Mariel’s story hit me so hard. I went through the same thing at a job for almost 5 years. I finally got out and the weight that fell off my shoulders was insane. So glad she got out if that and got to a better space ❤️❤️❤️ I hope this inspires other people to do the same if they’re feeling like that

I relate so much with what Mariel talked about. Many Asia-born Asian employers need cultural competency training badly. It's absurd to expect everyone here to go 100% their way when in reality they should at least meet halfway to go by what is normal in the states while being in the states with US laws and culture.

That’s called a General manager of a restaurant. Where multiple hats. You do the day to day tasks, Human Resources, and administrative work, at the same time you have to translate business demands in a way that your team is inspired, and also learn to lead up to improve your companies culture.

Yeah, Japanese work long hours but they also get less done. It's all acting too appear hard working. Inefficient waste of time. Trust me, I used to for a Japanese comany. It's a stupid work culture

I definitely believe sitting at a desk for long hours, doesn't equate to productivity. For me, I do things in 30 minute spurts. If I'm allowed to walk around and do other stuff, I think I do better work. Personally, I'm sick of desk jobs. I almost rather do some manual labor work, as long as I'm not treated like a slave.

When you guys were talking about phrases, idioms and “white people humor” I related 100% I work in corporate America and I am one of the few people of color that works for my company and like Mariel I did not know a lot of the phrases/idioms my white manager would say sometimes.

I will say these are my personal favorite. I can relate with Mariel in some way even though I've just been luckier with my experience. I just had my last day of work today since I had planned to move to another city, even though surviving the last couple of months were dreadful.

Had a similar experience, toxic, clique-y, and my wife saw me just defeated and depressed every day as I came home. Gained weight, slept poorly. When I left even without a pay increase I felt happier, my wife saw I felt better, I lost the weight I gained. Toxic work drains and *it is* from top down, the head of the organization plays favourites and will gladly F you over to save their own ass.

I 100% feel that convo y'all had about not wanting to quit a bad work situation because it feels like giving up. I was raised the same way, actually in that situation right now where I work for a "not so pleasant big corporation" who shall not be named, but yeah unpleasant work scenario, feeling constantly like did I really go through university getting a degree and masters and what not just to come be treated like nothing at the bottom of the corporate ladder. But there's something in me, I guess from that old school mentality from our parents that keeps telling me to not quit, stay n fight and overcome but gotta admit each month I constantly find myself at that crossroads.
But yeah keep up the great content man! 👊🏿💯, Your podcast is one of the few that I refuse to listen to whilst multitasking and passively doing other stuff like at work etc I make sure to tune in, properly sit down and digest these conversations always whether it's the deeper conversations or just the funny light hearted episodes there's always gems 🙏🏿

A lot of countries come out here to California and do their business like back at home not realizing the states worker laws that they have broken a lot of them do and eventually will get fined and the State will not give any leeway this state gives employees more rights than any other.
