I think Raylan knew Boyd wanted to go to the prison... You see it click in Raylan's head.. it's why he sat everything down on the table and elevated to fighting words... opposite of what his words were saying "I'm a US Marshall.... blah, blah...", he gave Boyd what he owed him... a chance to get next to Dickie.

Nowadays when I watch a dialogue between the two i'm always holding my breath, taken by the dialogue ofcourse, but holding my breath nonetheless wondering if it will all end in a fight. They walk a fragile line though they try to cover it up with humour. It's like Boyd likes to see how far he can push legal boundaries while Raylan feels Boyd should know better and stop forcing his hand because it won't end well for either one of them. Truth be told, Boyd is just the ultimate troublemaker, but Raylan is no saint either. Which is why I love the show.

He could draw faster, outsmart then, outbattle them ALL the time.Ok got a punch from time to time but that was only to showcase how later on he would roll all of them up. There wasnt a single story development in Justified Raylan didnt walk out a winner. Boyd was a very good punchline for him but he was only a punchline to play up Raylan. They did not make him a believable character at all. As "smart" as Boyd was he always lost to Raylan which made it more comical and not at all in sync with Leonard books.
