I am a Southerner who happens to be black. This song is for all people who grew up similar situations. I grew up in Middle Tennessee. Whenever I hear this song it makes me think of my youth. I love this song. David Allen Coe is one of the great singer/writers in American history. His music is stripped down, raw, and simplistic...just like the small town America I grew up in.
Amen man they removed it from Spotify for using the word in a derogatory way but the remake of it sounds so off so you gotta come to TH-cam for the original
God bless you brethren & thank you for existing & being here, from Dixieland C.S.A kindly I say God almighty & Jesus Christ keep you & your's alike always Sir. Sincerely, This southern Mixed race man, ~Paul

love this song!!!!!!!!! when i was a kid dac came thru our town and stopped at our house, i mean seriously parked his bus in front of our house, he knew my moms daddy. he came in our house gave us a record that he signed and i sat on his lap. i was only 2 and half but i remember this. ) coolest thing ever happened. love all his songs
Oh god I had to laugh. There's this sniveling little warning, "The following content has been identified by the TH-cam community as being potentially offensive or graphic. Viewer discretion is advised." Oh god, yes, my virgin ears must be protected! Never mind I'm 55 years old and had my first ride in the back of a police car at age 12 and my mama used to say "fuck" without blushing, (may she rest in peace). But oh yes, the precious TH-cam community has determined that I may be offended. YT sure has gone downhill since they sold out to Google, and America sure has gone downhill, as well.
You said a mouth full. I'm 54 and I can remember when America and American's were different. I remember when we were united because we were taught love of country at a young age by standing in school and saying the pledge every morning, but today's generation wouldn't know anything about that.
I was born and raised in and love the South. I love David Alan Coe and I fly the Confederate Flag. But, I am NOT a Racist! I have MANY Black Friends, that I have invited into my Home and they have eaten with me, at my dinner table. Would a Racist do that? NO! If the Confederate Flag means Racism to you, that's YOUR problem! That's not what it means to me! If you can't understand my thinking, I'm sorry.
'Drank pearl in a can and Jack Daniels black, chewed tobacca from a mail patch sack'....'coal burnin stove no natural gas, if that ain't country I'll kiss your ass'...thats some of the most bad ass lyrics in country music ever! I guarantee you.
If you’re so offended by this music, don’t listen! Nowadays people are offended by everything. It makes me sick! Like I said, I don’t listen! Have you ever listened to rap music? They said the most vile things about white people yet TH-cam says nothing. That’s racism!!
What is offensive about him describing his childhood and this a tribute to his dad/ I grew up poor but proud of who I am, and we had a wood burning stove, no natural gas, and he is right, if that aint country, and no he is not a racist
Funny thing about this paradoxical icon. DAC may have, in my opinion, the finest combination of voice perfection and song writing. He has written several thousands of songs, which sadly, as one who has seen him eleven times, are what he now sings at his concerts (when he shows up, no bs. Despite his reputation, he is a gentleman, as my mother and I found out in Clarksburg, WV recently. He is also not a racist, as he has made clear in his own words multiple times. It was a dfferent time, folks.
@mvanalyne , I love the music of David Allen Coe, and listen to it often. I'm from maine and we are like very country up here, I just have one thing more to say, the south has a reason to be prideful, but the csa lost 150 years ago, and it ain't looking good for the south to rise a gain. You lost and that's the end of it. Good luck trying to rise again, but it isn't looking godd for you!
I met Johnny Cash, in 1980-at the Pelfrey/Carter family Reunion,held in Maysville,Oklahoma..I just about DIED-when,My Mother,Ramona L, Jenkins,Told me-June Carter -Cash,was,my 3rd cousin!! Small world,for sure!!!

@nascargurl14 I was blessed to meet Charlie Daniels once as well years ago. My buddy asked him if he had given up on all the booze and drugs, Charlie leaned back in his chair patted his belly and said : "I gave up all that stuff that made me see funny things and made me eat a lot of junk food but you can see I still like my liquor and beer" and laughed his ass off lol.
@GotMud85 It's all different as the generations go on, I do agree that modern music has gone more mainstream though. have you heard the country music from the generation before them? doesn't even sound like country. different generations different taste.
@nascargurl14 I met David Allen Coe in Rock Hill SC once. He was a nice fella, big as hell! I asked him where I could get a copy of his X-rated stuff and he said "I don't know what your talking about, I never did any dirty songs!" lol. But a little bit later he said he had grandkids and was trying to clean up his act.
this takes me back to a place in time when denim prison shirts hung on the clothesline, and we ate rhubarb with sugar.... no pictures hung on the wall unless they came from a magazine. And welfare meant the old widow woman who we used to stand in line with, once a month at the Grange Hall, and help her carry back her groceries, where they gave her flour and such to make bread and even real butter to put on it. She would make it and bake it, and give us a slice for helping. ,,,poor times all
It's country rural living. The South doesn't have a Monopoly on poor White folks and country living. Too many Southerners think once you cross the Mason Dixon line it's all New York City! There's a hell of a lot of country up North!
@SADERSMM64 They do it because there ain't many like us(teenagers and everything) that actually like this music. He's showing that he's a dying breed. Of course many do it cause they want to be included too. Who knows.
I agree with GotMud85. When I think of country I think of my Granddad who used to listen to old 45's of Hank Williams and Willie Nelson. He was tough as nails and I think alot of that old music just sounds tougher and grittier like real country should. New country's gay to me.
@palehorseridder I know what you mean, I did lots of research and the confederate flag had way more value than what people make it out to be these days.
I've been a serviceman for 30 years doing service calls and I'm Indian Irish and when I met your house I see just green the money I need to make to pay my light bill
@GotMud85 I agree, though there are a FEW new country artists I like. Like Justin Moore,Josh Thompson, Josh Turner, and a few others. But I can agree that half the shit Nashville passes as country ain't country at all.
i love all the yankee n southern remarks-yall do know david allen coe is from ohio, yeah i know that might make your head explode, but truth is truth, guys from not far from me,southern ohio-sorry to bust your bubble, but your rooting for a "yankee" here ;)
man i love this song i not be that old but i got all types of scars from working on old junk and rusty trucks, been covered in grease even since i got my backhoe. it seems that the hotter the day the move likely something to break and you cuss the heat. been having to work with my hands and grinding them to the bone just to pay the bills. but i am god dam proud to be country and not a city slicker pile of shit.
I think this song was meant to let everyone know that poor white folks had a rough life as well.. BTW just about everything he said about junkyard/wood cutting pertains to my childhood
@mightyodin7474 Bwahahahahaha, amen! Besides, DAC is one mean SOB I wouldn't mess with. I would love to see him in concert, he has come where I am, but the hubby won't take me-says not unless a few friends go, gets pretty rowdy w/ the bikers & such & he says he won't take me in there LOL (he's been in a few fights seeing him before.....then again the hubby never turns away from a good fight :) )
On 2/18/11,I sang this for the first and last time at a Karaoke session at a pub not too far from my home. The DJ,who meant to do this some time earlier, deleted this song from his database due to complaints involving this song at different establishments at earlier times. The DJ,who is NOT prejudiced, received complaints from black patrons because of the N-word heard here. I sang "digger" because it appeared on the screen.
It’s sad how hard it is to find this version of this song anymore.... censored by the overlords at Spotify and obviously here now with the “graphic content” warning 🤦♂️ our freedom of speech is doomed

He stays true to his roots. That's why I love his music, every song tells a story. :)
You have to view it as art, nothing more. I personally think its a great song that describes old country living.

@arhuxtable I think he uses it in the same context as Huckleberry Finn. As a hard working black man in post slavery South I think.
