When people ask me: "name an LP that is simply outstanding from the late 60's but no one mentions anymore" and my answer is always: Spooky Two by Spooky Tooth.
Right? Why is this album so slept on? No filler, and they give each track their all. Amazing soulful feel throughout. Jimmy Miller nailed the production. Judas Priest clearly liked it. I know that Pierre Henry album after it set Spooky Tooth back. And I think the fact that Gary Wright did Dream Weaver and that became "the Wayne's World song" didn't help. But tis album is a bloody classic in my book. Yet another reason to love Island Records.
commenting again on this great band, they got me through my teenage years, the intensity and prowess as well as the angst in their lyrics never fall to grab at the heart. Wish there was more of this incarnation of Spooky Tooth, so soulful.
....as someone with an extensive classic rock collection l can verify there are only a handful of albums whereas truly each & every song on the record is very good & this one qualifies in that category
"24-7 Psychedelic Radio" (on Tunein and probably other radio apps)... heck, I ended up here cuz I just heard a track from the "Art" (pre Spooky Tooth band) LP on the station earlier.
As good as it gets-So much energy and emotion. That does not exist in music anymore. 1969-probably the single greatest year in the history of music. Much the same way as 1939 was the single greatest year of Movies. Think of all the music fro m that year-The first 2 ZEP albums, Rolling Stones, Beatles, First Black Sabbath, Santana. CCR, the Doors, Pink Floyd.on and on...
"Does not exist in music anymore?" Wow. You sound like you're trapped in a time long past. Here's a great example of how wrong you are, albeit from 2007. th-cam.com/video/oraMv_V6V1s/w-d-xo.html
Dunno about that. What about Then Play On, Blind Faith, The Nice. Let It Bleed, and The Allman Bros and Mott the Hoople's first albums ? Having said that, Spooky Two is definitely in that list.
Spooky Two is amazing, outstanding stuff! But, best album in a year that gave us, Abbey Road, Let It Bleed, Led Zep I & II, Blind Faith, 3 GREAT CCR albums, The Band, etc., etc. , just to name a few? I can't say it was THE best, but one of many great ones for sure......
This is completely sick. Couldn't agree more with Mr. 75yellowraven that 1969 was a banner year in rock music. How good were these guys. Love Mike Harrison's voice. Just spectacular. I'll just say this is hard to beat. I do think Gavin DeGraw out of the current crop of singer-songwriters is a genuine soulful talent. Check him out singing live with the PS 22 kids choir here on the Tube. Gives a bit of hope going forward. Thanks for the awesome post.
As much as I like zeppelin purple sabbath ect, spooky two album is up there with them albums from 69 70 also sssssssh and Stonehendge by tan years after, great British bands !
@@andrewartobjects That album turned me on to a whole load of really weird stuff. 14/6d if memory serves me well! I still play my very worn copy occasionally.
One of the most frivolous law suits, but kind of sad events too was when two kids committed suicide who were listening to Judas Priest cover this song. Apparently they did not know that Judas Priest didn't write this so then they tried to say that between the vocal lines the singer muttered "do it" which somehow subliminally caused them to commit suicide. Then Rob Halford the singer sang the song showing how that sound that sounded like "do it" was just him ending the loud notes he was singing. He demonstrated in the court that he was singing "Better by you better than meeeeah". The Judge then dismissed the case. If this made them commit suicide it would only be because it's a sad song, but how many sad songs are there, and although this is quite dramatic it's not as depressing as parts of Pink Floyd 'Dogs'.
I remember that case. It was around that time that Ozzy got sued for the same thing, except it was the song, _Suicide Solution,_ written by his bassist, Bob Daisley, that was found on the cassette tape that the kid had been listening to. I always thought that if any band might get sued for supposedly trying to convince their listers to kill themselves, it would have been Blue Öyster Cult over the song, _Don't Fear the Reaper._ Thankfully, that never happened...
Explosive energy in this incredible performance by this sadly underrated band. But considering the competition circa 1969,what can you say? Thanks for the post.
Amazing song! Spooky the Judas Priest version is great too, but this is the really pure sound, i can't heard the "subliminal messages" "do it" that's a bullshit!
Who'd thought the guy from Foreigner and the guy who sang Dreamweaver are responsible for the song the Judas Priest covered that got two guys blow their faces off
TheWattfour I think he is speaking of Mick Jones, who was only in the '73-'74 reformed Spooky Tooth. I did not know that about Mike Kellie. Hey, and don't forget about Ridley going to Humble Pie.
Gary Wright was from the U.S. and was a student in Germany when he got word about possible meeting up the band. Good move, as he became the primary songwriter for the group.
He quickly left after Spooky Two. The more I listen to this album, the more I feel connections with Humble Pie's first and second album. Clearly when I listen to a song like "Feelin' bad".
Posers covers? Give your head a shake Richard! Judas Priest do the song justice and with total respect. If you need a lesson in posers destroying a cover song, just listen to Metallica's version of Whiskey In The Jar.
I had almost completely forgotten about Spooky Tooth and have been listening to many of their songs. They were a decent bunch of musicians but their song writing was sadly lacking. There was so much competition then from brilliant bands so no wonder they couldn't make the grade.
When people ask me: "name an LP that is simply outstanding from the late 60's but no one mentions anymore" and my answer is always: Spooky Two by Spooky Tooth.
"I broke her heart she broke my jaw" is a good one too👍
Isn't it just the opposite: "She broke my heart...... so I busted your Jaw"?@@1bryanestes

