  • Marineland is a massive amusement and animal park on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. This theme park features a small, but unique ride lineup with rides such as Dragon Mountain and Sky Screamer. Then you also have sea and land creatures scattered about. But the most notable thing about this park is how weird it is. Find out why in this review!

I remember going there as kid. I remember really wanting to leave which is unusual but I understand why now… it’s normal to be frightened to see a whale in a fish tank. For me it was always weird… I remember the commercials and everything, like the “everyone loves marine land” one. Now looking back on it I’m glad I was able to visit for the experience… but screw that place.

As someone who lives in the area, a big problem with it is the location. It’s basically out of the way from downtown. Far away from the main attraction of Niagara Falls, the waterfall and downtown.
It has huge potential, but sadly has been neglected for decades.

@@CanobieCoaster it also doesn’t help the public transit is how shall I say… bad. 1 ride an hour, that’s it. Compare this to my stay at universal studios and that was like every 10 minutes to the hotel and back. Apparently the city is supposed to be adding more bus lines in the future, but without frequency, the only people who’ll use them are the poor and the desperate. And for a tourist city, that’s not good

Can confirm based on the opinions of locals (I'm related to a few, and am friends with some locals, I went to school there) that yeah it's pretty sketch, the lack of people on Canada Day weekend kinda isn't shocking. I've fixed this place up in my head but can see Gene Staples having a massive "bring it back to life from defunct" project should he choose it in the future. Edit: gosh dang it I have that song in my head now ahhhh!

It would mean an influx of things like coasters for sure but the Canadian view on Marine mammal parks is quite poor, most of my friends cringe why I say that I've ridden Mako, Kraken and Manta because that means I've been to SWO and they don't like that so I would expect that move to not add much to the public perception of the park.

As someone who has visited Marineland twice, I must say it is a pretty sad park with good potential. It was so weird being one of the only people there, especially in an area with so many tourists. It doesn't help that there were signs saying boycott Marineland near the entrance though...

But the opening of Canada’s Wonderland in 1981 took away the entire northern portion of its catchment area, restricting MarineLand to just the Niagara Falls/Western NY area. If the park had been built out to full potential then, it’s likely someone else buys the park well before the problems happened.

Considering how much negative attention Marineland has received due to the poor treatment of many of its animals (and rightfully so), I think its best chance for survival is to phase the animal exhibits completely out and concentrate more on rides. Sure, it might feel more like a Canada's Wonderland clone then, but Niagara Falls is a large enough tourist area to support a full-fledged amusement park, and Wonderland could do with some of its crowds being dispersed. Marineland needs to reinvent itself. Otherwise, for rides, go to Canada's Wonderland. To see animals that *are* well-treated, go to the Toronto Zoo.

I agree. Great Escape in Queensbury, NY does a ton of business from non-locals on vacation at Lake George (as well as some from Saratoga although that’s about an hour away). MarineLand could aim to be more like that park with appeal to vacationers - eliminate the animal attractions (I would go to Niagara Aquarium on the US side for that anyway), add in rides to fill out their line-up and possibly add an outdoor waterpark. (Wouldn’t do an indoor waterpark since NF has numerous already).
The target demo should be families with young kids, so Great Escape and Idlewild should be the general vibe they shoot for.

Marineland would be a good candidate for a Gravity Group coaster. Plenty of land means they can have freedom to design something like the jungle trailblazers GG built in china. It would be a standout attraction. Out of the 5 wooden coasters in Canada, only 1 is any good, and that is in Vancouver. As an added bonus, Gravity Group does most of their sub-contracting with Martin & Vleminckx, a Canadian based company.

I have personally talked to the wife and she is such a sweet lady and really wants to see the park become as popular as it was in the 80s and 90s. Even through COVID the difference she has made in the park is very evident! One issue likely scaring off a potential buyer: the park is currently under a criminal indictment for mistreatment of animals on its grounds. Until that case is over, no one will even consider a bid. A conviction likely will put the company into insolvency proceedings, forcing a sale of assets. An acquittal will only likely then happen. But I can’t see Six Flags (they already own Darien Lake) bidding. SeaWorld might, but not with the indictment and trial in progress.
Another thing: when MarineLand opened, it was the theme park for all of western NY and the Golden Horsehoe area, which had a catchment area of around 13-14 million. However, the opening of Canada’s Wonderland and Darien Lake for the 1981 season took nearly all of that catchment away. Funtime (later Premier Parks/Six Flags) and Taft (later Paramount and now Cedar Fair) have invested in those parks. The Holer family have not have had the deep pockets to invest in MarineLand.

@@CanobieCoaster We sure can dream! Also and yeah I think you all are missing the point, all though you all make good points but i don’t necessarily agree heres why. I think by Sea World buying the park they can make it more non Marine, it has the attraction foundation to give it less of a Marine feel and more of a theme park. I also don’t think competition wouldn’t really be that big of a problem sure you got Six Flags Darien Lake and Six Flags Great Escape but there not really massive parks to cause big time competition. Also sure Canadas Wonderland is only an hour away it’s just there’s not really anything in the Niagara Falls area witch I don’t think they would really need to complete.
I also think it should be for both animals, theming and coasters kinda like a Bush Gardens Tampa style of park, because I think those Animals need better care yeah sure Sea World doesn’t have a very good history Ik. Maybe what I was thinking of is that Sea world can sell it to like an organization that is great with animals or hire them to help redeem there image even more. I don’t know how that would work but I guess y’all might get the picture. I don’t know if they make Sky towers anymore but I agree I think an observation of some kind would be perfect for that park.
Lastly I think Sea World would bring in a lot more people because of how the name just sticks it would be great for business and great for the park but aye that’s just my thoughts.

She is the only orca and has been alone over 12 years now, has outlived all her calves and is sick/suicidal. If you look up Free Kiska on TH-cam, you’ll see her banging her head against the tank wall because she’s suicidal and very alone. She needs to be rescued and sent to one of those ocean tanks, where a good and large part of the ocean is fenced off and after about 2 years, they’re released into the wild. Wild orca pods have accepted orcas that were raised in captivity as well as released orcas from captivity creating their own pods as well!
Seal lions eyes are burnt out from the chlorine, the dolphins skins are floating away and there are about 50 beluga whales in ONE small tank! We must go after the Canadian government and their laws for marine animals. MarineLand already had issues with their land animals which were checked out by officials but not the marine animals.

I could not bring myself to enjoy my time here knowing that Kiska spent her final years completely alone in every sense of the word. She was literally the only captive orca left in the entirety of canada, and to my knowledge, they made no effort to move her to a location where she could thrive even just a tiny bit more in her final years. Miami seaquarium is making an effort to do that with Tokitae, so why couldn’t marineland do that with Kiska. It’s just so unfortunate. That Magic one of my favorite all-time flat rides. And Dragon Mountain house one of my favorite all-time coaster experiences (the final long drop in complete tunnel darkness).
I like the spread out midways. Lots of green space makes a beautiful park and makes it even more laid back.
They do miss out on revenue from lack of food locations. It seems this short term cost cutting measure costs revenue in the long run.
They also miss out on creating a great space on top of the hill with Sky Screamer by having nothing else there.
This park would really benefit from another coaster, a flume and some family transportation rides (train, skyway). Those rides would round it out perfectly.
