Which is Better Value?! LEGO PAB Cups Jugs vs Cardboard Boxes Pick a Brick Build

  • In this video we are going to compare the old Pab Jugs / cups to the new LEGO cardboard boxes from the Pick and Build walls (aka Pick a brick) - which is better value. Is this a case of shrinkflation by LEGO where they are reducing the size of what it is but still keeping it at the same price.
    In the UK, these are £14.99 each. One was recently filled up at Lester Square city store in London. The other was done at the Bluewater LEGO store which is east of London (which seems to be one of the trialing places for these boxes, along with a store in Berlin).
    We will be doing this with a 4x4 plate element as this would help getting us better sizes in the box and seeing which is better value. Is this a good move by LEGO or a step backwards?

    Good job.. as a Bricklinker it hurts my eyes to see parts stuck together but for personal use it makes sense to stack the items from PAB.

    The new BOXES look great! Hopefully it will have a positive effect on wider pricing, as plenty of Brinklink stores top up stock from the PAB wall when good parts come in. so we may see a slight drop on BL prices for some stuff. thinking 2x4 bricks etc maybe I'm just being overly optimistic there?!

    • @mattelder
      @mattelder  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I think they are much better. I think if they are easier to stack and you aren't dealing with a tapering cylinder, it can only be a good thing. Here's hoping there are more opportunities for BL sellers. Certainly the 25% increase in PaB cups a couple of years ago hurt.

      In the UK, on 1/1/2022 the Pab cuips increased price overnight by 25%, along with other prices. UK also had further price increases september 2022, like most of the rest of the world (so the hit on some sets got hit twice ie Assembly Square).

    Honestly I'm eager for the shift to the boxes. I was like you, very hesitant and worried. I'm curious if they'll still allow the use of the plastic cups once the boxes are fully transitioned in. I see the cups being useful for bulk small (keyword small) pieces and the boxes being useful for big piece bulk.
    Also I'm curious if there's a relatively easy way to collapse the boxes down so they can be stored flat instead of boxy.

    • @mattelder
      @mattelder  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      At bluewater they still allow the use of plastic cups and where even talking if allowing you to exchange pab for the boxes. Collapsing the boxes is dead simple, along with poping them up. Store really well and carry nicely in a back pack / bag

  • @Ednet34
    @Ednet34 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Interesting.
    I have used his measures and counted it with 23x11 studs. So it is 253 studs per level.
    With 1x2 bricks: 760 parts
    With 1x2 tiles: a bit over 3.000 parts
    In the old plastic cups you could fit in around 650 1x2 bricks (stacked like he stacked the plates in this video).
    Then you cannot even compate the 1x2 tiles, because you cant stack them in the plastic cups. Even if you could it would be 2600 and because you cant i guess more in the 2200 range because there is a lot of air between the parts.
    So you have around 20% more volume in the new cardoard boxes what is actually amazing.
    Price calculation.
    With the 1x2 bricks; when you choose for example the Light Bluish Gray Masonry bricks, they cost 4ct/piece in germany. 760x 4ct + 5 euro shipping would be 35€.
    So the pab option saves you around 50% compared to bricklink.
    With the 1x2 tiles it is even better.
    When i want to buy 3.000 of them in trans light blue it is 2ct/piece. So it will be 60€+5€ shipping so 65€.
    With the pab you save around 70% compared to bricklink.
    So this is a very good solution for creatong water for example

    • @mattelder
      @mattelder  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Love the analysis! It all sounds great. The one thing you might not be accounting for is the time to stack 760 1x2 bricks. Not impossible but how long do you want to stand there 😋🤔 .
      It will be interesting to see how it all goes.

    • @Ednet34
      @Ednet34 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mattelder well yeah that takes a while. But it is compensated by saving 50% or more. Im building a huge pirate Moc, that will have the size of around 30 48x48 baseplates. It will be with a few pirate ships, houses, troops, villagers, pirate island and a islanders village.
      Right now, i have 5 ships (10040 barracuda, 2x creator ship, brick bounty, and the blue coat ship). Then im already building my port city with houses, docks, imperial fort, market, etc. Right at the moment im sorting out the parts for the medieval village and the ideas medieval blacksmith.
      I have more than 120 blue and redcoats, a lot of pirates and some pirates of the caribbean figures.
      And in total i spent 0 for that.
      My lego story is this: when i was child i was plsying lego. Then at some point i stopped and a few months ago, i wanted to build a pirate ship. I found it used from a woman nearby and she is selling used lego for years.
      So i started selling aswell, and i have a business now that refinances my hobby. I buy up used lego from pricate sellers, sort out figures and popular sets and expensive parts and sell them. I have over 100kg of lego from that and im at a net profit of 2.000€ after 4 months. In total i bought lego for around 2.500 and sold things for 4.500.
      It is crazyyy.

    Very good video! Thank you for your time and work here! Now we need a comparison of how the new boxes fit irregular, curved and large elements. On my 4-hour train ride yesterday, I spent over an hour re-packing my small PAB box (from the Hamburg LEGO Store) to see how compact I could get it. My buy included some wagon wheels and windshield pieces. I didn't have a small cup with me for comparison, so I'll try it later at home. The box needs a window and waterproofing, but it's ok. I'll miss the cups.