RIP Gary Wright. This remains a classic, and this is the definitive performance of it IMO

Mighty Baby 1st album falls into that category. (Formerly The Acrion)
Very sad to hear of the death of Gary Wright. One of the greats in a great band.
I am 66 yrs old and just now discovering this great band! Thanks for posting.
Between Luther's tone and Mike Harrison's voice......This fantastic version is really worth listening to over and over.
I’ve thought for over 40 years this was a Judas Priest original
Mike Harrison, what a great voice. RIP
Great Song Please check out Spooky Tooth - The Last Puff Album Review on my channel

They are forever in my own Hall of fame
Listening to these old tunes makes me miss my youth, brings back memories
Free, Spooky Tooth, Traffic, Jethro Tull, Fairport Convention, John Martyn, etc. Island was great!
Also, not forgetting, Dr Strangely Strange!
RIP Mike Harrison. A great musician.
1969 was a good year for rock music!
Well played, close to the studio version !
R.I.P. Gary Wright ! We will not forget …..

1967 is the greatest for astounding albums and unforgettable singles
Love all Spooky tooth till now.! Big hearts for them. Love Karin
Judas Priest knew to redo this song. It’s a great tune!
This is a very cool video of a Great Band. Give a listen to their Spooky Two album. Wonderful.
Spooky Two - best album of 1969
Dunno about that. What about Then Play On, Blind Faith, The Nice. Let It Bleed, and The Allman Bros and Mott the Hoople's first albums ? Having said that, Spooky Two is definitely in that list.
A gold classic. If you weren't high when you put it on the turntable, you were by the end of side 2. Hard to top Gary Wright and pals then.
In the Court of the Crimson King... and it really isn't even close. That being said, Spooky Two is top 5 for sure
Thank you so much for posting - "any live Spooky is good Spooky" - please keep it coming
Both versions of this song are amazing.
Fantastic!
RIP Mike Harrison.
Very sad news.....
When they all locked in with their voices is incredible
This is awesome !!!
a mis 54 años oigo una banda que me parece genial. Raíces de muchas bandas gringas tal vez. Saludos y gracias
Bought this album in 69 when studying for my A levels. What a great time to be 17 yrs old.!
just a timeless classic
Just love the way Luther has 'heavied-up' the original riff in this performance.
Loved t at 15 ... still love it at 63.
very good band

Joe Mystery I'm confused by you starting of saying the piece is "sick" then extol how great the era was ? This is very confusing !!
"sick" as in awesome :-)
Mike we love you wherever you are....
A very good band!!!!
Tengo muchos favoritos y están incluidos. Verlos es pura pasión
As much as I like zeppelin purple sabbath ect, spooky two album is up there with them albums from 69 70 also sssssssh and Stonehendge by tan years after, great British bands !

incredible proto metal

"You Broke My Heart So I Busted Your Jaw" 😮😮
It's taken me so long to find this. THANKS
So much pain in the music from that era.It hits me in the gut.

