Lime mortar, I'd say, bonding the stones of the wall so therefore in order to avoid damp inside you'll have to render the walls with Lime plaster. Cement plaster will trap the damp in the walls thereby promoting it within the house itself. There are more qualified people on here than me in this regard but I'd never use cement plaster over the old house walls.

This is my absolute dream life! I live in Tayside, and as a kid my family stayed in a cottage in Glenshee for a week, and its always stuck with me.
My ideal life is a little cottage in the Highlands or on one of the islands, a nice big log fire, some books and then the rest of the world can do whatever it wants!🥰

Some of the scenery is so beautiful it doesn’t look real - almost like Victorian paintings. You’re right - there’s just so much to see - looking forward to seeing it in the coming months. I loved that you cooked down the water for salt. I value self-suffiency - I’m a gardener - preserver - pickler. Have a good week. Cheers from east coast Canada.

In Greece we gather the salt and we annually make a can of sardines and use in fermenting produce. There is so much ignorance in the old ways, even if people do not choose this way of life it is so important for us to know!

Have you considered adding a lean-to style roof across the back of the house, then running the gutter so that it drops at the end of the house instead of in the middle like it currently is? This method would keep all but the water entering from the retaining wall out of your back alleyway.

I’m almost 76 and I totally agree with you. Living in Northern California since the early 70’s and stuck now as I have a son, his wife, and 4 wonderful grandchildren. If it wasn’t for them I would sell and leave here and move to another state that was more like what my mum had as a young woman. But travel is out of question due to financial constraints. So I live vicariously through others. I love this channel and all its beauty.

Very wise words. If you render the back of the house please use lime mortar, cement mortar would trap moisture and lime mortar allows the stones to breath. Scott did you know on birch trees you get some stuff that grows on the bark and it is called Chaga I can not explain it you would have to look it up also if one takes the bark of the birch tree you can burn it down and get birch oil and the birch bark can be used as a fire starter. Hope you find this interesting. Katie that was very interesting with the salt and it looks beautiful in its raw state. Have a lovely day. The scenery is spectacular.

We’ve also recently bought a traditional Scottish cottage in need of a fair bit of work. I can’t recommend enough the “Inform Friday” series on Historic Environment Scotland’s TH-cam channel. They have been testing for decades different modern and traditional techniques and materials for restoring traditional buildings and they have loads of case studies. Best wishes with your cottage, we love ours too and can’t believe our good luck in getting it, despite the hard living while we make it lovely once again.

Cement has one attribute that is not great for damp conditions because it absorbs and wicks moisture.
Lime mix will be better than cement in some places, it regulates moisture and fungi/mold from becoming bad.
The old castle builders used a mix of sand, clay and lime for stonework. Lime and clay for walls, with some people adding shredded hemp fibres for better insulation.

In your first video there was a creature that looked like a snake crawling in your garden but no one has ever spoken about it. Do you know what it was? Keep doing what you’re doing - loving each and every episode 0:45

It's called a slow worm. We'd never seen one before moving here! A type of lizard, oddly, without legs. There are loads of them. Thank you for the encouragement and for watching. Kx

Hi Katie watching and listening to you about the origin of salt was really interesting….I use sea salt and really enjoy the taste. Much love to you both 🤗🤗

Lime mortar is a much better choice for old houses than concrete or modern renders. Might be worth a look.

Thank you Katie for sharing that history with us. It’s always been my favorite subject, especially since I met my Scottish husband when I was in the US Navy, I envy you the peace and tranquility. Also, the work you’ve done is magnificent. We’re you in the education field?

No they are both antiques restorers so they know the history of the items they restore. In that sense yes, in a certain way they are involved deeply in history but are also very educated as well.

A winter sweater for himself. I'm sure you'll see him wearing it once it's all done in a few months! I enjoyed the salt-making process too. Kx
