Your sword is called a Zweihänder also called a Bidenhänder, primarily in use during the early decades of the 16th century. Thank you Hans for sharing your exciting opportunities to bring back the lost history for everyone to enjoy once again. :) you are very lucky to be able to experience this type of work! Hope there is a lot more for you in the future and the super sweet finds. For us the excitement is in finding the target then the feel good we get turning it over for the world to see. You are doing an excellent job my Friend :)

      +Hunter RedBlood hello my friend..
that's right! how do you know? are you interested in old swords?
It's my pleasure to share my digs with you all! thank you for watching my videos! I worked hard for this opportunity so it's not so much about luck. . I had to convince the archaeologists that I'm trustworthy...the team of archaeologists I'm working with already included me in future excavations so I'm hoping to be able to present you more nice finds :)
thank you for your kind words!

Wonderous...the things you are able to uncover, Hans. Thank you for sharing your time and finds with us. I, for one, am glad we no longer go to war with swords and arrows, long knives and spears. Be well my friend, Johann.

Not me. In the Middle Ages, war was more of a game for the nobility. Only the peasants who could not run away fast enough were killed. The knights had "indestructible" armor. And ransoms were constantly being paid. The battles were incredibly short and so were wars. Not the constant bloodbath of today's wars where you don't even see your enemies. Skill, Strength and Honor have been replaced by everyone's trigger finger.

Amazing opportunity to be able to volunteer on that dig. Indy...I mean Hans....we all know you are there in the Teutoberg Forest hoping to find the lost eagle standards of the Roman legions defeated there! Oh...I also believe the pommel also functioned as a hand stop, so that when gripping (especially if your hands were sweaty or bloody) the handle your hand wouldn't slide off as you were withdrawing your sword. I really appreciate you sharing the dig with us. I was hoping you'd be allowed to.

      +Greg Kerr hello greg,
yes it is and i don't take it for granted! haha. . that would be a cool find! you are definitely right about the other function you described. . .the pommel was also used to hit the enemy with it as every part of the sword was a weapon.

Hans... What a marvelous experience for you to be included on these digs ... It tells us a lot about your character to be trusted to participate. I look forward to future discoveries, and am very interested to discover what is written on the ring. You are correct, the old roads avoid the deep rivers and streams. My wife and I went 4x4 driving on an old highway. It went up into the hills away from the many deep watercourses across a more direct route. Up in the hills the streams are just trickles starting out. The modern road has many bridges built.

I'm much interested in metal detecting, especially old stuff. Never had the chance to do it, except on a beach once or twice. fantastic video Hans as usual, your finds of history in context would be extremely valuable in forming a detailed archaeological map of chronology around the objects you have found at the site you are working on, accolades should be heaped upon you for your efforts and skill with a detector. As you are bringing back the silent irretrievably lost past back to fascinate and speak to us again. When looking at these lost items the minds eye can image the very moment they were dropped and the probable circumstances that placed them there. You make the best videos with your style and fantastic camera, because you take us with you as if we're actually there. I have seen a lot of other detecting films and none can surpass your efforts. So looking forward to more of your finds, keep it up mate.
And remember it's fate not luck that brings the best finds.

    Moin Hans,
. .they were also called "gassenhauer" which gruffly translated means "ginnel hewer" as they were used to hit alleys into the enemies lines of battle. . .

Hans, I'm so pleased to see some much anticipated highlights from your archaeological connections. The sword pommel is stunning and the battle axe is a real beauty. Although it's a challenge to imagine the lives of the people who carried those weapons and depended upon them to stay alive, finding their tools today is truly worthy of GPS note. I'm glad you were there to find them and I look forward to more from my fortunate friend. Well done. :)

+TerraGermania Getting cut is a bummer Hans, but it speaks well for the quality of the blade, doesn't it? It seems eerie that after so many years, the archaic killing tool is still drawing blood. Another thought I had was, since the pommel is a counterweight for the length of the blade, I wonder if it's possible to envision the size of the sword by extrapolation of balance, adding some weight for the nut that secured it to the tang of the blade. Too much thinking, probably. :-)

    • @TerraGermaniaTG
      @TerraGermaniaTG  8 ปีที่แล้ว

yes it does! and you are right it was a strange to think that I was the first one after hundreds of years to be hurt by it again . .haha

This has to be my favorite video so far. Even though there wasn’t much detecting, the quality of the finds is just incredible. It’s interesting to compare the coins found here with the ones you normally find- these look so much older, but still there is so much detail on them! I love the battle axes also. If only I could go back in time to see them in use, it had to be quite a show. That replica sword you had is so badass!

I had one of the best detecting times there. I miss detecting these enchanting woods.

Really enjoyed that. A video from a different aspect. You are showing a great example for the hobby of responsible metal detecting. And yeah.....you need to get a pin pointer for woodland detecting now....: )
