Thank you for this informative video. Being in the West I do admit I have gone out and bought a toner, an essence and a serum all from Korean brands with the thought in mind of a toner cleanses any residue left over, an essence helps absorb the product better, a serum targets imperfections and helps to improve skin then an eye cream and moisturizer. This was an informative video to know my 4 different bottles in the cabinet can be interchangeable and are essentially the same product.

Yes! Ok so I made the mistake of ordering my favorite Korean toner off Amazon because I was out of it and didn’t want to wait for it to be shipped overseas. What I got was not my favorite “make prem” toner. It had been tampered with. So I improvised with a plethora of essences I needed to use quickly before they expired. What I learned is I got the same results using essences between my skincare steps as a toner. You just validated my opinion on this. Thank you, as always, for your helpful information! Also, my order containing the ISA KNOX - Uv Sun Pro 365 Extreme Sun Fluid will be here this week and I cannot wait to try it. I hope it works out since it comes as a set of 2.

Usually it happens like this: a brand starts using a term, their product is successful > competitors steal the idea and name their product using the same term in hope to replicate their success. In Korea's case "essence" was first inspired by Japanese beauty brands while "serum/ampoule/concentrate" come from European brands.
Well about 15 years ago most Korean products titled serum or essence were both for after toner. More recently there’s a difference between whether that serum or essence is made for before toner usage or after toner usage. Some notable before toner ones are SKII treatment essence , tatcha the essence and sulwhasoo first activating serum. This concept of using a product before toner is still very new to the western market. I personally use two products before the toner. I’d use a very watery essence/serum then a less watery one then onto toner
For me, they're the same thing, but in a way (I'm not saying it's "completely" or 100%, it's just that in some cases) essences are the lightest in terms of texture and contain fermented ingredients. They are often labeled with the word "First" on the packaging. But I see many toners share the same texture and ingredients. Haha. In general, if it's a good item, then I'm gonna use it. Thanks for enlightening me/us. Love your videos as usual. Have a nice day.
The names doesn’t matter. It depends on what a particular formula is made to do. For the longest time ever everyone only knew of serums that go after the toner, especially in the west it’s usually called serum. However in the last 15 years or so I noticed Korean skincare sometimes use the name essence but still it’s an item made for after toner. It’s only more recently there are formulas created for use prior to toner. These also share the names depending on the brand. For example the famous SK II treatment essence. That’s for before toner usage. Or Tatcha the essence, also for before toner. Sulwhasoo has a before toner product as well and it’s called first activating serum. By that same brand , they also something called renewing serum but that’s for after toner. So names are labeled interchangeably but product isn’t.
Thank you so much! As an Italian myself, I loved the 6:026:20 segment! But I know that most websites that sell Korean Skincare are in English, so this was very interesting to learn. I just began my journey into Korean Skincare, so again, thank you!

