  • The knock sensor technology will be installed through a free software update performed by Hyundai dealers and is rolling out through a product improvement campaign to approximately 2 million Hyundai vehicles, including all model year 2011-2018 Sonata and 2013-2018 Santa Fe Sport vehicles with engines produced in the U.S. The knock sensor detection system software continuously monitors engine vibrations for unusual dynamic patterns that develop as an engine connecting rod bearing wears abnormally in a way that could later cause engine seizure. If vibrations caused by bearing wear start to occur, the malfunction indicator lamp will blink continuously, an audible chime will sound (in certain models) and the vehicle will be placed in a temporary engine protection mode with reduced power and acceleration. In this temporary mode, drivers maintain full control of the vehicle as brakes, steering and safety devices such as airbags remain operational.

I had this done to my 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport 2.0 turbo with 48,000 miles on January 8th 2019.
January 18th it’s goes into code P1326 and “Limps Home”. Dealer tests harness and it passes, Hyundai tells them to replace engine. I get it back on January 24th drive it for 10 days and 600 miles. On February 5th goes into P1326 code again and “limps home”. Dealer tests the harness this time and it fails, so Hyundai sends another harness. I pick the vehicle up on February 8th and while driving home it throws another check engine light, this time the vehicle is still driveable. The code is P0326 now it’s at the dealer getting the actual knock sensor replaced. I wonder if this recall software was rushed out?

I had the software upgrade several weeks ago before a trip to Ohio. I was anticipating problems as with any software upgrade.
I was leaving Ohio in my 2017 Sonata with 35,000 miles and it suddenly lost power. I thought I would take it to a dealer in Erie PA but ended up calling my dealer in Kingston, NY. He somewhat guardedly gave me the idea I could "limp" home, which I preceded to do, driving the car 400 miles in limp mode. Now they have the car and are talking only about replacing the engine. They gave me a low mileage 2018 Santa Fe to drive as my own, which is fine with me. That being said, I am worried there are going to be cascading problems with this software upgrade, and what you have written here confirms it. As long as they keep up the level of customer service, it's fine by me. Right now I am satisfied and believe that Hyundai is trying to improve things and, anyway, the miles i put on the Santa Fe will not go on my own car....

@@patjohnson9736 it was under warranty at the time. I no longer own the vehicle, I replaced it with a 2021 Honda Ridgeline Sport.

I got a 2016 Hyundai Santa fe 2.0 turbo, Since they updated the recall software update, now I don't feel the kick of the turbo. I got power tho, drive fine, now the SUV feel like driving a big engine. Brought it back to the dealer, they changed the wastegate, still the same, no kick.

I would advise against getting the software update.

I just bought a used 2019 Santa Fe SE. They say I need the knock sensor recall done. How long does it take?

@@Gonsleenger if you still have the car get it done asap. There is a class action law suit that gives you a lifetime warranty on the engine as long as you do the recall. If you don't you are out the cost of repairs.