Great song
I’ve said this as many times as I can across several TH-cam films. Why isn’t Mike Harrison up there with Paul Rogers etc as a great rock/soul voice?
always dug the Judas Priest version on Stained Class - only recently found out it was a cover
They made covers of this and Fleetwood Mac‘s „The Green Manalishi“ - both from 1969.
✨😮🎶I just found out now, here to check it out! Dig both.👍👍✨
I think this was filmed in Steve Winwood's infamous barn.
Rip Mike Kellie
sounds great 👍

Great video! Thank you very much for sharing that, Andy!
Thanks for posting this; great footage. Still got your LP "Magician" ! Greetz
Great band
Happy 80th Birthday Gary Wright!
Mike Harrison!
Explosive energy in this incredible performance by this sadly underrated band. But considering the competition circa 1969,what can you say? Thanks for the post.
They stood out to me, even in 1969 when I bought the album
Never forget this song
Simply fantastic,
Priest did great job with this
Noch mit Andy-Lleigh Stevens am „Baldwyn-Burns“ Bass,
Luther Grosvenor , leider ein unterschätzter Gitarrist !
God listens to you in the sky Mike...✌️
Amazing song! Spooky the Judas Priest version is great too, but this is the really pure sound, i can't heard the "subliminal messages" "do it" that's a bullshit!

Damn, stupid court in the U.S., in the 80's!?
Judas Priest, judged by subliminal messages!
🖕🏻🤔 🤪
Divine song !
Always thought Judas Preist wrote this song...First time I heard this version.
Best band in 69 foRealzzzzz
10 times better live version 💚💚💚💚💚
RIP Gary Wright
60s 70s right on man!
FarOut Man !!! So Cool !!!
Excellent live version - much better than the studio rendition.
Always thought Spooky Tooth were soooooooooooooo much better than on their albums. And the albums were good..
R.I.P Gary Wtight
The best versiòn ...judas priest album stained class
Nahhh their cover was super weak
Who'd thought the guy from Foreigner and the guy who sang Dreamweaver are responsible for the song the Judas Priest covered that got two guys blow their faces off
I think they'd have blown their faces off anyway. They were kinda heading in that direction.
chris hutt Which one ended up in Foreigner? Mike Kellie went on to The Only Ones too.
TheWattfour Plus Luther Grosvener went on to Mott The Hoople as Ariel Bender.
TheWattfour I think he is speaking of Mick Jones, who was only in the '73-'74 reformed Spooky Tooth. I did not know that about Mike Kellie. Hey, and don't forget about Ridley going to Humble Pie.
It was drugs, not the music.
Great, vastly underrated band.
Love spooky tooth but people forget about Uriah Heep also
Heavy metal
I heard the"Do it" massage
Fantástic. In Portuguese: Do caralho.
Hello Andy. Did you play bass on Spooky Tooth Two? Did you ever play keyboards on any of the Spooky Tooth albums. Thanks for posting.
No to both
Dennis GarryOwen No, it was Greg Ridley.
They were from Carlisle. Who knew !
Gary Wright was from the U.S. and was a student in Germany when he got word about possible meeting up the band. Good move, as he became the primary songwriter for the group.
GREAT 🇩🇪
kinda Savoy Brownish riff there. love it.
It predicts Jack Kevorkian by more than two decades. Judas Priest got in trouble over their cover of this song.
Nice Burns Bass.
I thought Priest wrote this lol
Još jedna uspješnica od Judas Priest koja je ustvari obrada... U ovom slučaju original pripada grupi Spooky Tooth...
Ja nisam čuo ovu nikad prije.
♥♥♥
Ridley had gone by this time?
Rick Hall & Don Harris Band did an excellent version of this.
He quickly left after Spooky Two. The more I listen to this album, the more I feel connections with Humble Pie's first and second album. Clearly when I listen to a song like "Feelin' bad".
Feelin Bad is sooooooooo great!!! Vocals sound like a choir…like a lot of Spooky Tooth songs. HELLUVA BAND!!!!!!!!!
They doe it.
ifn I could only get some investors!!
To each his own opinion, I'll take Spooky Tooth over Judas Priest any day.
Right on, i would rather hear bands original music over poser covers anyday.
Posers covers? Give your head a shake Richard! Judas Priest do the song justice and with total respect. If you need a lesson in posers destroying a cover song, just listen to Metallica's version of Whiskey In The Jar.
Justin Case ooh roasted !!
Well the two Judas priest fans hated the cover so much they shot themselves!!
rbf1967 I know, only one of them died.
I had almost completely forgotten about Spooky Tooth and have been listening to many of their songs. They were a decent bunch of musicians but their song writing was sadly lacking. There was so much competition then from brilliant bands so no wonder they couldn't make the grade.
Tip to you young camera guys, always record the guitar player !!!