Thank you! I honestly hate how these toxic myths continue to affect the perception of Korean beauty abroad. This industry has so much offer, but all I see people abroad talking about is the 10 step myth, gimmicky ingredients that haven't been trendy for at least 10 good years in Korea, and a bunch of made-up rules that make no sense at all 😩
Odile can you pls recommend anti-aging creams/lotions for oily skin? All the anti-aging creams I know are rich and only suit dry skin types. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated
Hi Odile! You are the reason why I am into Hanbang Skin Care now. You showed me a whole different skin care world. You're very knowledgeable with this. I am confused tho. I bought Donginbi and I hope you can explain what is Emulsion and Softener. Also, should I still use toner with this? Because in their line that I bought it's only the Essence, Softener, Emulsion and Cleanser. I'm confused.
Thank you so much 🙏 In short: "Softener" is another name for toner and "Emulsion" is another name for lotion (a liquid cream basically). The long explanation is that back in the day, cosmetics in Korea were called using native Korean words, over the years those words were gradually replaced by foreign words ("toner", "lotion") transliterated in Korean letters, but some brands targeting an older audience still use those native Korean words (because older people prefer using them over English loan words) and they often get translated as "softener" or "balancer" in English to keep some difference from the equivalent English words but the concepts are the same. The etymology of the native Korean words can also be traced back to concepts of Traditional Korean Medicine, so that's another reason why Hanbang skincare brands still use those words. I briefly talked about the meaning of those words in this part of my introduction to Hanbang if it helps themonodist.com/2021/12/17/introduction-to-korean-hanbang-skincare/#terminology There's no particular order to layer cosmetics, it depends on the formulas of the single products. In general go from more watery to more oily and you should be OK! I think Donginbi also provides a recommended order of use for each of their lines on their website but if you still can't find it let me know!
Hahahaha per una volta ho pubblicato secondo schedule, ma il video di due settimane fa secondo me è stato snobbato dell'algoritmo perché ha ricevuto 2 commenti in croce 😬 Grazie sempre del supporto!
Hi there , can you please talk about bags under the eyes and the products you recommend,? I never heard about this in Corea beauty, and I think your opinion and knowledge will be very helpful for those including me who are constantly fighting this problem ,,,,,,, thanks
I’ve noticed now there are basically “essences” or “serums” of “concentrates” that are either formulated for “before toner” or for “after toner” usage, which is what most westerns are used to. For me I use two of these before the toner. One is a very watery one such as o hui first essence , followed by history of whoo bichup first essence. Then after toner , I use history of whoo bichup concentrate.
But, for example the Cnp propolis one that you showed, the propolis ampoule is more expensive quantity wise compared to the essence. I used both and the texture is different. The ampoule (or serum? I don't remember the exact name haha) seems to have a higher concentration of whatever ingredients are in there. So for me the essence in this particular case, feels like a toner/skin so I use it accordingly. I have also noticed that for hanbang brands the essence is different from say the Cnp essence. So for hanbang brands the essence feels more like a serum/ampoule. Different brands use those terms differently. Very funny the coffee part😅
The ampoule is more viscous, but it doesn't necessarily mean it contains a higher concentration of active ingredients. Take the Iope C23 ampoule for example, it contains a pretty high concentration of Ascorbic Acid but the texture of the product is extremely watery, even more watery than Missha's vitamin C serum which only contains 10% Ascorbic Acid and has a viscous formula. Also retail prices are not necessarily telling of the amount of active ingredients you're getting. Ampoules are usually priced at a higher price point because the general public perceives them as highly-effective targeted treatments. Brands take into consideration different factors when picking the retail price of a certain product, besides the actual cost of the formula, they also take into account public perception, competitor benchmarking (I.e. a direct competitor is selling a similar product, how much are they charging? Do I as a brand want to be perceived as more premium or more convenient than my competitor?) Etc.
@@OdileMonodTheMonodist I see, that's very interesting. I feel a bit fooled now haha, I always assumed a higher price means a product is more effective. Thank you for explaining, you know so many things, I mean thank you for sharing information you aquired through your job in Korea. I am sure you see everything with other eyes, not the ordinary consumer eyes, like the rest of us do. And thank you for taking time to reply, I have been reading the replies you wrote to the comments here, you are sharing so much of your knowledge!♡
I used serums all the time, but recently I noticed that almost all the serums I used were too heavy for my oily skin. I found out about essence-toners and I tried the one from Pyunkang Yul, which I love so far, but was afraid that it won't be as beneficial as a serum. I've read that products from this brand are high quality and use good ingredients, but I'm still kinda afraid to just use this instead of a serum, considering I just turned 30. Any advice?
Thanks Odile, I totally agree! On a side note, is your first name in fact pronounced with three syllables in Italian (O-di-le)? Just wondering if you say it as O-dile out of convenience for English speakers :)
It is a French name and she uses the French pronunciation. I'm not sure whether she is adjusting the pronunciation for us or not, but I suspect if she was, it would be anglicized to sound something like "Odyle"
Hahaha no it's really pronounced the way I pronounce it. When I worked in the UK, people used to pronounce it "o-dyl" and now in Korea people say "audrey" so I wanted to set the record straight in my intro 😂
Odile, what is your thought about LGHH buying Avon? Thats's a bold move considering some people's view on MLM. But I can't help it and purchased some products to try and i am liking the Farm Rx Super Greens Cooling Gel 😂
😂😂 Their business strategy has always been centered on mergers and acquisitions (they bought the face shop, cnp, physiogel etc) so it was not surprising. Many Korean companies struggle to win over the American market because of the steep entry barrier, I'm not necessarily a fan of Avon but what LG did is quite clever: take an American company with a consolidated market share and improve the aspects where they're lacking (they now formulate all their products, including the Avon ones, in Korea) and use Avon's position in America to introduce their own brands in the American market. They are doing the same thing in China and Japan, they bought Avon China and Japan as well. As for the MLM part, I don't think they see it as an issue, there are many successful MLMs in Korea and people don't really talk about them in negative terms, on the contrary. Just to give you some examples: Atomy, Incellderm and Coway. BTS also modelled for Coway recently and no one in Korea said anything negative about it. If you want my two cents about it, I noticed that the people working for this type of companies in Korea are almost solely women. In Korea it's very difficult for women to remain in the workforce after childbirth (either because they're pressured to quit by their spouse or his family, or because their original companies refuse to take them back or in case they do take them back, they give them meaningless tasks to psychologically pressure them to quit), so many mothers resort to working for MLMs because it gives them more flexibility compared to regular full time employment in a company and they can get to financially contribute to the family. I think this phenomenon plays a big part in how "normalised" MLMs are in Korea.
They are creams with a higher water content. They can be used in place of moisturers if you prefer lighter formulas or they can also be used before a cream to create multiple layers of hydration (this is especially beneficial for very dry skin types). I personally do the former in the morning and the latter in the evening 😌
@Odile Monod - The Monodist oh my goodness, thank you so much! I just purchased a set with an emulsion in it and was too shy to ask the associate to explain lol
interesting! That was one thing I have a hard time explaining to people but the answer is way more complexed than I thought lol maybe go over product layering in a future video? I died at the coffee comparison lol (btw Americans don't feel too awkward about it, you order coffee in Mexico you'll get the same thing).

