old days!)

      @warrenholmar1129 ปีที่แล้ว

      The good thing about N scale is that you can model more in a smaller space.
      HO takes a lot of room.
      On the plus size HO gives you more opportunity for detail.

    People keep recommending Kato and I might just try one. I have a fondness for 'quirky' railroads, there was the Fettling on Sea to Tethers End Light Railway, a British shortline from the 1950s set in a valley running from a port on one leg via the main board with an oval on it to allow continuous run and onto the terminus up at the head of the valley. I wrote some articles in Railway Modeller on the rolling stock and some scenic items. I got a good deal on a Fleichman starter set and it ran well but I wanted a US style shortline, basically an oval on a door with a switching yard and external line at the back and a set of docks at the front with a couple of siding into the town. Sadly the Fleichmann 7.5 inch radius curves killed my US outline loco (works okay with Fleichman and some Japanese locos though). That German stuff, with a small switcher and a couple of railcars along with four the locomotives (two diesel from the starter sets and a couple of old steamers), rolling stock and some scenic stuff was offered to a friend who wanted to get into model railroading. If you go to igg dot org dot uk and scroll down to Outline history of the Great Grand Fenwick Railway (and Sons) I put up the track plan and back-story. Like I said I like quirky and this was based on Grand Fenwick, the country that featured in The Mouse that Roared and The Mouse that Went To The Moon, and being a somewhat eclectic collection of stock I thought the back story was necessary. Put up some progress vids on your layout, I'm sure lots of us would like to see how you get on..

    With DC power the loco movement is always in the same direction for the same setting of the direction switch - even if you reverse the direction that the loco points to. If you put the loco at the other end of the train then forward and reverse will work correctly ... just something to get used to.

    One major flaw of this set is that the 6 Kato freight cars are actually Japanese rolling stock painted to look American, maybe a causal modeller or beginner won't mind. That's definitely not something a rivet counter striving for accuracy would want behind an American loco. 🤣

    • @warrenholmar1129
      @warrenholmar1129 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I love Kato but I am picky about what I get... Personally I would be looking at the Super Chief starter set.
      Also alot of what Kato do is too new anyway.
      All that said the three train sets I have from Kato are very nice!
      The ability to fit DCC/sound is very easy.