So are you italian, Odile? I really couldn't tell based on your name and your accent, but i'm happy (?) to hear that (i don't know why, it makes me feel home, i guess). I also was puzzled by your accent; it’s been fun listening to your videos and trying to guess your country of origin. Thank you for sharing this information about yourself. Would love to learn more about your background. And, thank you for your very insightful and informative videos.
I like beauty of joseon ginseng essence water, sometimes i use it as a toner and sometimes as an essence, but when i feel my face not clean enough im using it like toner using a pad yeah
Odile, I found that it's better to use unscented skincare products in daytime. It makes my skin more stable. What do you think of scented and unacented face products?
Tbh I really hate that marketing ploy of "10-step routine" coz it affecting many people across the globe just for the sake of sales for their website many years ago.. I'm not gonna disclose the name of that person.(research it if you like). It's just so none sense that people unknowingly just following trends etc etc without thinking if it's actually beneficial for them... Especially for kbeauty influencers too it feels they're doing it for themselves without considering their audience...as I enjoy watching them, I don't actually do what they do. I'm glad I didn't fall for this because I'm really into k Beauty even before it was became a trend. As for serum/essence/ampoule tbh you guys can use them like what I'm doing, use an Essence in first night that target pigmentation. The second night a serum for redness and texture i prefer to find what your skin concerns. If you have budget of it but for my experience they Essence/serum is the same. Skincare is not a fast fashion guys you don't need much.. It's for our simplistic beautiful selves.
Amen to that! I really hate how that myth affected the perception people have of Korean beauty in the West. There are so many things that this industry has to offer, but all people talk about is this absurd myth, gimmicky ingredients and made-up rules based on cheap exoticism.

There's no particular order to layer cosmetics, it depends on the formulas of the single products. In general go from more watery to more oily and you should be OK! I've read that products from this brand are high quality and use good ingredients, but I'm still kinda afraid to just use this instead of a serum, considering I just turned 30. Any advice?
Thanks for another great video!

@@OdileMonodTheMonodist haha no way! Thanks for the reply, really love your content 😊
Thanks, a lot, for sharing your knowledge. As usual, a great video. Regards fron Spain.
Pleasure is all mine, glad it hear it was interesting 🙏
Could you explain the use of emulsions? I know it has something to do with hydrating but I never completely got the gist of it.
Hi Odile. What happened to your Hera sunscreen video? I was gonna watch it but then it disappeared.
Apologies, I decided to re-upload it to correct a small segment. It's back online now!
I would like to start Hanbang skincare but doesn't know where to begin, I just entered 30's and my skin condition is Dull, dry, Abit sensitive and acne(?) Tiny bump mostly on forehead and chin(prob bcs of 😷? ... Please help 🥺🙏
Your video is really informative ❤
I am very interested in the history of Whoo products, but I don’t know where to start or which products are best for me where can I find some help
I have a video and an article (linked in the description box of that video) where I explain the differences and main features of each line.
Love your videos! So informative and nice to listen.
Thank you ❤️🙏
So are you italian, Odile? I really couldn't tell based on your name and your accent, but i'm happy (?) to hear that (i don't know why, it makes me feel home, i guess). Great content, really; for the moment i'm speechless because i wasn't expecting to find something like this and i'm going down the rabbithole of your channel
Hi! Yes, I’m Italian, born and raised. I’m really glad my content resonates with you. Enjoy exploring the channel!
I also was puzzled by your accent; it’s been fun listening to your videos and trying to guess your country of origin. Thank you for sharing this information about yourself. I have also been curious as to how you ended up in the field of marketing for k beauty (other than by being a highly intelligent, competent and insightful person).
What do you think of scented and unacented face products?
thank you for this extremely based content

@@OdileMonodTheMonodist and we all glad we find your channel 🥰🥰🥰

“…whatever this thing is supposed to be”, for americano filter coffee 😂 Love it! Macchiato forever!
